“Pike” position at 35 weeks??

Fully prepared for people to laugh and think I’m crazy and just plain odd here but here we go...

I had a growth scan today as they thought they baby was too big, but my bump too small (go figure). Am 35 weeks today.

During the scan, they could see the baby’s legs straight and right up to its face, a bit like when a gymnast is in the pike position. (The legs weren’t bent up to the chest). Doesnt that seem SO uncomfortable for the baby? Considering it’s getting nearer to the due date, I wouldn’t have thought the position would change THAT much, and for the baby to be in that pike position must be so uncomfortable and painful? Any thoughts?? (Yes laugh all you want, I’m sure this is a stupid question).

Baby also estimated to weigh 6lb5 today which would mean 9lb on due date if things stayed on track and were accurate. What are peoples experience with accuracies at growth scans? (Don’t know the sex)

They have more room than you'll think to move around. The lower of our twins managed to turn from head down to breech somewhere between 32 & 36wk, the consultant was amazed she'd managed to do it.
I do know a few people who have been told to expect big babies and them come out a very average size so they can go either way.

All growth scans I've had have shown them all ahead on growth and not been wrong.
Our 2nd I can't remember any weight estimates but he was 4wk ahead, was 10lb 12oz at 40+5. Our 3rd was ahead but not quite as much as 2nd and was 9lb 10oz at 40+2. Our twins were estimated at 5lb each at 32wk, born 38wk at 8lb 5oz & 8lb 11oz (an average twin is about 6lb).

It's called a "frank" or "extended" breech.
I've discovered mine is in the same position at my 38 wk appt, and now frantically trying to turn it! I'd advise you to start ASAP!

Wow Chelayne, you were carrying 17 Ib of babies. That is impressive. Could you even move towards the end of your pregnancy?

Cormoransjacket · 07/02/2021 12:19

Sorry, I got your name wrong. It should be Chelyanne.

kittenpeak · 07/02/2021 13:06

Yes @Chelyanne I was thinking the same! Poor you!

@Cormoransjacket @kittenpeak

My husband broke his leg when I was 26wk with them so I had to keep plodding on until they were born, he had the cast off the days after delivery so was able to take some of the load after my cesarean. I'm tall so was still managing to drive, school runs, shopping and all the household stuff with 3 older kids. I had spd too so it was a painful and exhausting last trimester but I manged pretty well. They were worth it! Not put me off having another, currently 12+1wk.

Hey!
Nothing to say about the position however, babies do get themselves into all kinds of positions we'd think are uncomfortable.
My baby at the last scan had 1 foot next to their head and the other up near my ribs!

As for the growth scans, my first and second babies were opposite.
Baby number 1 measured they would be almost 12lbs by 40 weeks so was induced at 38 weeks which on the scan at the time measured 10lbs4oz, he was born at 7.2lb.
My second one measured 6lb4oz at the 40 week scan and was born at 9lb, 6 days later

I used to work in a maternity ward and babies that had been in that position in the womb (either breech or not) would lie in the cots like a roast chicken straight after birth. Their legs would pop right up again with their feet by their ears rather than lie in the normal baby 'frog' position with bent knees.
Worth getting a hip scan though after birth as there may be a higher risk of hip dysplasia.
