Should I get another flu jab?

Not sure whether to get a second flu jab this year! Got first privately at some point in September, unfortunately didn't record the date. I also conceived in September- last menstrual period was 13th September. So likely had jab before conception.

I know I'm protected so that's not an issue but I think the baby is only protected through passive immunity if you have the jab whilst pregnant? My first baby had flu at 12 months and it was fairly unpleasant (and he gave it to me), so i don't particularly want a 6 month old to get it.

Internet search seems to suggest having two jabs in a year is safe.

Is it worth having another one whilst pregnant?

Alternatively I will be getting the flu jab next winter- assuming baby is breastfeeding would that provide any immunity (from me having been jabbed) - I assume it would not be equivalent to passive immunity through placenta. ?

The recommendation to have the flu vaccine whilst pregnant is to protect you, not for the benefit of the baby. Yes if you're breastfeeding baby they will get antibodies through your breast milk. I would wait personally

I've never heard of having two flu jabs but I see no reason why you would have two.

Personally I'd be happy if I'd have had it before being pregnant as I worried about the risk of having it during early pregnancy.

Surely this is something to discuss with your doctor though.

I dont think you need a second one as the flu jab is to protect you.. but if you think you do I'd check with your midwife or GP.

Passive protection would only offer baby some immunity for the 1st few months after birth. Antibodies can be passed through breast milk too.
You are protected with current one so I don't think you need another, you could ask the midwives or nurses at GP surgery to see if they think it's worth having another.

Ok I am leaning towards not getting one. I need to book my whooping cough jab and just wondered if I should get another flu one at the same time, to (partly) protect the baby in its first winter next year.

I don't think gp or midwife will say 'yes get another jab!', not because it's dangerous but because they are precautionary by nature, so wanted to see views here...

They modify the flu jab each year so that it covers the 2 or 3 strains most likely to be circulating so there is no guarantee that the flu jab this year will cover your baby next winter.

I had my flu jab a few weeks before I got my positive test at my booking appointment (pre covid) my midwife offered me the flu jab I said I had already had this year's vaccine so she didn't give it me.

Hi there I had the flu jab in October and also ended up conceiving in October (on the exact date I got the jab!) I've asked my gp, my midwife and my consultant as well as the pharmacy I got the flu jab in should I need another one and all of them said nope im covered. Its for us not the baby. The whooping cough one is for the baby. Hth x
