Honestly, i also downloaded the app but i still don't see a pattern (31w4) or a real use to it.
I only do kick count if i feel i haven't felt her, which usually is just me being too busy and not focused.
Babies have very different habits when kicking. Some are super active some less. Some have days on and days off etc...
I don't think there is a good and not good in terms of number of kicks per hour.
For me it's been more like trusting my instinct so far!!! (And i have anterior placenta)

Chelyanne · 03/02/2021 12:01

None of ours ever had a pattern. They weren't much better after birth either.
If I was ever worried about movement I just had a cold drink and they'd react.

Was even harder with twins because I had to try work out which one was moving, 1 was on my left side (hd then breech in last few weeks) and the other transverse near my ribs (her head near her sister).

You don't need to count the amount of kicks. You just need to keep an eye on routine. So if she's active for you at 10-11am that probably won't change for your pregnancy. You're only 28 weeks so movements will increase and kicks will get harder. As long as your routine stays the same and she's active at the same points everyday, that's good.
But please if the routine changes or your concerned ring the hospital. I had a text book pregnancy with my first, the day before I was due I was having reduced movements. I should of gone in sooner in the day but didn't. I went in that evening after an hour of monitoring they took me up for an emergency c section. She was in intensive care for 10 days. Luckily she was ok, but they did tell me if I hadn't of gone in when I did, the outcome would of been very different. Don't ever feel like your wasting their time because you're a little bit concerned. They always say it's better to check every time.

Superscientist · 03/02/2021 13:32

I didn't kick count, I did half wonder if I would notice if she kicked less. I had one day of reduced movements and I was wide awake from 2 am because I knew something had changed. All was ok when I got checked out. After this I worried less about whether I count kicks or not

Lissie1986 · 03/02/2021 14:11

It's crazy because you got told so many diff things regarding kick counts online dont you, I have prosteria placenta so I felt her very early on around 13 weeks, andnpast couplenof monthsni had noticed she will move roughly around 10am or 11am more and then some throughout the day bit from btween 10 11ish there will be more movement than the rest of the day, she has her wild kick days and also quiet ones around a week later but I was reading last night that a distressed baby could move less and also not have a routine at 28 weeks or after and it got me thinking ha ... I have waited so many years for this little baby after 1 misscarriage and an ectopic and fertility issues for 9yrs after those losses and then a failed ivf round last feb .. I ended up getting preg naturally 6 months after the ivf so I'm very anxious throughout this pregnancy and wen you read about routine ect and distress it really gets by a thinking lol ... I think only routine I can notice is the 10/11 am kicks and moving more during the day than the evening or night.. i hope everyones having a good pregnancy and thank you for your replies it's a big help having some advice from other preg woman and mums on here x

My baby has a pattern, he kicks quite a bit while I’m going to sleep, then has a few long kicking sessions every few hours through the night.
Not as much in the day, just a couple of kicks every few hours.

I think it’s more important to just try and notice the routine so you can tell if something changes.

I’m not using an app, I think it would stress me out - but I’m confident I would notice if the movements changed, which is the most important thing.

SunnySideUp2020 · 03/02/2021 14:50

@ooohbriefcase
Can I ask what happened with your daughter?
What was the issue?

I find it hard to just go in for monitoring if i don't feel her for instance in the morning as much. I tend to wait for later that day to really be sure it's not just her sleeping...
Also my midwife never even talked to me about reduced movements. I only know about it from Mumsnet.
What i am saying is i am always paranoid that i am a nuisance if i go or text or ring and it turns out it's nothing. Especially now with covid where they try hard to limit coming and going from the maternity hospital.

But reading stories like yours really makes me realise i should probably be a bit more proactive.

mariebaby3 · 03/02/2021 15:16

I was told by my midwife that they don't really look at kick counts anymore and to just keep an eye on what's normal for me and to get in touch if anything seems unusual.

ooohbriefcase · 03/02/2021 16:32

@SunnySideUp2020 they're not entirely sure what happened. All they know is that there was an issue with the placenta and there was a bleed. They don't know why. She was fairly small when she was born, very grey and needed 2 blood transfusions. They think she stopped growing because of this bleed. I had to have a huge anti D injection because the bleed was so large.
They told me if I had gone in 24 hours later she wouldn't have survived.
I had no idea this was all going on inside me. The only thing I noticed was reduced movements on that 1 day. That's why whenever I see posts like this I always mention to ring up and go in if you're at all concerned. If I didn't and waited that extra day my DD wouldn't be here now. Reduced movements are so important!

ooohbriefcase · 03/02/2021 16:44

@SunnySideUp2020 also they will never think you're wasting their time. I always hear them telling other women there that it's better to come in and it's no bother at all. As they did with me.

"Also my midwife never even talked to me about reduced movements."
I'm shocked at that. I would mention that to someone because they really isn't good enough for a midwife.

BlueberryPancake21 · 03/02/2021 16:59

I find this so difficult! My midwife keeps saying "it's what's normal for you and your baby. You'll know if it's different". Well I'm 31 weeks and I have no clue! Some days he's kicking away when I wake up at 6. Other days I wake up at 6 and don't feel anything until 8 (and that's after drinking ice water and jiggling him). Usually I get a lot of kicks after dinner, but some days barely anything. Some days it's "arm day", some days it's "leg day" and some days it's "bum wriggle day". All feel completely different even though he's in the same position. Add in that I get Braxton Hicks every day at 5 minute intervals in the evening from about 4pm and I'm a mess! I've been in for monitoring 3 times already but honestly if I went in every time something changed I'd be there 3 or 4 times a week. I really don't want to miss something but there has to be a limit? I think I just have to keep going in when I'm really worried... I think a lot of people have a similar experience to me but that isn't helping right now. It feels like the medical teams have put the responsibility onto me without the right training/tools.

SnooperTrooper12345 · 04/02/2021 11:26

Kick counting is outdated really. Its more based on what is normal for your baby.

I got told to kick count and the 10 in 1 hour. But if I'd have done that, I wouldn't have known something was wrong with my baby.
And 10 in 1 hour was a lot less than is normal for her.

It's all about getting to know your baby's routine/activeness

Pearson26 · 05/02/2021 08:58

Hi ladies - when would you say you noticed a routine (for those that did?)? I've been feeling baby since 16.5 weeks and only in the last few days have I felt regular movement throughout the day, but some days it seems really reduced compared to other days. I'm almost 20 weeks so believe it's mega early to be able to establish any sort of routine, but there seems to be so much conflicting advice out there!

Is it normal to have 'noticeable' and 'not-so-noticeable' days in the earlier weeks?

Lissie1986 · 05/02/2021 10:13

I think from what I have read from posts I've posted in the past it's normal to have quieter days, I spoke to midwife at my 25week appointment about it and said I've felt baby since 13vweeks n she will have her active days but some days can be much much less she reassured me to that it's normal.

@Pearson26 my “routine” became more established probably around 26 weeks.

It’s not like clockwork though - I don’t monitor what time I get movements, I just know that I get more kicks at about the time I go to bed, I wake up in the night with kicks and have them every 3 or 4 hours through the day.
