Gallstones?

Disclaimer: I know no-one here can diagnose me, I've spoken to the midwife twice (I'm 23 weeks) and am going to call the GP when they open tomorrow morning, just looking for experiences!

On Thursday night I got this pain in my back on the right hand side, just in the middle, about where my lowest ribs are. It suddenly came on out of nowhere and didn't feel muscular, like I don't think I pulled anything. The pain is somewhere between sharp and dull, and it's difficult for me to quantify pain as I always feel like "well if I chopped my hand off it would be worse" or whatever but it is very sore, for the rest of the evening I couldn't settle at all as no position I could sit in eased it at all and I barely slept that night with it either.

Since then it has sort of been a bit of an ebb and flow. It hasn't ever fully gone away, but it has only once been as bad again as it was the first time - both of the 'peaks' I had of pain have had me sort of squatting by the bed as if I were already in labour as that straight backed forward leaning position helped very slightly. I had some slight nausea from the pain during the peaks as well but nausea is not uncommon for me in pregnancy so it's hard to know if that's a symptom or not. I'm not really a crier but I've been on the brink of tears a few times with the pain.

I've tried resting it, not resting it (going on a walk to see if it loosened it up or something), gently stretching it, using a hot water bottle, taking paracetamol, but none of these really have an effect, it seems to just come and go independently of what I do. I try to kind of knead it with my knuckle the way you would a tense muscle but it feels too deep, I can't quite reach it. It is a little worse when standing and walking, and it hurts more sharply if I take a deep breath or, weirdly, if I lift my leg on the right side (the pain doesn't shoot down my leg, just flares in the original area).

Anyway, I know I am using Dr Google when I shouldn't be, but when you're in pain all day with nothing else to do, it's hard to resist trying to puzzle it out! I know pregnancy is a risk factor for gallstones, as is rapid weight loss, which I have experienced due to the nausea. Probably also worth mentioning that the few foods I can actually eat include chocolate cereal, which is obviously high in fat, and I eat a lot of it. I also drink a lot of whole fat milk. They are my 'safe' foods but I'm also trying desperately to get a little of the weight I've lost back on! I mention these as I know that high fat foods can be a contributor to a GB attack.

It just hurts a lot and nothing is helping and, like I said, I am seeking professional advice as well but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone had had gallstones and whether the symptoms sounded similar.

I had the same I was in agony on the right side just under my ribs radiating to my groin , I couldnt bear the pain any more and went to out of hours, urine test done I had a lot of blood in my urine and was sent to hospital I was sent home with antibiotics for a uti which did work , but doctors were unsure if I had gallstones or a uti and touch wood I havnt had a flare up again yet . I would definitely ring the doctors x

I was diagnosed with gall stones before getting pregnant . The pain I had was in my back and under my ribs . Sometimes it would be a dull ache , sometimes more intense and constant . Gp insisted it was bad indigestion but I knew it was something else . Only way you can get it confirmed is with a scan . All I can advise is to try your hardest not to eat fatty foods and speak to your dr xxx

Oh my goodness I so could have written this! I’m 22+2 and have had the exact same experience as you. I ended up phoning GP a week ago and I have an ultrasound of my gallbladder tomorrow afternoon - I’ll keep you posted with how it goes x

I had a gall stone attack and ended up in a&e when I was 24 weeks pregnant with my first baby in 2016. It wasn’t until 3 weeks postnatally I was doubled up in pain on the bathroom floor unable to breathe due to the pain you describe (right hand side, under my ribs) the only way I could explain it it was as if someone was stood behind me and crushing me with their hands (sorry this does sound rather dramatic!) it was agony. I was blue lighted to a&e but bloods etc appeared normal and was sent home. It happened another two times before I ended up with a scan which revealed my gall bladder had completely collapsed. I had surgery to remove it 6 weeks postnatally and never get any pain. Fatty foods used to trigger attacks so try and stick to low fat if you can, I know it’s hard in pregnancy with cravings at the best of times. Take care and wishing you well.

@Funmum2020 The midwife did say she thought it probably wasn't a UTI as I've not had any other symptoms but I'm calling the GP in the morning to get a test anyway!

@Reeva1988 Yes that's what it's like, sometimes a bit more in the background and sometimes quite intense, but it hasn't gone away since it started!

@Floopyandtired I'm sorry you're in pain, but yes, please do let me know how it goes! I'll also update once I've spoken to the doctor tomorrow.

@HR313 My goodness, that sounds so scary! I'm not at the point of collapsing on the floor yet, thankfully, although in saying that when it first came on and was really bad I did stumble through to where my husband was and then just sort of sit down on the floor because I was in so much pain I didn't know what to do with myself! It sounds so dramatic saying that but it was awful. I'm having a rough time with food all round (lots of nausea, strong food aversions and also coeliac disease) and there are very few things I'm able to eat, and most of what I can actually have is pretty high in fat.... it's not really avoidable for me as I'd be eating nothing at all otherwise :( We'll see what the doctor says.

Thank you everyone for responding.

Just an update - slept terribly last night, was up and down til after 1.30am and then the pain woke me at 5am. Decided to phone NHS 24 at that point, but ultimately as it's hard for me to get to the out of hours on my own, especially at that time, I decided I'd leave it a few hours and just call my own GP as planned.

Managed to get an appointment and she did the strip test thing, definitely no infection. She poked and prodded a bit (she was actually very thorough and gentle though) and said it really does seem to be a muscle issue. I was pretty surprised as to be honest I was half prepared to have her cart me off to the hospital there and then for some horrible infection, just with how much pain I've been in. However, obviously it's a relief that there's no issue that could affect the baby. I forgot to ask if it can be caused by stress, but I have been quite stressed lately (who hasn't?) so I wouldn't be surprised if that's a factor. She did give me some cocodamol which I don't want to take much of but I plan to have before bed tonight so I can hopefully at least get some sleep. I'm still pretty surprised that it's "only" muscle spasms but obviously glad it's not more serious. Just gonna keep resting, using heat on it etc and hope it eases off soon.
