Sonographer gender inkling at 12wks?

Hello all - I had my 12 week scan this morning and the sonographer announced towards the end that she had an inkling about the gender based on two angles she’d seen.

I hadn’t proactively asked her about the gender as assumed you couldn’t tell this early but was curious and she said a) she’d seen between the legs and b) the direction of the genitalia. She showed me the direction which was parallel to the spine - indicative of a girl. She said it’s not 100% but seems odd to proactively offer this info if she wasn’t somewhat sure?

Any opinions / thoughts on this?

Yeah it's the nub..if it grows parallel to the spine it's a girl and a boys grows up at an angle apparently. Did she ask if you even wanted to know first?

I'm no expert, but the sonographer at my 12 week scan told me it was a boy. It wasn't: I have the girl to prove it Grin Sex scanning is really not at all reliable at that stage, I wouldn't put any store by it.

Yep, my sonographer correctly predicted the sex of ours at 11 weeks. She said she was about 70% sure. So clever!

Sounds like nub theory. It's not very accurate because the genitals haven't formed yet. 16 weeks is supposed to be the earliest you can reliably tell I think.

Yes with my second child (not in the U.K.) the sonographer said he was pretty confident on the sex of the baby at 12w. We found out for certain a couple of weeks later via a NIPT and he was correct. I think in the right hands if they get good views at this stage they can be pretty accurate.

SohoOrigami · 09/02/2021 18:43

I mean, there's a 50% chance of being right. Ask 100 people what the sex is and about 50 will predict it accurately...so forgive me for not being too impressed that it has turned out correct in some cases!

I'm mentioning it only because I didn't mind what sex mine was, but as it turned out I did find it surprisingly difficult to have believed one thing for 8 weeks and then find out the opposite. So unless it was a NIPT test, I just really wouldn't advise taking it seriously at 12 weeks.

My sonographer told us at our nuchal fold scan at 11.5 weeks (in Germany). My husband has jokingly said "there's my boy" to which she just replied, "no, she's definitely a girl" and proceeded to show us the nub and explained angles and she'd never been wrong. I took it with a pinch of salt but every scan she did she said the same and was very confident. Pleased to say, I did have a girl!

The nub theory is actually extremely accurate at 12 weeks. Slightly more accurate for boys I believe.

Ah so interesting! Thanks all for your replies! I was convinced it was a boy (there haven’t been any girls in my husband’s family and there are MANY cousins and uncles) but she made a compelling argument for a girl based on what she could see!

I didn’t ask to find out (she only told me she thought it was a girl after I asked her) which makes me think if she’s proactively offering up an “inkling” she must believe she has some data to back it up.....

I actually had a Harmony test done two weeks ago and said I didn’t want to know the gender but have since decided maybe I do, so perhaps I can call up the clinic to see if they’ve got that data on file, even if it wasn’t in my report! We shall see!
