I had a private scan at the weekend and the ultrasound showed an empty sac.

I should be 8w 2d but the sac measures at 6w 2d.

We are devastated and I am terrified of what Is yet to come. I am due to be rescanned in 2 weeks incase the dates are wrong and they said to stay positive. (I know the dates are spot on so its going to be a long 2 weeks).

Has anyone been through this?:(

I had this in May and it wasn't a happy ending, unfortunately. I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum and had an MVA, which was painful (for me - other people seem to find them barely uncomfortable) but tolerable.

The waiting to be rescanned was definitely the hardest part. My periods came back after four or five weeks, but my cycle was irregular for about three or four months afterwards.

I am now pregnant again and crossing my fingers things go better this time!

If you have had a recent bhcg then they should be able to repeat that at 72 hours and if it is dropping then you will know your pregnancy is not continuing. If you would like a faster answer, that is.

OP I’m so sorry. This happened to me at 11w way back and it fucking sucks. Just a heads up that if I were you I’d not go back for a second private scan, I’d get into the NHS system, or at least give your EPU (early pregnancy unit) a call to discuss. You may end up needing surgical management or something else and I don’t know if NHS will do it based on external scans - they might want bug G a s have bad ex war d qgxaahdv confirm for themselves first. However things might be different at the moment with covid (or they might have changed since i was in the same situation), definitely worth checking though. It’s a horrible thing to happen, I hope you find your way through as easily as possible and have better luck next time Flowers

Sorry about random string of letters in the middle there, don’t know what happened! Was just supposed to say they might want to confirm for themselves first Blush

@itssquidstella Congratulations! I hope this pregnancy goes well!

Sorry to hear you have been through the same, it is so awful. I haven't heard of the MVA so i will have a look into this.

@FourForYouGlenCoco
Sorry to hear you've been through the same. It is so awful and I'm struggling to deal with it at the moment.

Thanks for the advice, I spoke to the local midwife team last night and they said I should go to the scan in 2 weeks time. I don't really want to go, you just know when something isn't right don't you? To go through the same ordeal as yesterday is not what I need.

I will give the EPU a call and see what they suggest.

I agree with a previous poster about getting yourself into the NHS/EPU system. I'd had my first two scans at Window to the Womb and then referred myself to the EPU because it was clear that there was a problem.

Initially they were going to make me wait a further two weeks and rescan me, but a sympathetic consultant agreed to take the first private scan as evidence and scheduled the MVA based on that.

Technically the EPU isn't obliged to pay any attention to the result of a private scan, so it's definitely worth getting seen on the NHS if you can. Fingers crossed for a speedy resolution for you Thanks

I'm so sorry this is happening to you - it's just awful. The waiting is the worst bit I think. When I had this they did accept my private scans but that was where one showed a heartbeat and the next didn't and I was able to take the paperwork from both of them. They won't accept just one scan in case the dates are out. Definitely worth getting in the system though - if you need any kind of management it has to come from NHS and I couldn't bear waiting for it to happen naturally. Also when I had mine they weren't offering MVA during COVID so I had to take tablets to start the MC. Worth understanding what options are available to you.

Thank you all!

I have contacted the local EPU and I am waiting for a callback.

The midwife has told me I still need to collect my maternity notes tomorrow which I am dreading. Seems like such a waste when something isn't right and so upsetting for me.
