Hi all just wondering about the whooping cough vaccine- what are the pros and cons ?

Yes I did. The pro is that your baby won't get whooping cough.

Dollywilde · 19/02/2021 09:38

The pros are that your baby is protected from what can be a fatal illness for them. Please get the vaccine.

indigo27 · 19/02/2021 09:38

I thought that would be the case- I just wasn't offered it with my last pregnancy so just wanted some more info 😊

The vaccine can stop your baby from dying of whooping cough. Not sure any other pros are needed are they?

indigo27 · 19/02/2021 09:40

I don't need sarcastic responses I'm not an idiot and of course if that's the case I'll have it.
It was only briefly mentioned at my appointment and I just wanted a bit more info that's all as she told me to research it and decide if I wanted it or not- hence why I'm asking....

I wasn’t being sarcastic

CherieBabySpliffUp · 19/02/2021 09:42

Is this something that has happened in the last decade? I wasn't offered it when I was pregnant in the late 2000's.

indigo27 · 19/02/2021 09:42

Just seen online it says from 16 weeks so maybe that's why the midwife was a bit vague about it.. as I'm only 12 weeks.

The midwife presumably said ‘research and make up your mind’ because of the number of knee jerk anti vaxxers. Getting people who would instantly go ‘oh gosh no vaccines’ to go off and read a bit about how whooping cough affects babies will hopefully improve uptake. Even if it doesnt kill, whooping cough is a horrible horrible illness, especially for a tiny newborn. I think you can look up videos online of whooping cough coughing in babies, it’s heartbreaking.

And apologies for being curt but this question gets asked regularly on here and I just cannot comprehend why women would refuse a vaccine that could save their baby’s life. We are beyond lucky to live in a country which can offer this to us on the NHS, turning it down feels almost wicked.

indigo27 · 19/02/2021 09:49

She didn't explain it in detail she just mentioned it very briefly and told me to research and make up my mind- wish she'd been a bit more informative!
I will go and get it done at 16 weeks 😊

I didn’t get it but then I have sister who was left brain damaged due to the whooping cough vaccine. I didn’t get it in child hood and I won’t be giving it to my child when she’s born. I’m not anti-vaccine as I’ll be giving her others but I just can’t take the chance we have something off genetically.
I’m pro-choice so don’t wouldn’t ever tell anyone not to get something.

Pandapotato · 19/02/2021 09:55

I nearly died of whooping cough aged 5. I still vividly remember gasping for air.
Please protect your baby.

Isadora2007 · 19/02/2021 09:58

It’s best to have it done after the 20 week scan.
It has been reintroduced fairly recently after outbreaks of whooping cough in 2012 and particularly bad ones in 2015 which is maybe why many mins here didn’t have it offered prior to this.
My dd just had a baby and didn’t have the whooping cough vaccine this time as she had a bad reaction last time and figured that we were in lockdown pretty much her whole pregnancy so I don’t think that was a bad choice for her personally. But if you’re only 12 weeks now then we really should be back to some kind of mixing by the time your baby is born (please god!) so yes I’d go for it around 24 weeks or at that nearest appt. no advantage to getting it earlier as it’s to protect baby not you

TrufflyPig · 19/02/2021 10:04

There was an outbreak in 2012 and several infants died. Since then pregnant women have been offered the vaccine. It's well worth having.

UnCoffreDor · 19/02/2021 10:16

I haven't for both pregnancies, never heard of it first time round, and decided against it this pregnancy. Research and make the decision for yourself.

ivfbeenbusy · 19/02/2021 10:30

It's been offered routinely in pregnancy since about 2012 I think

I'd google videos of babies with whooping cough - it's incredibly safe as a vaccine during pregnancy to protect your baby from an awful disease

TrufflyPig · 19/02/2021 10:33

www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/whooping-cough-vaccination/

Here's the basic info OP. I had the vaccine for both my pregnancies.

MindyStClaire · 19/02/2021 10:34

Had it both pregnancies without a second thought - the idea of a newborn with whooping cough is awful.

Chelyanne · 19/02/2021 10:50

Whooping cough is pretty nasty so yes I've had it in all of my pregnancies where it was offered and will do with current one.
I don't remember any side effects from having this vaccine.

One of the complications of whooping cough is dehydration, our eldest was admitted to hospital at 15mth with severe dehydration (happens super fast with kids) due to V&D from a non specific viral infection (basically they didn't know which one caused it). Absolutely awful holding your child while they are like a pin cushion trying to get a drip in to dehydrated veins.

DuggeeHugPlease · 19/02/2021 10:53

Yes had it in both pregnancies - both time it was given to me at the hospital immediately after 20 week scan.
No complications or side effects (other than a slightly sore arm)

JemimaTiggywinkle · 19/02/2021 10:57

Yes, I had mine. They did it at my 20 week scan appointment.

Pro: you and baby are protected from a serious illness
Con: slightly swollen arm for a couple of days

MrsR87 · 19/02/2021 11:00

I had it at my 20 weeks scan appointment (if I remember correctly)! Would never have crossed my mind not to as my mum had whooping cough about ten years ago and I have never been so scared as I was watching her have a coughing fit (she has asthma too). I had a couple of days of a sore arm but I pretty much get that with any vaccine I have.

indigo27 · 19/02/2021 11:37

Thank you girls really appreciate the kind and non judgemental comments - I will ask if I can have it at my 20 week appointment. Thanks so much x
