Do I have hyperemesis?

Hi everyone, I have been following these threads and this forum for ages and it is always so helpful and reassuring to hear what everyone else is going through so I thought I would ask for some advice.

I am 13 weeks 4 days at the moment and have had constant nausea since around week 6. When I say constant, I mean from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep. Absolutely no respite yet I haven't actually been sick, I just have the nausea. I manage to eat small meals, some days are more than others, but I'm lucky if I drink one glass of any type of fluid throughout the day. I have tried all the usual remedies, cold foods, sipping drinks, cordial, fizzy, crackers, ginger nuts etc. but none of it seems to actually relieve the nausea.

Is this just normal morning sickness? Or could it possibly be HG?

I am trying to see it through without medication if possible!

Thank you in advance :)

They usually diagnose HG based on actual vomiting - enough to have lost a certain amount of weight (as a percentage).
If you're not actually vomiting you need to try and increase your fluids as this will help ease the nausea. Sips taken little and often are good (I found flat coke worked best). Try foods with high liquid content (ice lollies, jelly, milkshake, fruit purée/ compote). Even if you just take a tiny sip of water and hold it in your mouth to absorb, it'll help.

HG us typically loosing over 10% of your body weight / being sick multiple times a day.

Regardless it’s rubbish though so don’t feel like your can’t contact your doctors for antisickness meds. ESP if you aren’t gaining weight.

Can you stomach ice lollys? These are a great way of getting fluids in

I am the exact same as you but I’m only almost 9 weeks. Both my previous pregnancies I was nauseas until week 16.

My midwife this time noted me down as having hyperemesis when I explained my symptoms. I haven’t had a meal in over 3 weeks and living off crackers and potatos and less than a litre of water a day. I just can’t stomach anything else. Although I haven’t lost weight bizarrely and haven’t been constantly vomiting she still called it hyperemesis

Wishing you well and hope it passes soon for you.

Yes, they don't diagnose hyperemesis without the emesis component.

Doesn't mean it's not really shit though, or that you can't ask for help!

Thank you all for your replies! Fingers crossed it does pass naturally soon. I've only lost around 5% of my body weight so it does seem like normal nausea.

Unfortunately the ice lolly/ice cube/flat coke methods haven't worked for me but I'll keep on trying different things until I find something I can stomach!

Thanks all Smile

It sounds awful but you really do have to push past the nausea and keep eating / drinking, especially if you're not actually vomiting. It's horrid when you feel so sick but it does help a bit. Little and often, no matter how awful it makes you feel - you'll feel a whole lot worse if you have low blood sugar and / or dehydration.
I was vomiting 20+ times a day and still forced myself to eat small bits as I knew I'd be even worse if I didn't. With DC2 I learnt to cook two (very small) dinners for me as inevitably the first one would reappear soon after eating. But I knew if I didn't eat dinner two, I'd spend the evening feeling dreadful.
