Only 10 weeks, but spd type pelvic pain. How bad will it get?

This is my third pregnancy.

With my second I remember being in pain around pelvis from about the halfway point - but never to the point of seeing anyone or crutches.

I'm 10weeks gone with my third - getting definite pain. I'm scared how bad it will get if it is starting this early. Apart from anything else, I live up two flights of stairs with two under 5s.

Should I push to see a physio now, before it gets bad? And how do I go about getting a physio referral. I told my GP, who said 'Oh, that normally happens much later, due to the weight of the bump' and I didn't pursue it.

It's getting me down - tbh. I feel semi-disabled and unable to properly care for my family between endless nauseua and painful pelvis - and I can only see it getting worse for the next 6 months.

Hi Kif
that happened to me too. spd pain from 36w first preg, about 25w in 2nd and about 10w in 3rd. worried me too lots. but actually it didnt turn out to be too bad and didnt get much worse.

I did see a physio. my m/w referred me to the women's one. she showed me some exercises to do. but she also told me not to over do it which was the most helpful bit. i was always so active in pregnancy. I hated not rushing around but it did help to do as little as possible eg walking slowly instead of fast. left for nursery 10min earlier...
um, I cd try and remember what the exercises were. or maybe a website has the inf...
hopefully yours wont get bad either
and congrats on the pregnancy. 3 is great!

hi kif,

Quite a similar story to mine actually,

I also am on my third. With my first i was perfect the whole way through. My second i started feeling the pain of spd at 16 wks and saw my physio but there is not much they can do. He gave me a suppoet belt that velcros round ur tummy but i found it really uncomfortable as it moved up and down when i walked plus i found it difficult wearing it under clothes without being seen. He also let me try a body tubi-grip which in that pregnancy was useless as the baby was restricted from moving and didnt move much when i wore it, then went bananas when i took it of so i just braved the pain.

However this pregnancy i experienced the pain at 8 wks and have been using the tubi-grip and it had been a big help. Im now 31wks and have found that it is not as bad this time as it was around this stage in my last pregnancy but it has been getting steadily worse whenever i do too much walking. I do find that i wake with the pain sometimes and use the support when i need held together.

Basically it is ur bodies hormones making ur ligaments relax thus making ur bones in ur pelvis and pubic bone move and open.

As for the weight of ur bump this does interfere a bit but it isnt ur bump which causes the pain it just alters ur distribution of weight and makes u walk different. Compensating for the extra weight in front, u'll find u tilt back or slouch into ur bump which puts pressure on the sore areas. I went to a physio class and was advised to use pillows when sleeping, sit upright in a chair which is suitable for the lenghth between ur bottom and knee (eg the edge of ur chair meets ur knee bend and the small of ur back is supported with the backrest, if not add a pillow)so ur feet are on the floor. Basically don't sit cross legged, knees up on the sofa, or with ur hips higher than ur pelvis. These dont cure it, simply help aleviate the pain. Other than that i can only recommend resting for 10 minutes every hour or so (hard with kids i know i have 2 of my own under 5 and i babysit my niece who is 3 plus pg with spd), and using support when walking/standing for long periods. Also try climbing stairs sideways 1 step at a time. Weirdly i feel a gentle walk everyday has helped this time round. I have had to rush on occasion and found it excrusiating so gentle, slow and little is the key for a bearable outcome.

Sorry this post was so long not used to shortening words n stuff . Hope it was some help. Good luck for a pain free pregnancy in the coming months and congrats on the baby news. Best wishes Motherearth25

Thanks guys, that's made me feel much better. I was visualising rapid deteriration crutches jobby.

Is walking good or bad, then? I have the option of walk 20mins or tram - tend to walk. Dh reckons I need to get rid of my (large) handbag to avoid having lopsided weight distribution. Do you think that would aggravate it?

I'm going to try to see a physio, I think.

And glad to hear vote of confidence on going for the third! I think we're loopy barking mad to be voluntarily doing it all again!

totally loopy of course
but it is lovely having another baby
I'm getting broody for a 4th but actually 3 is enough!
I found with walking that slowly and gently short distances was ok, but brisk or far or hills were out. before I worked this out I did my usual rush up the steep hill and round the shops and back one day. next day cd hardly walk, terrible pain. well that taught me.
dont know about the handbag. perhaps physio can adv. also how to get out of car sitting on plastic bag to swing legs etc
wishing you a trouble free pg

Could it be ligaments softening. I didn't notice any of that with my first pregnancy, but it got worse with subsequent pregnancies and with my DD I had pain pretty much all the way through.

whomovedmychocolate · 02/11/2007 21:40

Had it on my first starting at 16 weeks - was in a wheelchair by 20 weeks but by week 24 (after seeing an osteopath) I was completely okay. So, don't fret too much.

Hi same here!

First pgcy started about 16 weeks and by 24 weeks woke up one morning and could not walk. Was in bed and moving about on all fours for 2 weeks.

Then it went as it came. Actually, the pain subsided and with advice from a physio and a belt could manage the pain and went back to work.
I did a lot of yoga wish paradoxically overstretched me but helped me manage the pain. I had a great teacher who adapted the postures to help me release tension from pelvis. In retrospect not so sure was goood idea.
Of course I paid for this during the night and I remember being in excrutiating pain when tossing and turning.
Wore support panties and had pillows squeezed between legs during the night.
I was never on crutches but in the end could hardly manage getting in and out of the car/bath etc...

This time I started feeling some shooting pain at 8 weeks. Now 12 and there is no mistake about what it is.
Dr advised to start wearing belt/panty now and do pelvis tilt as often as kegels to keep pelvis aligned.
Sports absolutely forbidden. Anyway, I can already feel the strain after walking for too long.

It is very reassuring reading your posts ladies.I was also imagining the worst scenario!

Does anyone also feel pain in buttocks? Do not remember this from last time.
It's like pressure/heaviness rather than shooting/stabbing pain.

Hi Ladies, I need help...I asked this question under conception, but no one has responded on that site since middle October. Has anyone had any experience getting pregnant after using Lupron Depot? I had a six month treatment for endometriosis & cysts. All is well now. My last treatment was the 1st week of May 2007. My last cycle was September 16, 2007. I am now 10 days late. I have cramping, headaches, leg cramps, hot flashes, and bloating. However, I'm not tired, no tender breasts, I was never nauseated with my other 2 children. You know I just can't seem to remember what I felt like when I was last pregnant. My current kids are 22 & 23. This is new to me again. I took 2 hpt's and they both came up negative. I took a blood test this past Tuesday and it came back negative. I'm going crazy. Any advice?

You need to go immediately to the doctor brownbaby, that sounds like ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome and needs treatment. I don't want to panic you but I had it and was immediately admitted to hospital. Phone your GP immediately. Good luck
