Paneer?

Quick one I hope - anyone know if paneer used by Indian takeaways will be pasteurised or unpasteurised? Stupidly ate a lukewarm curry last night (tbh I like it lukewarm as pregnancy sickness makes my throat too sore for hot food!) and now being lectured that this is a listeria risk because it means I won't know if it wasn't ever hot enough to be free of bacteria if unpasteurised? Will definitely nuke and deal with any throat pain in future!

You'll be fine. I chose to follow the French advice a couple of times when my cheese cravings got too strong and my kids are healthy.

The French advice isn't any different to the British advice (except for being slightly stricter on ready-grated cheese) but paneer is fine.

Who is lecturing you?!

I'm unsure why I believed the French allow unpasteurized cheese in pregnancy. Sorry for the incorrect information.

It can be confusing Smile

Unpasteurised hard cheese like Stilton is fine, but pasteurised mould-ripened cheese like Brie is advised against. It causes a lot of confusion!

Paneer. Listeria? No. Just no. Who is lecturing you?

Thanks all. And a pregnant colleague... on Friday it was about spinach and the listeria risk there Hmm... oh and last week it was hummus. All of these are things I'd been eating a lot of previously without much thought (inc paneer but usually cooked!).

Originally thought it would be helpful to know someone else pregnant in real life but instead of reassuring me it feels like she's pointing out everything I'm doing wrong Sad

Daft woman! Time to stop talking to her about food (and possibly everything else...).

Luckyelephant1 · 31/01/2021 13:00

I'm sure its fine. Even if it wasn't hot when you ate it, it's been cooked through and would have been hot at some point.

I'm FTM too and during the first few weeks I was so terrified I barely ate any cheese full stop. I then finally forced myself to use common sense and am basically following NHS advice and only Googling if I really have to.

I think I saw your bagged salad post or a similar one recently and I'm just being extra careful with thoroughly washing everything even if it says already washed. If I didn't eat any bagged greens I'd not be eating any greens at all really and a lot of the time salads are the only healthy thing I actually want to eat. Again the NHS advice doesn't even mention avoiding it, it just says wash all fruit end veg so that's what I do.

May need to stage an intervention as our work social calls seem to revolve around food plans...or maybe I just need to start fibbing and only quote things from her definitely approved list Wink But yes she's got to me multiple times in the last couple of weeks now and then I really want to know if she's got a valid point or not!

I go off meat when pregnant so have eaten a lot of paneer curry as an alternative.

Just read the NHS website it's really clear.

Sceptre86 · 31/01/2021 14:03

Stop listening to her. Go to the nhs website for the most updated advice. I can understand possible confusion about paneer. Last week however someone was asking if it is OK to eat spicy food whilst pregnant.Confused Do women from places like India or Mexico ( where spicy food is the norm) not get pregnant?

Arm yourself with a list from the nhs website and tell her you will be eating what you want so she can back off. Best of luck to you.

Hummous and Ryvita was all I could stomach during my first trimester, I ate tons of it. I have had issues with fertility and high risk of miscarriage but everything was fine. My baby boy is now a thriving 10 week old.

Also ate lots of paneer, I'm indian and my mum ate tons when pregnant with me and my siblings - there is no issue. Also once it's been cooked once, any bacteria would be dealt with.

You'll be fine. The risks are tiny. I have never heard of anyone ever getting listeriosis. It must be such a rare illness
