Hyperemesis not in second pregnancy?

Hi there, I’m 5 weeks into my second pregnancy. I had awful hyperemesis with my DD which started at 6 weeks. I’m just wondering if anyone has had HG in first but not subsequent pregnancies? I’m hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Feeling very worried that it’s going to hit any time soon.

I'm sure there must be women who have it in their first and are lucky enough to escape it in subsequent pregnancies.

I'm 22 weeks with my second and had HG in my first - unfortunately it was far worse in this pregnancy (hospitalised several times and on ondansetron until 18 weeks when it started to clear up). My tip would be to speak to your GP about taking preventative cyclizine - one of my friends did this and swore it reduced her overall sickness. I didn't do this and it was dreadful!

Good luck - I've got my fingers crossed that you're one of the lucky ones!

I would strongly recommend prophylactic treatment OP. I had HG first time around and I went on promethazine at 4 weeks prophylactically. By the end of week 5 I was vomiting so I got put straight on metoclopramide which has stopped the vomiting other than when I brush my teeth now I'm 7 weeks. Still have severe nausea and many retching episodes a day though, currently off work and imagine I will be for the foreseeable, BUT I am nowhere neeeeear as unwell as last time. Eating and drinking fairly ok compared to last time. Mostly living of white toast and fluids are more of a challenge, but as long as I rest on the sofa I don't feel horrifically ill like last time where I was vomiting up to 15 times a day and once had to have fluids in hospital. I am very sure this is due to being on meds straight away and stopping this in its tracks given that research shows like 80 per cent of women go on to have HG again without prophylactic treatment. Please call your GP and get straight on meds, if you don't need them you can wean off in a month or so if no symptoms develop.

Sorry, my post wasn't clear, I meant I went on promethazine prophylactically with my second pregnancy.

I would echo the above, having had three HG pregnancies. Get some meds in now, just incase. I’m pretty certain the pregnancy sickness society advocate this... the earlier you can start meds, the more effective they can be. Really hope you do avoid it, I’m sure that does happen for some. best wishes for a smooth pregnancy. X

Hi OP, just to offer hope (although I do recommend early meds). I had HG in my last pregnancy - beginning at 4 weeks, sick 5-15+ times a day for the duration. This pregnancy, I was nauseous but sick A LOT less and it eased at 13 ish weeks nearly disappearing (I’ve had whole weeks without puking). 26 weeks now and baba is doing fine.

Hopefully you’ll be ok. For what it’s worth, I still lost weight in this pregnancy in first trimester and if they agreed with me, would have taken meds (sadly in my line of work I can’t take them and work so it’s a risk balance calculation for me). Hope it goes well OP xx

Yes ask GP for meds now. If you were hospitalised last time they should prescribe you cyclizine in advance. Most women with HG have clinical HG again (c 8/10) but it could be better or worse. Hope for the best but def prepare for the worst. I had a worse time second time despite extensive prep and prophylactic meds but psychologically it was easier because less of a shock.

The only pregnancy where I had HG was my second. The only boy.

kalidasa · 16/02/2021 18:29

Yes some women report a clear sex difference and also outcome more likely to be different with a different father (weirdly). I think if you have a toddler already you are also likely to be more tired which is a big factor in exacerbating it.

I had HG with my first and the next three I didn't. Sadly all three resulted in miscarriage. Now I'm pregnant and had really bad hg. Now 17 weeks.

I don't want to worry you if you aren't feeling it, I was told by medical professionals it's different for each pregnancy. But for me it definitely meant that baby was sticking. Also I didn't feel bad until week 6/7. By 8 I was in hospital! So that feeling may come soon x

Thinking of you and hope it all goes well.

Thank you all so much for your helpful advice. I will get in touch with the GP tomorrow!

Good luck to those of you who are pregnant and I hope you continue to feel better. I know how awful it feels. This too shall pass. Xxx
