Hair colouring

This may be a silly question but I'm 8 weeks pregnant and was just wondering about hair colouring when pregnant.
I usually have half head highlights at my hairdressers. Obviously due to lockdown I haven't been but I'm thinking once they open again they will be in touch as I was due an appointment early Feb. Is hair colouring safe when pregnant? Or will I need to delay colouring for now?

Yes its OK. Your hair can be more unpredictable and your scalp may be more sensitive but its not unsafe

It's fine Smile

I have dyed mine both pregnancies both times have neen fine. I would do a patch test to make sure you dont have an adverse reaction to the dye now your pregnant. I took a reaction to moisturiser that is usually fine it was non fragranced an everything.

Just be careful as your hair may react differently to normal. It's safe for baby though (I was sat in the hairdressers at 40 weeks 😊) I checked with midwife and hair dressers and all was OK

Just thought it might be useful to link to the NHS guidance:
www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/is-it-safe-to-use-hair-dye-when-i-am-pregnant-or-breastfeeding/

There's basically no research done on this so nothing to tell you conclusively one way or another except that lots of women do it and there doesn't seem to be any adverse outcome and there's no obvious mechanism for harm. They do suggest that many women wait until after 1st trimester which you might want to consider, although no science behind that.

The only other thing you might want to consider is RCOG research which I read to say that no one thing is likely to cause harm but an accumulation might. There's lots of things you can't avoid on their list so they basically say to minimise exposure e.g. by using fewer cleaning products, personal care products, less food in plastic packaging etc. You can't eliminate everything but you can reduce. Honestly - it depends how far you want to go with this! Moving to a remote island, eating only organic foods and not using deodorant for 9 months isn't really an option for most of us!

www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/guidelines/sip37/

I've been pretty relaxed about all of this personally - I choose the less processed option when available and avoided strong chemicals unless could really ventilate the room well (paint, bleach etc - the packets do say to do this anyway but I made sure I actually did while PG) but haven't made any major changes. I waited until 2nd trimester to dye my hair just because that's what the NHS guidance seemed to be steering towards.
