Has anyone experience sensitive teeth during pregnancy? I’m 22 weeks and have had this for the last few days. It’s awful Sad been using sensodyne and the mouthwash , hoping it shifts soon .

Can anyone advise how long they had it? I had it few weeks back and it passed after a few days but it’s much worse this time x

Hopefully it's just down to gum changes exposing more of the teeth, if so it should settle down after birth. Sensitive toothpaste will help a lot but it can take time to build up a barrier.

I like colgate sensitive pro relief, I use it all the time not just in pregnancy.

Are you taking vitamins? I took extra calcium and that helped my teeth

Reeva1988 · 19/02/2021 19:20

Hoping it goes before birth, don’t think I can put up with this for another 18 weeks Sad thanks though I’ll try that if sensodyne doesn’t start to work soon x

It can help to actually rub some sensodyne straight on to the sensitive areas (as well as brushing).

Reeva1988 · 19/02/2021 19:25

Yeah I’ve been rubbing it on aswell as brushing - not working yet . I may look into calcium supplements xx

Dental nurse here. Sensitivity won’t be directly caused by pregnancy but more likely a secondary side effect. If you’ve had sore gums, which is common in pregnancy then that could have resulted in some gum recession which would make your teeth more sensitive. Another reason would be exposure to acid. So if you’ve had sickness, that can make them more sensitive. Also diet changes such as having more acidic drinks I.e fruit juice/fizzy drinks. Honestly don’t waste your money on calcium supplements, they’re basically a placebo and will make zilch difference.
Sensodyne is your best bet to help with the sensitivity. Particularly rubbing it directly on after brushing, more so before bed so it’s working all night. Avoid mouthwash after brushing as that’ll wash the majority of the fluoride off that you’ve just applied with your toothpaste. Spit, don’t rinse after brushing. Also avoid brushing too hard. Hope it resolves soon x

@Nat4392 thanks so much for the advice. I did have bleeding gums for the first 16 weeks so guessing that has caused him recession and sensitivity .

I’ll carry on with the sensodyne and I’ll stop using mouth wash as I have been using that afterwards .

Do you think it will ease? It’s unbearable today x

Oh well there we go then! Grin

Nat4392 · 19/02/2021 20:04

@Reeva1988 these things can come and go so it’s hard to say how long it’ll last for. If it gets really bad though, make an appointment with your dentist, we have a very high fluoride varnish that can be painted on the necks of the teeth which can help loads with sensitivity. Avoiding acid and applying the sensodyne are your best home remedies in the meantime x

@Nat4392 great thank you. I’ll continue with the sensodyne and hope that it eases . If not I’ll book in . Thanks again x
