Polyhydramnios

Hi all
Has anyone been told on examination they may have polyhydramnios and referred for a growth scan?
Never had this with DS1 but went in with reduced movements this afternoon and MW said she could feel too much fluid.
Really worried and just wondered if anyone else has had this or a MW thought they did and then turned out to be ok?

Hi, i had this with my daughter (now 3 years old) i had a fair few growth scans as my fluid was off the charts.. literally however it just ‘disappeared’ at around 38 weeks. Not sure how or what happened there. Anyway mostly i just wanted to say the fact they have picked up on it is great as now you will be monitored more... try not to worry too much. 😊

I had it with our 2nd quite bad, slightly better with 3rd and one of our twins had it too.

It didn't cause any issues at all.

mumandcub · 31/01/2021 17:48

Thanks both, that’s reassuring. I had diabetes with DS1 so think it may be related to that even though they haven’t picked GD up this time round

I had this with my DS (he's 3 months now), my levels were very high and they actually considered bringing my c section forward. My scan a week later showed almost normal levels so it seemed to resolve itself.
When DS was born he needed an NG tube in and out as he had a lot of mucous due to the excess waters. I was warned this might be the case before hand. After that he was absolutely fine & fed perfectly. Smile

mumandcub · 31/01/2021 18:17

Oh bless him @Changeisconstant did you have to stay in hospital long? Did he get to stay on postnatal with you?

I had this with my youngest. She is 9 now though. It was picked up on scans and I just had extra observations. But when my waters went it was like Niagra falls, it just kept going and going 😁.
I was told though if they went at home to get down on all fours and phone an ambulance as a emergency, just incase.

Yes this got detected with my third baby at around 38 weeks when I went for a scan. I remember they were saying he was going to be a giant baby, talk of diabetes etc, induction, possible c - section. Scared the living daylights out of me. He eventually came on time (or thereabouts... can’t quite remember??) with no complications and he was 8lb 7 or something so not particularly big. Hopefully nothing to worry about OP.

HarrietM87 · 31/01/2021 18:54

I had mild polyhydramnios with DC2. I went in for reduced movements at 35 weeks and it showed up on a scan, and was probably the reason for the reduced movements. Baby also measured huge so they suspected GD. My GTT was borderline so they treated me as if I did have it. I monitored sugars for the last few weeks of pregnancy and never got a high so who knows. Anyway baby born on due date completely healthy. Most of the time they don’t know the cause.

Catlady21 · 31/01/2021 18:56

I've just been diagnosed with this too @30 weeks. GD has been ruled out as a cause. I've had blood taken to check for any infections and have been referred to fetal medicine too for an in depth scan. Didn't have this in my previous pregnancies so and I'm trying not to worry too much!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 31/01/2021 18:59

I had it with ds2. I was admitted at 37 weeks as he was a transverse lie, and had a C section at 39 weeks.

He was 10lbs at birth but dropped to 8.5 within 2 days. He went to NICU but was fine.

Chelyanne · 31/01/2021 19:00

The funny thing for ours is
The 3 that had high fluid levels all have the same blood group as my husband. Our 2 others that have the same blood group as me didn't have the condition. Odd coincidence or genetic, who knows.

Amelia891 · 31/01/2021 20:56

I had this with my first daughter, diagnosed around 34 weeks. Had quite a few extra growth scans and was told they didn’t want me to go over my due date but luckily I went into labour naturally the day my induction was planned. I was measuring 2 weeks ahead due to all the fluid and when my waters broke I pretty much flooded the room, but absolutely no problems or complications, and a perfectly healthy 8lb 4 baby girl :)

Thanks all, I feel a bit more reassured now!! Did anyone go on to have a water birth? I couldn’t have one with DS1 because of GD and I really hoped I could have one this time around...

It is usually clinically not significant- can indicate kidney issues in a small percentage, which they will check. Also can juts be one of those things and usually only requires extra scans to keep checking the level.

HarrietM87 · 01/02/2021 07:52

If you had GD with your first baby then you almost certainly have it again now, which would explain the polyhydramnios. How many weeks are you? Have you had the GTT?

I had a waterbirth with polyhydramnios (and borderline GD).

mumandcub · 01/02/2021 08:12

I’ve had 3 GTTs and a HBAC, I’m 31 weeks and all tests were normal for now. Agree it could be a sign of it but all tests have been passed so far and my last one was only 2 weeks ago.

The condition flags you as high risk, my hospital said I couldn't have one if high risk. It does vary by trust though so you'll have to ask.
meltedgalaxy · 01/02/2021 09:11

I had this with my son but it wasn't discovered until during my C-Section, they knew baby was big and was monitoring his growth.

He was 10lb 1 a week early, very bloated and my bump was ridiculously big. Even though growth scans said my baby was big, my midwife insisted "he feels like a 6lber" so I don't know how it was missed.

mumandcub · 01/02/2021 09:17

Wow @meltedgalaxy how did they guesstimate so differently 🙈
I honestly thought too much fluid was really rare as that’s what it said online but clearly it’s not as uncommon as I thought which is a relief.

@Chelyanne I would say my trust would also say no to a water birth due to high risk even though my anaesthetist told me it would be best for me as I can’t take the harder pain relief due to allergies to opioids. Will double check again with MW tomorrow though.

@mumandcub my midwife was honestly rubbish, the said the Polyhydraminos was moderate-severe too, so I was shocked they didn't pick it up. I didn't have GD but I had a huge baby, so I'm not sure why. They did with this pregnancy I'll have extra scans to monitor because I'll likely have it again

Changeisconstant · 03/02/2021 12:06

@mumandcub sorry only just seen your reply as I'd been logged out for some reason!

No we didn't stay any longer than normal for a c section (I was home the following evening so in for just over 24 hours post section). The nurse came down from NICU to do it in recover about 10 minutes after we went into recovery, it was all done very quickly!
