Pain from Transverse baby

Anyone else here with a Transverse baby causing them bother?

My previous baby was also transverse until around 34 weeks but I can't remember then causing me this much discomfort and pain. I couldn't sleep last night as I just couldn't get comfy no matter what position I was in. I had pain from kidney area and my back is agony today with sharp twinges everytime baby moves. I'm 20 weeks so I'm dreading baby staying like this for many more weeks to come.

Any coping tips?

My baby was transverse for the majority of my last pregnancy. I'd apply pressure on the bump in order to get him to move if it was really painful. Aside from that, trying to prop myself up with cushions and trying to relax my abdominal muscles seemed to help take the edge off temporarily.

Following with interest... I'm now pregnant again and bracing myself! I started feeling pain at 18 weeks (small bump, but average size baby...) and the rib pain towards the end was quite something!

No advice afraid, just sympathy! DS1 was 10lbs 3oz at birth and was transverse right up until nearly the very end when he moved. I just remember that hideous feeling of never being able to get comfortable - laying down felt crap, sitting up felt crap, urghhhhhhhhh!!

The feeling is just horrendous already and I'm only half way! Last night the side of my bump was so hard and such a weird shape, tried having a little wiggle about and a rub to get him moving but he was obviously far to comfy! I'm absolutely shattered today so I'm hoping I'll be able to sleep through it tonight.

Oh yeah not forgetting the rib pain that's get to come. My ribs used to feel like they were on fire at times!

I did a bit of Googling after reading your post and discovered that what I thought was pain due to a small bump in my last pregnancy (measured 30 at 40 weeks!) may have been less to do with a small bump (and what I thought was baby going 'in' against my ribs etc) and more to do with being transverse... my midwife never mentioned it, but it seems that transverse babies are known for causing a lot of discomfort!

The spinning babies website gives exercises you could try to move baby: www.spinningbabies.com/pregnancy-birth/baby-position/sideways-transverse/

Hi,OP
Did you try to go on all fours during the day?If you can do it and try to wiggle your hips at the same time it may encourage the baby to change its position. If this is not working, try all fours and raise your bum, head on the floor/cushion/mat.You can raise your hips even further if you can do it on the sofa, hips up/head towards the floor.
It is usually used in hope to turn the breech baby or transverse babies.

@Poppins2016 funny you should mention measuring smaller. With my previous transverse pregnancy, DS seemed to flick between laying transverse to then laying head down with each midwife appointment. So sometimes I was measuring really really small and the next huge when he'd changed his position again. They'd even estimated he would be around 9/10lbs because of it, when in fact he was only 6lb 5oz!

@3JsMa I hadn't until last night when I suddenly remembered doing it with my first DS, so I gave it ago briefly. Will definitely start doing that though as this is just far too uncomfortable.

I’m 26 weeks and my baby is also transverse. This is an interesting thread to read as I have been so uncomfortable in bed and sitting in the evening. This might explain it!

Poppins2016 · 10/02/2021 16:05

@savanahnana it's interesting, from what I've been reading it seems that some babies don't have the space (or cord length) for a different position... I consistently measured too small even when baby was engaged, so in my case I wonder whether it was a combination of small space + his preference (no cord issues)... guess I'll never know! It'll be interesting to see what happens this time round (currently only 10 weeks, but if this baby prefers transverse I guess there's not long until the aches and pains set in).
