Almost fainted in Costco

So today I almost passed out in Costco! Needed some help and it was a rather embarrassing and scary situation.

I'm 11 weeks pregnant, I had what I think was a low blood sugar. This was 12pm, I had my breakfast around 9am and was actually queuing for food when I started feeling sweaty, weak and my eyes went blurry to the extent of not being able to see and before I knew it was being helped to a chair! I had my son with my, luckily his dad was at customer service so he came straight over to help.

Has this ever happened to anyone before?

I did have something similar when carrying my DS, this lasted all through my pregnancy. I do eat a balanced diet and I've been snacking little and often and drink plenty of water

Anyone have any suggestions how to ease or avoid feeling like this?

Quite anxious as I'm starting 12 hour shifts on a hospital ward next month and can't stop what I'm doing frequently to eat but I'm scared of fainting

I would keep a food journal and then speak to the GP. Your body just might not be dealing as well with blood sugar insulin release balance. They should be able to run some tests and offer dietary changes or meds to help.

I'm 11wks too. I've never had any incidents of fainting in any pregnancy so no experience to share. I've had GTT's in my last 3 pregnancies, at those you I see a few women passing out or becoming faint.

I went faint when I was getting my nails done at about 13 weeks. I ended up having to have a lie down on the floor at the nail salon 😬 It's only happened once, I don't know if they had moved into the wrong place but it just came over me all of a sudden, but I've been fine ever since!

This happened to me in all my pregnancies. It was apparently caused by low blood pressure. The good news was that it stopped pretty much after the first trimester in each case.

I hope it stops soon! I'll keep a food diary and speak to my midwife, terrified of it happening at work or whilst driving or alone with my son

Mine tended to only happen when I was standing still for a while - generally on the tube on my way to work. So, hopefully you won’t be affected when driving or alone with your son.

Something similar happened to me when I was about 14 weeks pregnant. I was out for a walk with DH and we saw a family member and stopped to talk for about 15/20 mins. Whilst we stood talking I could feeling my eyesight getting fuzzier and my hearing went like I was underwater and started to feel a bit wobbly. I was told it was because of the increased blood flow to my uterus that you get in pregnancy and when you stand in the same place for too long without moving the blood flow isn't getting to everywhere in your body. Not sure how true it was but I made sure to not stand up for too long without moving like walking etc again and didn't have any further issues.

I suffered with low blood sugar when pregnant. I've always had what I call 'wobblies' when I've gone too long without eating but these episodes came on much quicker and more severe when pregnant. I would get sweaty, weak, shakey and a fuzzy head. I kept glucose tabs in my handbag to take when I felt one coming on and didn't have food on me. Might be worth having some on hand just in case? But definitely speak to the Dr/midwife if it happens again just to be sure.

I never had morning sickness in either of my pregnancies but for some reason the marks and Spencer food hall used to make me want to hurl 🤢 and I'd get very hot abs uncomfortable in there

HappyThursdays · 31/01/2021 06:07

I had it throughout both my pregnancies too so I feel for you! I'm not sure how much you can do for low blood pressure in pregnancy other than making sure you don't stand for long time periods - I was also advised to wear support socks, you must make sure you are drinking enough water because being dehydrated can really worsen this in pregnancy and obviously it's not good for you or baby either and have a packet of crisps/something salty as a snack.

I used to faint on public transport all the time - it was so embarrassing! But you do get that feeling that it's about to happen!

Keeping hydrated I found the most important thing and I think the compression socks did help.

I'm 19 weeks and this has been happening to me.

I went to my GP - I had blood tests - I have low BP, low iron, low B12 & folic acid
They've since put me on tablets and I feel a lot better; haven't had any more fainting episodes; I ended up on the floor with someone talking to me as I was coming round previously Blush

This kept happening to me in a certain supermarket, I stopped going there after the third time, it never happened anywhere else. The staff reckoned it was the lighting.

Roselilly36 · 31/01/2021 06:51

It’s scary, it happened to me in Sainsbury’s one lunchtime, left the office, to get a sandwich, came over really faint, the lovely staff were really kind and got me a chair & a glass of water, and asked if I wanted them to call an ambulance, it was so embarrassing. Never forgotten it.

It’s not a pleasant experience but not uncommon in pregnancy, especially around the second trimester when your blood pressure can really drop. My BP is low at the best of times, but during pregnancy drops through the floor. I’ve had several embarrassing fainty moments including on a train when I was too shy to ask for a seat (never made that mistake again) and having to be propped up by a colleague at a conference! The advice I’ve had is just to keep hydrated and to avoid standing up too quickly. I also generally carried snacks with me too. Hope you feel better.
