Maternity allowance national insurance help

Hi,

I hope this ok to post on here.
I am pregnant with my second and currently self employed. I will be applying for maternity allowance in 6 weeks time (when I am 26 weeks) the problem is I would not have submitted a self assessment for this past year as that doesn’t go in until April therefore they will not know if I have earnt enough to pay class 2 NI contributions.
I have read you can pay them early to still be entitled to the full maternity allowance money. How does this work? Do I go ahead and apply for MA and then I will be contacted by HMRC to pay the NI voluntary or is this something I have to sort out before I put my maternity allowance form in?

Also if I do pay the class 2 NI in advance and I end up earning less so wouldn’t have had to pay NI for the year will they make me pay my maternity allowance back?

Sorry for all the questions finding it very confusing!

Thanks

Hi,

I hope I’m right in what I’m telling you, but this is based on my recent experience! If unsure though, give HMRC a call, I’ve done that before and they were really helpful!

When you fill out the forms, it tells you on there that if you haven’t paid enough NI (or any in this case) to qualify for the full rate, that they’ll write to you to give you the opportunity to pay it once they’ve received your application. You’ll need a MATB1 certificate from the midwife which confirms your due date and you send that off with the form - the midwife asked me if I needed this so they’ll know.

If you pay the self employment NI voluntary, then it doesn’t matter if you don’t earn enough, as long as you’ve paid it (or pay it when they give you the opportunity to!), then you’re entitled to it. So even if you haven’t earned enough to qualify, because you’ll be paying the NI voluntary, you’re treated as though you have earned enough if that makes sense!

They go by a ‘test period’ of dates which you’ll see when you fill in the form, which is when they check to see if you’ll have paid enough NI yet. I’m due in April and I had paid enough NI in those dates.

So basically, fill in the form (which is way less scarier than it seems!), send it off with your MATB1 form and wait for them to get back to you!

Hope that makes sense and I haven’t confused you!

That’s perfect! Thank you for your reply
I was worried I would get the opportunity to pay my national insurance voluntary but then when I do my self assessment if I haven’t earned enough to qualify to pay that class 2 NI then I might have to pay my maternity allowance back which would not have been good!
Thank you so much for your help

@Harvey19 hello, was following your post as your situation is the same as mine. Had baby a few weeks ago and had a letter for class 2 NI payment request.
What happened once you paid this? I was on the twenty odd pounds a week and had a payment but will it now go up after this payment?!
The letters don't tell you anything and after being on hold to HmRC for a hour twice now I've given up with them!!
Thanks

Hi,

I received a letter saying I would receive the £27 (can’t remember exactly how much) and then a while after I then received a letter asking if I wanted to pay voluntary NI class 2 for the test period so i did this and then a couple of weeks later I received another letter letting me know I would get the full amount and since then my payments have started.
