Bikini wax: is it ok during pregnancy?

Sorry to start another trivial thread, but I am dying to have a much-needed tidy up. I am 26 weeks and have resisted thus far but now it's really getting a bit out of control. What has stopped me is I am worried the 'shock' from the pain of the wax (don't laugh, all those who have gone through childbirth) and the fact it's so close to where the baby is lying will bring on an early labour or something. Am I being ridiculous? Is it perfectly safe? I have had a few early miscarriages before this so I haven't wanted to do anything that could put the baby at risk. But if this is a baseless fear I would quite like to look a bit more 'groomed' again. Would love to hear from any of you who have had bikini waxes while pregnant.

And I can't resist asking: in that instant that the wax (and everything else) is ripped out, how DOES that pain compare to the pain of childbirth? Apart from childbirth going on for slightly longer, of course...

Bikini waxing during pregnancy is safe. It might sting a bit more due to all the extra hormones flying around. Try to hold the skin as taut as possible while the waxing is taking place - this makes it hurt less (hope that makes sense!)

I have a hollywood (ouch!) wax every 6 weeks or so and have maintained that whilst pregnant - am 22 weeks and they're completely safe and fine. I haven't found it anymore painful since being pregnant, althought I hear for some people it is more painful.

If you struggle with pain I would suggest using brazilian hot wax, much less painful than wax strips!!

Brangelina · 31/10/2007 12:32

I had a rather drastic bikini wax just before my due date and yes it was stingingly painful but much better that some nurse fannying around with a blunt razor. And no, it's nothing like childbirth (or contractions in my case as I had an emergency cs).

I wouldn't go with a hair removal cream mainly because, if you're like I was, you won't be able to see where you put it and end up with unsightly tufts.

allgonebellyup · 31/10/2007 12:32

erm.. i would saying waxing is about 1 fiftieth of the pain of giving birth. Hope that helps!

allgonebellyup · 31/10/2007 12:33

i would say

Brangelina · 31/10/2007 12:33

Oooh, brave Clapham! I've always wanted a hollywwod but never quite had the courage.

LadySanders · 31/10/2007 12:38

ooh what's a hollywood? i had half a bikini wax about 6 years ago and thought it was unbearable so made her stop. am also 26 weeks preg and the other day attempted to shave bikini line in shower (as i usually do) without remotely being able to see around bump. walked into bedroom naked and attempted to look alluring, dp laughed (a lot) and said i might want to look in mirror as was rather wonky. very wonky, in fact. and tufty where i'd missed bits. joy.

crokky · 31/10/2007 12:44

but you can have a lot of drugs whilst giving birth

macdoodle · 31/10/2007 15:38

I have still been having my regular hollywoods (thats all bare no hair at all ladys)....but not for a while now as am nearly 33 weeks so waiting till a bot closer to due date...I think it does hurt more when pregnant TBH ...baby does eeem to wake up and move about a fair but probably the adrenaline

MrsBadger · 31/10/2007 15:59

perfectly safe
I had a wax and pedicure the day before dd was born (in my defence she was a week early).

dontwanttogetoutofbed · 31/10/2007 16:08

me too brazilian waxing right up to my due dates with both. no problems. anyways, whats a little pain in the face of a nice aesthetic do down there
i once tried a hollywood but found it frightful

TJuice · 31/10/2007 19:57

just tell them to go easy on you. i had a vicious one and my skin went blue. more bloody in that area apparently.

neuroticlady · 01/11/2007 11:17

Thanks girls. Appointment booked for tomorrow! Don't think I'll be going the Hollywood route just yet, though .

go for brazillian /hollywood......gives you a chance to practice breathing technique

neuroticlady · 02/11/2007 10:48

All done! Wow, is that better. And yes I did practice my breathing technique slim22

And guess what... I didn't find it as painful as normal.

Thanks for making me realise I was being silly to not have a tidy up. Baby actually seemed to quite like it and went all quiet!
