Gestational diabetes/type 2 diabetes question

Looking for some advice or knowledge.

Second pregnancy, had GD with first pregnancy, so was expecting it on my current one too.

Went for GD test at 12 weeks and assume everything was fine as i didnt get a call. They informed me that i will need to test again at 28 weeks.

So been tested last week and had the call from midwife, who just said my fasting levels were high that they suspect type 2 diabetes. She wasn’t really helpful and said to wait and see diabetic midwife

Has anyone else had this? Im so confused as to how I went from seemingly fine at 12 weeks to type 2 (no drastic change in diet and have actually been trying to eat better as I was expecting it)

Can they diagnose type 2 with just one fasting test? im really confused how they came to that conclusion

Waiting for the appt at the hospital but any words/advice would be helpful

Gestational diabetes is progressive so certainly possible to have it now at 28 weeks and not at 12. You are also more likely to have it having previously had it.

@Bert2020 thank you. Like I said I was expecting to be told I have GD, i’m just confused as to how they have come to the conclusion that I possibly have type 2 diabetes and not just regular GD.

Sorry just realised that my first post might not have been too clear.

I meant I don’t know how I went from fine at 12 weeks and now 28 weeks been told I have type 2 and not gestational diabetes.

Being a regular midwife maybe she simply doesn’t know and is guessing. Could be to do with your levels? I believe it’s the fasting one being particularly high that makes them lean towards type 2. Unfortunately once you have had GD the chances of type 2 are increased considerably. I would think until you have had the baby and your annual blood checks they couldn’t know for sure? Did you have an annual check after your first pregnancy?

Thanks guys, will check out the fb page.

@Bert2020 yes Im really hoping that she wasn’t fully informed. With my previous GD myfastinf levels were incredibly high and was on insulin

I had a 6 month check and I was pre-diabetic and had to do 2 tests for that but managed to reverse it by my 1 year check.

I would also like to assume they wouldn’t be able to diagnose type 2 until after pregnancy.

I had my head wrapped around GD that will go away but type 2 is a big blow to have Sad

Try and put type 2 out of your mind for now. The good news is with diet you can delay or stave off type 2 completely and the GDUK page is the best place to start.

I had GD with my two previous and now with this pregnancy. I got diagnosed at 13 weeks this time round and the consultant I saw said it was likely I had type two diabetes. This left me confused as after having my first child I had yearly blood tests to check for diabetes and have never been notified of anything untoward.

Anyway, fast forward a couple of weeks to when I see an actual diabetic consultant re my current pregnancy. I ask her about the previous consultant's comment and she had a look back through my blood history. She says my bloods have all been fine with no indication of any sign of type 2 diabetes and she apologised for the comment made when it shouldn't have been.

Hopefully you'll get the same reassurance once you see an actual diabetic consultant.

Ignore the type 2 part for now, you won't know until you're postpartum whether you've tipped into Type 2 Diabetes or just having GD again.

The chances are greater for type 2 if you've had GD but you can't diagnose it yet. That person should not have said so with so much certainty. I expect they just miscommunicated.

@Catlady21 thank you, that’s really reassuring!! Really bad that they make comments like that.

And everyone else, thanks for your comments

Will try and focus on pregnancy and healthy eating for now and hopefully the consultant and midwife will be more reassuring.

I was really cross she has said that as she knew nothing of my history, hadn't looked at my previous bloods, she just told me it was too early for it to be GD. I was diagnosed at 16 weeks with my first and 20 something weeks with my second, so this is the norm for me! She just caused unnecessary worry.

I really hope you have some news to put your mind at rest too.
