previous C section risks in future pregnancy

Hi. Does anyone know if the risk of a c section scar rupturing is only during labour or can rupture happen as your uterus expands during pregnancy?

We lost our first baby boy recently due to complications during labour which resulted in me having a T incision ceserean.

I've been told by two different consultants that we would be ok to start ttc again after 6 months. I know the longer we can leave it the better but I'm 35 this year and have had a pervious miscarriage, so 6 months sounds abit more bearable to me than 12 or 18 months.

Because of the complications I suffered we've been told that the doctors wouldn't want me to labour again, so I would need an elective c section in any future pregnancies.
So I'm just wondering if we were lucky enough to fall pregnant again + I wasn't allowed to labour would this mean there wouldn't be a risk of my scar rupturing?
Thankyou

Condolences on your loss.

Most do recommend a 12 month wait but if you've been told 6 months then go with that. There have been a few on here that have had a 2nd baby within a year of cesarean so it is possible to carry soon after.
Your wound should be fairly well healed in 6 months. I imagine they will keep a very close eye on you in your next pregnancy so any signs of trouble and they will intervene.
Good luck

I’ve had 3 c sections and will be having my fourth with this pregnancy.

After my first section I fell pregnant within 9 months and all was fine with that pregnancy.

I was consultant led in all Subsequent pregnancies purely due to the c sections but none were classed as high risk.

Congratulations x

Sorry, I read that as though you had fallen pregnant already. Apologies!

I had a section with my first 5 years ago and a vaginal delivery in October with my 2nd. I can't comment on the risks regarding time in between pregnancies or your specific situation regarding your scar, but as far as I'm aware it's during labour that is the risk point (although don't take that as gospel) If you're on Facebook there's a fantastic group called VBAC support group that I would definitely recommend. There are women with so many different combinations of pregnancies/sections/deliveries, and there are also midwives and doulas who are fab when you need advice. I see a lot of women who are not yet pregnant but are considering another pregnancy after a previous section and are looking for advice. Maybe pop on and have a look and see if you get any advice more specific to your situation there.

Thankyou all for replying, I'm just trying to get as much information as I can before ttc. I want to give my body the best chance possible but also awear it could take a long time to concieve. So even if we started trying at 6 months there's no guarantee we'd fall pregnant again straight away.
I'm hoping I'm lucky enough to fall pregnant at all. We don't want to replace our son but we've spent the last 9 months planning for our family + feel like that's all been taken away now.
I'll definatly have a look on the VBAC group. Thanks again.

Hi. I'm very sorry about your son. I think (but I'm definitely not an expert) that the risk of uterine rupture is just when you are in labour. We had a DD who died when she was 2 months old and there was some advice about waiting 6 months before TTC to recover better emotionally. I really couldn't wait that long, every day felt like a potential missed chance to have another child when you've lost all trust that things can go well. We TTC after 3 months and got pregnant a month later. It meant that DSs birthday is almost exactly on the anniversary of our DD's death which I find difficult now. And I felt like much of my grief turned into pretty overwhelming anxiety. With hindsight, I think it might have been better waiting a few more months but I know that at the time I really couldn't wait.
Good luck Flowers

@LBTM I'm so sorry to hear about your DD + that you've had to go through this too.
I can completely see what your saying about the grief turning in to anxiety. I feel like that sometimes now + I'm not even pregnant. I'm quite sure another pregnancy won't be easy.
Did you have ceserean deliveries with both your babies, or were they natural births?
Thankyou for sharing your story.

@flb53 Hello and I'm very sorry for your loss.

An elective C- section would be safest for any future babies. As some have mentioned VBAC, I've attached a clip of the Australian O&G college guidelines on some of the VBAC concerns, and waiting >18 months is safer. Uterine rupture will usually happen in labour itself or external trauma (car crash etc), so you don't need to worry too much as you'll be Caesar.

Placenta accreta however is a concern if you get pregnant rapidly after delivery. I would suggest you look at the problems with that whilst doing your research. The risk becomes exponential with increasing caesars and most specialists would recommend not going beyond 4.

I had a vaginal birth with my DD then a C-section with DS1 as he was breech. I got pregnant with DS2 a year later and had an induction (he was very late) and vbac with him.

I’m sorry for your loss. I had a j shaped incision when I had my first DC by c section and I was told I would need a c section for subsequent pregnancies because of the risk of the scar rupturing during Labour. When I saw the consultant during my second pregnancy I asked the same questions about the risk of rupture during the pregnancy in general but he said it was just during Labour they were worried about so if I had contractions go to hospital immediately.
Also just to add my elective c section was a very positive experience; I know people sometimes struggle with the idea of it but after a traumatic first birth it was also the right thing for me psychologically as well as medically

Monsterjam · 23/02/2021 07:18

I was advised to have a second c section after my first as there was a relatively small gap between them (14 months) and both babies were big, pregnancies fine just some concerns about labour.
I am sorry for your loss, good luck with your journey xx

After two miscarriages, our daughter was born but passed away at ten days old a few weeks ago and I am in the exact same boat as you.

We feel cheated. Nine months of planning and now we're all alone.

We want to TTC ASAP but my c section was only five weeks ago

MooreLew · 12/03/2021 21:07

I was told that t incision or 'classical' sections carry a higher risk of uterine rupture, which is why the strongly advise against a vbac if you have this kind of scar. My sister had this kind of emergency section and was told she would have to have another section. However I've heard absolutely nothing about scars rupturing during pregnancy. If your consultant said 6 months to wait then I'd feel confident that you would be safe to get pregnant then. Good luck xx

Noahsmama1985 · 08/07/2021 23:10

Hello
So sad to hear about your loss
I had a classical t incision and was told I could conceive one year later, which I did. I went on to have a successful elective c section
I was told I was at risk of uterine rupture but was an ok pregnancy...my previous scar did hurt a little towards the end.
I'm pregnant with another baby now 4 years on from my t incision and another normal c section and it seems to be going ok.
I've been told if I have any pain to go straight in
I hope it works out for you Smile

Hi @flb53

I know this is an old post but I was wondering how did you get on on your ttc journey ? I lost my beautiful baby girl 3 weeks ago at 25 weeks, I had to have a c section as I had a low lying placenta. I haven’t had my follow up appointment yet but waiting a year to try again seems so long. I was wondering did you go ahead and try at 6 months ?

Brokenpearl · 05/07/2023 08:52

Hi, may I ask how old you are. Maybe you were young that’s why you have been fine for 3 sections.

Noahsmama1985 · 05/07/2023 12:21

I was 32 when I had the classical t incision. 33.5 when I had 2nd c section (normal cut) and 36 with my latest 3rd section. Hope this helps
