Pregnant at 40 - consultant care?

Hi all, wondering what people’s experiences are of care plan for mums 40 and over? I’ve read it depends on area - I’m North Somerset/Bristol.

This is my 6th pregnancy - I have 3 kids and 2 MC one at 20 weeks. Due to the late miscarriage in my 4th preg I had consultant led care with my 3rd child and also was on daily deltaparin injections due to a blood condition they think may have caused the MC. (I don’t have the injections when not preg)

Any thoughts on if I’d receive consultant care again due to age and history? I’m only 4.5weeks currently so haven’t spoken to any health care yet...

Thanks xx

Hi OP, bring 40 on its own wouldn't be a trigger for consultant led care (at least not in my area), but in conjunction with your previous history it might well be, particularly if that's an issue that is likely to recur. Ask your MW when you next see her. Good luck!

Being 40 would be enough in my area

Anything in your history or current health that would be classed as high risk will mean you see the consultant at around 16 weeks.
They will asses you and decide if you need to remain under consultant care or safe to be put back under midwife led care.

Due to the late MC findings, when I got preg again there was already a note on my file to trigger apt with blood specialist as they knew i was likely to need the deltaparin. I started it from 10 weeks pg. I guess all I can do is explain to Dr when I call to register pregnancy? I don’t even know the rules now with covid... I guess they won’t even see me and it will be a phone call??

Yes I am consultant led purely based on the fact I'm 40 (Scotland)

Being 40 was the sole reason for me as they told me so.
Being consultant led just flags you for some additional tests like gestational diabetes, and I had a couple of sessions in my 2nd & 3rd trimester with a consultant before she discharged me to midwife care. I'm in Berkshire.
