Maternity pyjamas or size up?!

Hello! I'm nearly 19 weeks and my current pyjamas, although baggy, are getting a bit tight. I'm not sure if I should get maternity pyjamas or just size up. I've seen Asdas range but they don't have a lot in my size at the moment, and there are a few nice PJ's on new look too..but... Do I buy maternity or just size up? What has everyone done and found comfortable??

Thank you! ☺️

I'd go maternity rather than just sizing up - you want the length of the legs and sleeves, breadth of shoulders etc to be right.

I think it depends on your bump and body shape. I know a lot of people can just size up but others it doesn’t actually help and makes it bigger everywhere except where you need it. It could also depend on the style and cut of what you’re wearing.
You’ll likely need or want them if you’re going into hospital and also when you’re home pp as I wore maternity for a while after so could be worth investing in a decent maternity set or two.

Whatever you get think about easy feeding access if you are planning on breastfeeding, then they last a bit longer! I've got a mixture of both. Now 30 weeks and struggling with the sized up tops but elasticated bottoms are still fine.

My maternity pyjamas were the comfiest thing I have ever worn. So good.

really depends on bump shape.
My bump didn't stick out. Instead I had a long flat bump, (bit hard to describe)

I found a lot of maternity stuff was shaped around a clear round bump on the front, so there was too much fabric in one place and not enough above and below.
So for me, going up a size worked better.

But my SIL had a clear round basket ball sized bump, so she didn't want any extra anywhere except the bump

I’ve got both . Probably prefer maternity but sizing up has also been ok. Maternity ones tend to be really expensive . I sized up on the £12. 50 pj sets from M&S and they seem good if that helps x

Depends on the fit. Size up only really worked for me when my bump was smaller. I can still fit into some of the size up stuff I bought, but I am so more more comfy in maternity clothes in my original size.

I got a bigger size. I stayed that size for a few months after having the baby (and nice and loose after c-section). I also couldn't justify buying maternity PJs that would only be worn for a few months

Poppins2016 · 16/02/2021 09:52

Second pregnancy here. First time round I made do with my oldest, baggiest PJs (where the elastic was starting to lose it's elasticity)! This time I've ordered some maternity PJs from Gap (40% off sale) which double up for breastfeeding. Last time I underestimated the amount of time I'd spend post partum in loungewear... It'll be a nice boost to have pretty PJs!

MindyStClaire · 16/02/2021 09:54

I'm still wearing the pyjamas I got on DD1 now that DD2 is seven months because the tops are so handy for breastfeeding.

BikeRunSki · 16/02/2021 09:57

I had JJMMB maternity pjs they a friend gave me. They were amazing. I also had a couple of massive nightshirts with button fronts from Matalan, which were good in hospital as it was so warm. Ordinary PJs, even in a bigger size, were just baggy in the wrong places. If you are planning to breastfeed, get button fronts.

serialplanner · 16/02/2021 15:50

I have a mix. Sized up on simple night t shirts (by 3-4 sizes)

Shirt and shorts I bought maternity.

Not sure when you are due, satin can help with turning in bed once we get big.

Chelyanne · 16/02/2021 17:08

Maternity PJ's are comfier as bump gets bigger. Size up with a good stretch is great for early on and after birth though so worth getting too.

MeadowHay · 16/02/2021 17:19

To be honest I think I only bought one or two pairs of maternity PJs with my first, the rest of them time I just wore my usual ones and stretched them our/wore bottoms low under my bump. But I didn't really have a proper bump until I was about 20+ weeks pregnant and my pre-existing jammies were all baggy elasticated things anyway. Plus I was heavily pregnant in a summer heatwave so didn't need lots of PJ layers. I would buy maternity if I were you to ensure a comfy fit.

Radishesandcake · 16/02/2021 17:30

I wore proper maternity clothes when out or at work and wore DH's joggers and tshirts at home!

MumOfBoys16 · 16/02/2021 19:36

Maternity pjs are sooo comfy! Especially the over bump ones

NH01 · 16/02/2021 19:45

Thanks everyone! This is really helpful! I think I might size up for now and when bump gets a bit bigger, I'll switch to maternity. Because I'm due in July, no doubt I'll need maternity nighties or something nearer the time too! Definitely would like to breastfeed so will look for comfy maternity nursing PJ's.

I have bought both. Find the tops just sizing come up quite short but If i went an even bigger size the bottoms would just fall down. Maternity jammies tho a bit more expensive are defo that bit more comfy just cause they give good length and the waistband doesnt sit at an uncomfortabe bit of my stomach.
