Hi,
I am completely new to this and would appreciate any advice or support.
I found out I was pregnant a week ago and decided to get an early scan. I had a transvaginal ultrasound and there was a clear yoke sac, gestational sac and feotal pole measuring 5.7mm at 6 weeks and 1 day. However, the midwives tole me that there was no heartbeat. Whilst I expected this as I knew I was so early scanning, I was not prepared for how pessimistic they were. They told me that almost always they can detect a heartbeat by now and that I should go and get some pads and prepare myself for a miscarriage as it was likely to have stopped developing. I asked them to clarify whether the chances that it was not okay were greater than the chance that there may be a heartbeat presenting in a week, and they said that it was looking as though it was bad news.
I am in shock and so confused because everything online suggests that the heartbeat develops during the 6th week and that its okay not to necessarily see one by now. Surely I don't need to worry until the 7th week? I am beside myself with stress and don't know whether the nurses were being realistic or overly pessimistic. Any advice?
I have had no bleeding or pains.

I wouldn’t worry too much at this stage.

It’s probably more to do with the size of the fetal pole. With one of my miscarriages I was told when the fetal pole measures 6mm with no heartbeat a miscarriage can usually be confirmed.

Yours however wasn’t quite measuring that yet, and many women don’t see a heartbeat until they’re into the 7th week.

I’m very surprised at their certainty that something would be wrong so I’m sorry you had to experience that negativity.

Have they asked you to go back to be rescanned?

Hi @StephanieGraceBarlow199277 I'm so sorry you're going through this, have they suggested you go back in a weeks time for another scan?
I can only share my personal experience, I've had 3 losses so far and with my first I had a scan at the exact time as you at 6+1 weeks. I did see the heartbeat however I still miscarried a week later unfortunately.
I know it's awful but unfortunately only time will tell. If you have had no bleeding in the next week I would demand another scan. I really hope it all goes well for you xxx

I'm so sorry @StephanieGraceBarlow199277 you must be feeling disappointed.

Were they Midwives? If so, I think I'd have to go with their experience and knowledge unless your PG symptoms are still there?

@Moominmiss

Thank you ever so much for your message. I am so so sorry to hear that you have gone through miscarriages.

Thats why I am so concerned, I don't understand where their negativity came from and I wish now that I had asked more questions but I was in so much shock. They passed me tissues and said they were sorry...

I have a rescan a week today and I am so incredibly nervous. I can't stop crying and I don't know whether the baby inside me is okay or not.

Thank you so much for reassuring me... I just wish I could fast forward time and know for sure.

@lockdownbabyx thank you so much for your message.
I am so incredibly sorry to hear about your losses. It must have been horrendous having seen a heartbeat. My heart goes out to you. Luckily yes they have asked me to go back in a week but this is going to feel like the longest week of my life...

@StephanieGraceBarlow199277 I’m glad they are at least offering to rescan you in a week.

Hopefully they will be wrong and you’ll see a heartbeat.

In my experiences (4 losses sadly), a miscarriage was never confirmed until I’d had 2 or 3 scans with a week to 10 days between each one which is why I’m surprised they were willing to tell you with some certainty that you were going to miscarry.

I truly hope that’s not the case for you.

The waiting is the worst, it’s an awful limbo that honestly nothing can help with.

X

@StephanieGraceBarlow199277 if it makes you feel any better I went for an early scan at 6+1 weeks and they could only see the gestational sac, no yolk or embryo yet alone a heartbeat. I had to wait 2 weeks and went back and all was well.

I know your pain as I was told there was a 50/50 chance of miscarriage which obviously made me so distraught.

In actual fact 6 weeks is bloody early and there is no reason to suggest that what they've seen so far is not going to progress into a healthy pregnancy. I personally would be reassured by the fact that you saw all that. I thought the heartbeat developed slightly later but everyone is different.

I'm not a midwife, doctor or sonographer so I obviously don't know for definite but I'd try not to worry too much at this stage (easier said than done I know!). If you were at 8 weeks and there was no heartbeat then I'd be worried.

Keep us posted and will keep everything crossed for you x

@StephanieGraceBarlow199277 so sorry you are going through a stressful time. I had a scan at 6 weeks due to a big bleed. Found out was pregnant with twins, one baby had a heartbeat the other didn’t but the clinic didn’t seem concerned and felt it was too early. I was rescanned a week later after another big bleed and both babies had a heartbeat. I am now 25 weeks pregnant and the second twin is always a wee bit behind the first size wise. While only time will tell at this early stage what the outcome will be for you, I hope you get good news in a weeks time. X
