Baby responding to sound in womb

Hi,

I'm 31 weeks and have read multiple times that baby should be responding to sound from around 24 weeks. However my baby doesn't at all, even when I play music or sound directly to my bump she doesn't react. Its beginning to stress me out alot, please can anyone offer advice or tell me their thoughts? Thank you xx

Well - the baby doesn’t have much room for a boogie! If you are worried about lack of movement speak to your midwife (and have a cold glass of water - which is supposed to make the baby move).

I’ve read about babies who seem to react to music that has been around them when they were in the womb - so calm down when a soap opera theme comes on because that’s when mum would sit down and relax when pregnant.

Hi, I'm approaching 34 weeks.
Admittedly I haven't been playing any specific sounds to bump, but I haven't noticed any changes when I am somewhere loud/quiet/musical.

As long as they are moving when they should be: I don't think this one is an important milestone.

Their hearing is tested after birth and they will learn sounds on the outside. The head-start from familiarity inside the womb won't make a huge difference after the first few weeks.

No stressing Smile

Thanks for your reply! I am just concerned as I have read they should kick and move about in response to music or tv etc and she doesn't at all. Movement wise seems ok, I get regular movement throughout the day but nothing in response to sounds. Xx

I remember fretting about this when pregnant with my first- I convinced myself she’d have hearing problems and was so nervous when they did the newborn hearing check! She was absolutely fine and her hearing is perfect 🙂

Thank you Thack! That is reassuring, it's my first pregnancy and my mind is just racing more and more the further along I get!
Hope everything goes well with your little one :)

Thank you thebearandthemare! Yeah it's so worrying isnt it, it's so reassuring to see other people have experienced the same and everything's turned out ok though. Thank you so much xx

Never heard this
Nor did my babies react to music
Only moved when I ate

Emmax92 · 10/02/2021 14:59

Oh right, yes she definitely loves it when I eat haha! Xx

Some babies do, but some don’t. Some just aren’t fussed!

As long as you’re feeling normal movement, don’t worry. If movement has stopped, have a chat to your midwife.

I think my friend tried just about everything to get her babies to dance or kick or whatever, none of them ever did! Another friend had babies that seemed to respond to any change in volume. Horses for courses Smile

SendMeHome - thank you!

Yeah movements seem ok so I think I'll just try not to think about it too much from now on, I did wonder if shes maybe just a very chilled out baby haha! Thank you xx

As a PP said, some babies do, some don't.
Mine have never responded to sound. 3rd pregnancy and 32 weeks.
So don't worry

Emmax92 · 10/02/2021 16:38

Thank you, I'm going to try to forget about it from now on :) xx

My baby doesn't respond to specific sounds. DH has tried talking to him and he just ignores him. My guess is that it's probably fine but for me, even if he does have a hearing issue we would deal with it if he's otherwise healthy. I think I'm constantly so worried that there might be something life-threatening (no evidence for this - just worried) that it doesn't even register as a concern!

4amWitchingHour · 10/02/2021 17:08

Your baby hasn't read the books Smile remember that for when they're born too!

Mine definitely didn't move to music, or any other sounds that I noticed. He loves music now though (6 months).

Emmax92 · 10/02/2021 19:07

Yeah I get that, this worry is on top of the massive anxiety about everything that could possibly be an issue. I wouldn't love my baby any less if there was a hearing issue it's just something I've latched onto and started to obsess over a little :) xx
