Blood Thinner Injections Pregnancy

Hi everyone, I was advised yesterday to start taking blood thinning injections due to Factor V Leiden/Thromophillia and have been worried since then. I’m worried about taking the jags (I know it’s for the best for baby so will do it no matter what). Was looking for some nice stories about any mums having taken these and how it went and how was baby?

I’ve had a previous miscarriage from my blood clotting disorder and just want with all my heart this pregnancy to be okay so some positive stories would be amazing!

After 4 miscarriages I was prescribed Clexane injections from conception to week 12. I did this with my first child and then the same with my current pregnancy (I'm now 30 weeks). If you have a blood clotting disorder then blood thinners are the best course of action to prevent miscarriage. Lots of luck, I hope it works out for you.

Hi, I have been on blood thinning injections since I was around 7 weeks, I am not coming up to 14 weeks and all is ok so far. They are a bit of a pain and can bruise but you do get used to it and hopefully all will be worth it!

Yes, I have Factor V Leiden and have had to do this in every pregnancy, injecting twice daily. The first time is the worst, but do it quickly and it's not a huge deal, you get used to it.

Bear in mind that if you have anti coagulants in your system you won't be able to have an epidural or spinal block, so that needs to be timed well for labour. For me, I mentally prepared myself for no epidural, which my brain interpreted as 'no pain relief' so I inexplicably declined everything (even gas and air) throughout a 27 hour labour Grin

Good luck with it, and congratulations. You'll be absolutely fine Smile

That’s such a relief to hear. I’ve been taking low dose aspirin tablets as well throughout my pregnancy for the first 4-16 weeks and now going to get injections so it’s feeling daunting, in my mind I know I have to so I will but it’s the thought.

I read that in a book the midwife had given me about not being allowed an epidural, I wondered if they would do a planned cesarian because of this but not had a chance to ask the question to the consultant yet. That’s a long time without pain relief! Shock

Thank you so much for your reply!

Thanks everyone for your replies that’s given me a huge feeling of relief! I’m sure it’ll be okay once I start but so happy hearing people’s positive outcomes from doing this too!

Hi, I had a PE when I was pregnant (later diagnosed factor v Leiden homozygous) and so had to have the jabs all the way through and for a couple of months after.

The anxiety for me was worse than the reality. Always panicking id booked too much and then when I stopped them I panicked I'd clot Confused

It was decided I'd be induced at 39 weeks so I could come off the blood thinners that day in order to reduce the chance of me bleeding too much during birth, I then resumed the injections the day after my baby was born.

Everything went perfectly, couldn't have gone better. I'm not on any blood thinners now but try to remember to stay hydrated as that's really helpful in keeping your blood from clotting.
