Long drawn out experience but basically I am about 5 weeks pregnant with a copper coil. It has pierced the uterus and is in ‘the pouch of Douglas’. Apparently this is very rare and each doctor I have seen has given me varying risks. The latest conversation mentioned the risk of perforation to bladder of bowel as they can’t remove it during pregnancy. Also complications during labour due to there being a perforation somewhere in the uterus. I don’t think I can take that risk when I have a healthy one year old that needs me. But no one can tell me the actual chance of these risks and they only tell me when I ask directly.

Hi Rosie, I wish had advice to offer but I haven’t as yet. I have just found out I am also pregnant with a coil still in place (I can still feel my strings!) and my GP doesn’t not seem interested at all, he has told me to wait a few weeks before he will refer me for an early scan but I have NO idea how far gone I am as I haven’t had a period since October 2020. I’m lost on what to do next!!

I hope you are okay and get the answers you need xx

Not had a pregnancy with one still present in the body so can't tell you how things could go. There are risks of it migrating and damaging other parts so I imagine they would keep a close eye on you if you decided to continue the pregnancy. Only you can decide if you are willing to take the risk or not. This is such a rare occurance that it may be a big learning curve for the doctors if they've not dealt with a case before. Good luck whatever you decide.

I fell pregnant with my twins less than a year after having the copper coil fitted. They couldn't find mine on scans though so I had a normal pregnancy and delivered 2 healthy girls via cesarean at 38 weeks.

Wow thanks for your replies, it really is a rollercoaster.
@Jmt93 I wouldn’t settle for that, I was in for a scan less than 12 hours after I found out. To rule out ectopic etc. I’d ring your hospital’s early pregnancy assessment/emergency gynae yourself.
@Chelyanne you’ve said exactly what I’m worried about. Since posting I’ve actually spoken to a consultant willing to remove it in the next week. And twins! What a shock!
