Hey so had a Extra scan the other day because of on off bleeding the last few weeks although baby is fine and healthy they said mr placenta is lying low and I need some extra scans. I didn't have this in my first 2 pregnancies and it's giving me anxiety! Has anyone else had this or got this?? Should I be worrying? I don't want to look it up on Google because I'm worried I'll see awful things.

Don't google...you will only ever hear worse case scenarios (about everything in life). Most people with a low lying placenta find that their's naturally moves higher as the pregnancy progresses. However, if it doesn't, it could increase the chance of bleeding later in pregnancy and will most likely result in a c section (as the placenta is covering the cervix and therefor covers your birth canal). However, this isn't the case for everyone! Most move as mentioned. Do not worry. You're getting extra scans and care, you will be fine :) x

No I have managed to stop myself from googling it it's usually the first thing I do but way to scared now! It just scared me it's something i hadn't heard off and they got someone else to have a look too. They've already booked me a scan ect so hoping it will move as It all gets bigger just a little worrying thank you xx

The earlier it is noticed the more time it has to move out of the way.

The lower of my twins placenta was covering the cervix at their 20 week scan. I had growth scans every 4 weeks with them and each time it got a little higher. By 32 weeks it had moved enough for me to go for a natural birth. That wasn't to be as she then decided to turn breech and I ended up with a cesarean anyway. My cesarean was a much better experience than I'd expected, thinking of opting for another if I get to term with current pregnancy.

It's quite common in early (ish) pregnancy and they often move. I had a low lying placenta with dc1 until about 25 weeks when it shifted itself up as my uterus stretched.

They'll want to see if it moves as it can lead to severe bleeding during labour if it's over your cervix. If it's in a problematic place at 36 weeks they'll offer you a C-section

Thank you ladies I'm praying it moves up as c section is literally my worse nightmare! X

I was told I had a low lying placenta at my 20 week scan. At my 28 week scan it had moved up enough to no longer be any concern.

Teakind · 06/02/2021 09:26

Hi OP, did they give you any more information? For example if it's covering your cervix or just close to it? Did they say how far away it was if it wasn't covering it?

I was told I had a low lying placenta at my 20 week scan when I was pregnant with my DS. They like it to be at least 2cm clear of the cervix and mine was 1.6. They checked again at 28 weeks and it had moved out the way. The same thing happened to my friend.

CG2021 · 06/02/2021 09:32

I was told the same at my 20 week scan, but the sonographer told me not to worry, apparently 9 out of 10 move out of the way by the scan at 32 weeks. She seemed completely unfazed by it which really put my mind to rest. I did Google because I can’t help myself! But it reiterated what I’d been told Smile

Mine was low lying at 20 weeks and still was last week at 34 weeks. They are not scanning me again til 38 weeks which worries me slightly but I'm assured it'll be ok.....they also reckon it can still move so I just need to wait see. Not great as I just wanted to know one way or another last week....but not a lot i can do 😣just wanted to mentally prepare myself either way!!

I think the vast majority do move up OP and it's more common than I had realised.

Hi, I’m in the same position! Had my 20 week scan and was told I have a low lying placenta. I’ve to be scanned again at 32 weeks to check if it’s moved. My midwife didn’t seem too concerned as most do move up but like you, I’m terrified of a c-section.

Mylasmummy2102 · 06/02/2021 10:48

Thank you all for your replies you have reassured me a lot! My next scan is in may when I'll be 32 weeks so hoping it will have moved up by then xx
