Hi everyone first time posting here so hang on in there šŸ˜šŸ‘šŸ¼

I’m currently 25 weeks pregnant with my 3rd I’m having a little girl. I have a 3 year old son and a 2 year old daughter soooo yes my hands are going to be extremely full! I have suffered with severe anxiety and depression for years and I am only 25. They have recently upped my medication too 150 mg of sertraline a day too help with my crippling anxiety. I would like too be sterilised after having this child. In an ideal world I’d like to have an elective c section and be sterilised at the same time.... I just have no idea who I need too contact first and wether they would actually do this for me? Any guidance tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks!!

Tell your midwife you want a c section as they’ll refer you to the consultant who can agree that. You can either tell the midwife or consultant about wanting sterilisation but be prepared to have to repeatedly request it before they’ll agree it. I asked at 36wks with my second (aged 31) and was told they were reluctant to agree because I was young and only had two - I only want two! The consultant I saw said he’d agree it if I came back for a further appointment but as I’d been there every 4 weeks and I wasn’t comfortable driving myself by that point I decided not to bother my husband driving me there yet again.

It's along while since I was contemplating the same, but I did discuss it during my last pregnancy and my Consultant said that it's possible but that there is a slightly greater risk of failure. Something about the fallopian tubes being swollen during pregnancy which means the clips can be too loose when they shrink back to normal if I remember rightly.
Anyway, i didn't need a section in the end so it didn't happen.
Do you need a section for other reasons? I don't imagine they'd be keen on you having a section specifically so you can be sterilised but it might be an option if you are having a section anyway.
If you don't neeed a section for some other reason, a sterilisation is normally a very straightforward day case procedure with a much quicker recovery than a section so it might be better to wait a bit and have a separate procedure, especially with 3 such young children to care for?
Either way, I would talk to your Midwife in the first instance and she should be able to arrange for an appointment with a Consultant to discuss things.
Good luck with everything.

They are usually reluctant at your age but as you have children are likely to do it for you. I would ask your midwife 1st, she will need to refer you to the consultants at the hospital.

I am also considering sterilisation at time of cesarean. My last term pregnancy was twins and I had an elective cesarean as they were breech. My midwife has already said I will be offered an elective cesarean this time. They offered me sterilisation last time but I only had 9 days notice before surgery and wasn't ready to say "no more" at that point. This one is number 6 for us, 13+3wk atm.

Snowymcsnowsony · 12/02/2021 12:53

I had 4 xdc by 24 op... Wasn't in the best of relationships. At 49 I have a very different life and more dc... Sterilisation is very final op.

ivfbeenbusy · 12/02/2021 14:19

You'd need to request with midwife and get a referral for an elective c section but your age will go against you? Also when I was in hospital I'm sure someone in the next bed was refused it due to covid etc as it prolongs the time etc spent in the theatre and is an "elective" procedure

Thanks everyone! I'm adamant I don't want anymore kids. I'll be phoning my midwife Monday morning too hopefully get some kind Of ball rolling

Hi all

I am 27 weeks pregnant and have two boys my first labour was fine but my second I had 3-4 degree tear. My consultant advised c section with my 3rd as at higher risk of tearing again and could course bowl problems for me afterwards. Both my first labours started naturally early term 37+6 and 38 weeks.i have heard they only book them at 39 weeks but I am worried and think I wont go past 38 without going into labour and I want to request a c sectional 37 to avoid complications. Do you know if they will do this I dont have my consultant until 2 more weeks.

autumncountryleaves · 12/02/2021 18:36

@Knight238345 I don’t think they do them before 39 weeks unless there is medical reason, such as pre eclampsia.

I had a massive PPH with my first during my EMCS and almost died, plus sepsis after and mines booked in for 39 weeks

Knight238345 · 12/02/2021 18:48

@autumncountryleaves thank you I am just worried I will go into labour before 39 and may have to end up going through with it and it coursing me bowl problems afterwards as my consultant said could course on going bowl problems if had bad tear again

autumncountryleaves · 12/02/2021 18:53

@Knight238345 my consultant said if I had a c section booked, and went into labour early it would be classed as a semi emcs and you would be taken down to theatre as soon as there was availability, so definitely speak to them!

Chelyanne · 12/02/2021 18:59

@Knight238345 If you are high risk of earlier labor they can book you in before 39 weeks, they prefer that gestation because the lungs are fully developed by then. If they decide to do an elective earlier they give you steroid injections to help speed up lung development.
I had our twins at 38wks and was given 2 steroid injections in the run up to surgery.

Definitely talk to your midwife but I'm the living proof it doesn't always work. I had my tubes cut when I had my third. 6 months later, surprise! I was pregnant again. I now have 4 under 4... What I wasn't told at the time is that having it done during a c section pushes the failure rate up as everything is swollen. If I'd known this, I would have still had it done but at a later time, not during my section. They cut my tubes again during my 4th section 6 months ago and so far, so good!

I too was told the failure rate of a sterilisation was higher if done during a cesarean. So I was refused at my 2nd one for this reason (aged 36).

However, after many attempts and unsuccessful requests at getting a tubal litigation agreed, I finally got it done aged 39. It was most definitely NOT an easy procedure to have given it has to be done under a GA, as opposed to a LA/spinal for a cesarean. My recovery was absolutely horrendous. Vomiting straight afterwards. 2 weeks of shoulder pain etc.

But the worst bit was still to come. A few years later I started to develop agonising abdominal pain. After many ultrasounds where nothing was found, I had a CT Scan. It still didn't find anything, apart from the fact that one of my clips had migrated 😳

So after all that trauma, I still wasn't protected from an unwanted pregnancy afterall 😬

I personally will never recommend this procedure to any woman, my 2 daughters included. Get your oh to have the snip instead. Much less invasive and quick and painless apparently šŸ˜‰

Chelyanne · 12/02/2021 19:26

I've read all about increased failure rate of the procedure. Dh point blank refuses to get a vasectomy, I don't get along with hormonal contraception and I fell pregnant with my twins less than a year after having a copper coil fitted. Still plenty of time to research and decide I suppose.

LittleBrownBaby · 12/02/2021 19:41

I spoke to my consultant and have requested it - but they don't offer it as standard on the NHS now (even though it's a 5 minute procedure and I'll already be on the operating table - and surely much less costly to the nhs than me having another baby). Anyway, they have to "put a case" together for you and it's either approved or not. I find out in the next few weeks (I'm 33 weeks and having my c section at 38 weeks). Good luck!

Whichnamepls · 12/02/2021 19:47

I asked about this too. They said to me firstly don't do it if you have any doubts at all and secondly that there is a chance it won't work. So that put me off!

Hopefully DP will agree to the snip because we definitely don't want anymore babies. Otherwise it's going to be a very platonic relationship!

@Chelyanne why won't your DP even consider the snip?

rawalpindithelabrador · 12/02/2021 19:49

It has a higher failure rate when done with CS.

Chelyanne · 12/02/2021 21:59

@whichnamepls he's read too many bad things about it, basically he's being a pansy.

LittleBrownBaby · 03/03/2021 22:13

Just as an update I have just been approved for this 2 weeks before my csection. Took a bit of persuasion from my consultant!
