I've been for a 38 week growth scan today and been told I've got too much amniotic fluid 😔 My last scan was only 2 weeks ago and everything was fine then. I've had a TORCH blood test to see if an infection has caused it, or it could be GD or it could just be one of those things and everything is fine. I'm worried sick now! I've got a section booked for next Wednesday but have been told if my waters go before then I've got to phone for an ambulance due to an increased risk of cord prolapse...it's all really scary. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this?

I had this badly with my son. I ended up in hospital at 38 weeks before a section at 39 weeks. This was to mitigate the risk of spontaneous labour. It was boring, but fine.
No reason for it - just one of those things. It was hugely uncomfortable though, and baby was still turning somersaults to the bitter end.
In theatre they caught 2.3l of fluid, and I soaked everyone as well, so there was an awful lot in there.

My son had to go to SCBU for a couple of days for a wet lung, but was / is completely fine. I had hypothermia, most likely from the shock of losing an estimated 1.5 stone so very quickly. I was also fine quickly.

It’s a worrying thing, but it’s not uncommon (2 of us on an antenatal ward of 4 had it), so everyone from our paramedics to health care assistants to consultants knows exactly what to do for it.

Yes, I was diagnosed with this at 34 weeks. I was told the same about cord prolapse but everything was absolutely fine. Consultant brought me in for induction on my due date but my waters went naturally when I was in hospital. Had a straightforward birth and a very healthy baby girl.

I know it’s scary but try not to worry or google too much. There was another thread about this a few days ago with lots of positive stories if you can find it, might help reassure you x

I had it with 2 singletons and one of my twins. It caused no issues at all but it is like a waterfall when your waters go lol.

Chelyanne · 05/02/2021 12:08

Both singletons were natural, twin cesarean delivery

Thanks so much for the reassurance. I ended up on delivery suite last night due to contractions but they ended up dying down. I'm now on a ward having observations and they've brought forward my c section to Monday - at least I don't have to worry for too much longer!

I was diagnosed with this about a month or so ago, and am 39+5 now. It is only a mild case (max levels were 10cm which then dropped to 8.4cm at my last scan) but still worrying all the same. Have been told about cord prolapse etc but I don’t think my levels were high enough to merit them offering me a section, which personally I’m glad of. Hopefully everything goes well, and at least you’re in the best place should you go into labour spontaneously before your section!

I had it through my 4th pregnancy, from 20th week scan every 4 weeks,TORCH test was negative. On the top of that they were saying my DD has short femur(indication of Downs Syndrome). As it was my 4th pregnancy I was a bit aprehensive as it didn't seem diffrent than my previous ones.
They didn't pressure me to have CS and I was also fed, said I don't want any more investigations.
My waters broke sponataneusly, although there was a tinge of meconium (they were a bit yellow, not really green) and a trickle rather than gush. 1.5 hours later my DD was born, all fine,7lb5oz.I asked midwives how much waters there was after she was born and they said very little.
So not really polyhydramnios.

I had this, and ended up with 12 doctors and nurses in the delivery room they were all so concerned- it was all good, and my daughter is 6 and wonderfully healthy! Just one of those things! It was a terribly worrying pregnancy, but a great birth, and absolutely no problems since (apart from homeschooling a six year old through lockdown 😱😂) And I've had no health problems, so all good - it can get a bit forensic during pregnancy, they're looking out for you, but the endgame is generally a bonny baby!

HoppingPavlova · 05/02/2021 22:08

Yes, I had it but was due to birth defects with the baby. These were detected via ultrasound so would not be a surprise so no one should sit there worrying if this is causing their polyhydramnios.

I was like a whale and had every Tom, Dick and Harry at the shops saying ‘definitely twins’ or ‘any day now obviously’ when I was ages away from due date. Because obviously I had no idea of my due date and u/s doesn’t pick up twinsConfused. I had a natural birth and everyone was drenched and it was in no way a small mop up job for the poor cleaner.

Cityzen74 · 05/02/2021 22:42

Sending you best wishes Flowers. I had this and when they broke my waters my DH said it was unbelievable and went over everyone! Baby was fine - no problems and just one of those things. Take care x

Thanks everyone, it's reassuring to hear of all the positive outcomes. My bump isn't even very big so it was surprising to hear I had the excess fluid. In fact, most people tell me it's very neat (especially for a 3rd baby). The section is for other reasons otherwise I'd be happy to go natural regardless of the fluid. I'm reassured that it'll be happening on Monday though so I don't have too long to worry about my waters going and cord prolapse. These babies keep us on our toes don't they!

Recent blood test show I have tested positive for Torch, I don’t know what this means. I’m 35 weeks. Any info to help me understand this would be appreciated

Chely · 09/12/2021 19:32

Had it multiple times.
Baby 2, 3, larger of our twins and 6. I had GTT with all and within normal ranges. They were all BIG babies. 2 & 3 were unassisted vaginal births with no cord issues, like a waterfall when waters were broken. Twins and 6 were c-sections, no problems caused by the fluid but it flooded the floor with number 6. Funny thing is all the ones that had it have the same blood group as dh (got my recessive gene) and the other 2 have the same as me so I do wonder if it has a genetic link.
