Accidentally drank alcohol

My virtual baby shower was today. My husband thought he had bought non alcoholic fizz for the shower, so I had a big glass, and it was actually alcoholic. Just feel a bit upset that I drank it - just went straight to my head. What do you guys think?

You'll be fine, OP!

As for how you can accidentally buy alcohol - I did it recently. I'm teetotal and managed to buy a Prosecco I thought was non-alcoholic because it was covered in Os. It looked, at a brief glance, like the M&S Fizzero, and various other 0% brands (I drunk a lot of them!)
Turns out it was just a Prosecco called something like Ooooooo Prosecco. The letter O rather than a zero. I noticed before I drank it, but it was very easy to be mistaken.

I understand your stress but honestly like everyone's said it will be completely fine, it won't affect you or lo in the slightest.

There have even been studies showing moderate alcohol consumption in pregnancy leads to higher IQs.

So don't worry!

OP I developed liver complications in pregnancy and was petrified it was because I’d had alcohol. I spoke to a doctor and he asked how much I’d been drinking. I replied 6 units and he looked a bit serious and said “a week?” When I clarified I’d had 6 units in total in last 28 weeks of being pregnant (all at weddings/big parties he laughed so loudly the nurses all looked over.

You’ll be fine

You need to drink quite a lot, quite regularly to develop foetal alcohol syndrome. One drink will be unlikely to do any harm.
Women didn’t used to test for pregnancy until about ten weeks, and often drank alcohol until they realised. Most were fine.

Clearly it’s better to abstain completely but stress and panicking isn’t healthy either.

You'll be fine so will baby :) my mum didn't know until about 10 weeks and drank till then I'm ok :) I think one glass at a celebration won't hurt

I drank alcoholic fizz (deliberately) on a few occasions. Never more than a glass and never more than once a month or so. DS is absolutely fine albeit currently throwing a tantrum because he has discovered he has toes 🤷🏻‍♀️

JanewaysBun · 14/02/2021 10:50

Another saying you'll be fine. I'm sure your DC will tease you about it when they are older lol!

saraclara · 14/02/2021 10:52

Remember that your parents generation drank normally through pregnancy. And your entire generation doesn't suffer from FAS.
My GP even recommended that I drank red wine or Guinness while breastfeeding.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 14/02/2021 10:53

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Smile

You'll be grand. If you're planning to breastfeed, the research now says it's fine to drink then too but obviously being drunk in charge of a baby is dangerous for baby and also not a lot of fun during the hangover, so you may want to avoid excess. But the odd glass with dinner or on special occasions is ok too.

PP said you’re husband is stupid, no he made a mistake. Surprised no one has said ltb. One glass is fine. Move on. Hug your husband, I bet he feels awful

sylbunny · 14/02/2021 11:21

I'm hoping to have a glass of alcoholic fizz today! I'm 30 weeks. Once I'm past 20 weeks in both pregnancies I've allowed myself to sip one small glass of a beer about once a month. Such a small amount of alcohol will have no effect whatsoever

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 14/02/2021 11:27

I wouldn't worry about it, I got pregnant at 21 and didn't know for ages. I did the whole party season at uni and got pissed everynight. My poor baby was soaked in alcohol for at least his first 4-6 weeks.
He's 40 now and perfectly normal although his wife might argue with that!
He is teetotal though.

Sixtyorforty · 14/02/2021 16:39

@Teakind no it wasn’t low alcohol- just standard!

Even if you'd drunk more, it would still be fine. Honestly.

candle18 · 14/02/2021 16:48

Don’t worry at all, one glass will be absolutely fine. I went to the hospital around 36 weeks as I was worried about something (I think it was lack of movements). The midwife obviously saw I was quite anxious and after checking me over, told me to go home and have a bath and a glass of wine!
