Pregnancy weight gain?

Hi all,

I'm 33 weeks with DC2 and am a bit concerned I've not gained enough- just out of curiosity- how much weight has/did anyone else gain?

I had a healthy BMI to start with and have gained 15 pounds (or 9kg)- but all of this was in the first two trimesters. My weight has stayed the same for the past 7 weeks.

Bump is measuring on track at 50th percentile.

I don’t think it matters if the bump is measuring correctly. Well, I hope so as I’ve only put on a kilo! All scans have been fine and there have been no concerns from the professionals.

intheshallows · 29/01/2021 09:24

Gosh- how many weeks are you??

Are you eating more? You won't gain weight if you're eating normally but the baby will still be growing and getting what it needs!

sundowners · 29/01/2021 11:02

10 kg is what I'm trying to aim for putting on this whole pregnancy as ate all the pies with DS1 and found it really hard to loose. So your weight gain sounds fine. Im 21 weeks & have put on 6kg already (so doubt I'll manage to stick to the 10kg!)

intheshallows · 29/01/2021 11:31

No not really eating more. And sorry just realised I did a typo earlier, it's 7kg I've gained so far, not 9

I’ve put on a stone from booking appointment and now 36 weeks. Not sure how much we are supposed to gain in all honesty but baby seems to have grown as expected

luxxlisbon · 29/01/2021 12:41

If you aren't eating more then you aren't really going to gain weight, I'm not sure why that surprises you.
At this stage you should be eating a little more than normal to support your body and the growth of the baby.

You don't need to 'eat for two' but you should be upping your food intake slightly to include an extra snack or two a day.

sundowners · 29/01/2021 12:46

I’d say if it’s 7 kgs you’ve put on and that hasn’t changed in 2 months, yes you should be eating more.

3rdtimemomma · 29/01/2021 12:46

I'm 26 weeks tomorrow and have put on 14lbs. I don't look any different other than the bump and baby is fine and healthy and measuring perfect for dates.

I wouldn't focus too much on "how much " you should put on. Iv just tried to eat as I normally would and have a good balanced diet.

Unless your midwife is concerned I wouldn't be 😊

I think sometimes it's easy to put excessive unnecessary weight on with the "eating for 2" but I think it's literally only meant to be maybe 3rd trimester and the additional equates to like a slice of bread ☺️

Honestly wouldn't worry and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy ☺️

intheshallows · 29/01/2021 12:52

Thanks everyone.

And to the pp who asked why I didn't understand I wasn't gaining weight if I'm not eating more- my understanding is that the baby will be gaining weight steadily at this point (nearly a pound a week) and blood volume etc should be increasing as well- which is where I thought the weight gain should be coming from, even if just eating normally, not necessarily'more'

I'm not sure why you think you need to put so much weight on, as long as you're healthy then you're fine.
My friend put on over 4st in pregnancy. I'm 38wks and weigh exactly the same as I did pre-pregnancy so have gained nothing, no sickness either, I've had GD so just ate sensibly. Baby is tracking 50th centile.

Chelyanne · 29/01/2021 12:57

You need to add in some extra good quality calories to gain weight. Baby will be gaining weight but if you are not consuming enough calories you will be burning any fat you have and also break down muscle for fuel. If you were overweight pre-pregnancy then not adding extra calories will likely do no harm but if you were classed as a healthy BMI you do risk becoming a bit too lean. Also fat burning produces keytones which are not good in large quantities during pregnancy. Something as simple as an extra chicken breast a day or something of similar nutritional value will be good.

intheshallows · 29/01/2021 13:04

An extra chicken breast or something is a good idea!

And I don't think 7kg is putting on 'so much weight' is it? I was asking here because I saw an online piece of advice saying women starting with healthy BMIs should gain 25-35 pounds-given that I've gained 15 and don't have long left I was a bit concerned!

OP posts:
Chelyanne · 29/01/2021 13:25

You've gained on the low side tbh.
Chicken breast is a good idea because of it being high protein, help your body rebuild any muscle it breaks down and perfect building blocks for baby too. I wouldn't worry too much unless you start to feel unwell with it. If you are eating lots of highly nutritious foods then baby will be getting all they need to grow well.

I gained 2.5st with our 3rd, 2st of that was off straight after the birth and the rest came off within a few weeks too. She was 9lb 10oz with polyhydramnios (high fluid levels) and I was overweight to start off anyway so needed to not gain to excess. I stopped weighing myself once I hit 2st gain with our twins which was around 6mth. I was 7lb heavier after birth than pre-pregnancy but again that came off quickly. My 1st 2 I got fat! Gained 4st with each of them, 2nd was bigger than our 3rd at birth but still I gain too much.

swishswashswoosh · 29/01/2021 13:28

I gained about 4kg in total in my first pregnancy. Overall I lost weight once the (9lb) baby arrived but actually found I was so hungry after that I went back to my pre-pregnancy weight after a couple of months pretty naturally. Once I was there the insatiable hunger seemed to stop. I wouldn't worry op, weight gain is as individual as personality!

SunnySideUp2020 · 29/01/2021 13:31

I know plenty of women who barely put on any weight, plenty who gained what's recommended and a few who went overboard and gained about 20kg. None of them had major issues.
What matters is what your midwife is advising.
7kg for 33 weeks is definitely not little weight gain and definitely not too much. If you find you aren't putting enough weight on as a personal preference, try the suggested extra chicken breast of portion of food.
But if your energy levels are good, your iron is good, your fundal measurements are good and baby HB is good then don't worry.
Every pregnancy/body/person is different.
Even BMI is not a clear indicator of health to start with. Some people are "obese" because they have lots of muscles and are athletes.
Some people are in the normal range but never have fresh foods in their diets and are just blobs of fat.

user159 · 29/01/2021 13:32

I put on 1.5stone and went to 42 weeks. Measured small throughout and had regular growth scans that all confirmed everything was ok. My DD weight 8lb exactly when she finally arrived. Some people just carry differently to others!

Chelyanne · 29/01/2021 13:34

Oh and when I say a chicken breast... I mean a good sized one of about 200g. That'll give you around 300kcal and a good 60g of lean protein. So many people don't get enough protein, I powerlift so I track my intake pretty well. Currently in the gym too lol.

intheshallows · 29/01/2021 13:51

Ok thanks all. I'll definitely mention it at my next midwife appointment anyway, but sounds like it's ok. To be honest I already eats loads of protein (over 100g) a day but an extra chicken breast won't hurt!

FolkyFoxFace · 29/01/2021 14:04

I've no idea if I've gained anything! I'm assuming I have because my collar bones aren't quite as prominent, but aside from the bump, I can still fit into all pre-pregnancy clothes.

I don't weigh myself to begin with, I'm just active and healthy. I didn't want yet another thing to worry about so asked my midwife if I needed to be checking. She said no, just eat healthily and make sure I'm getting enough of everything I need, but I don't need to weigh or count calories. Baby is growing well and is healthy, I'm feeling healthy and I eat when I'm hungry - same as before.

I don't think it's something to get caught up in if you don't want to/everything is healthy.

MotherWol · 29/01/2021 14:28

I'm 17 weeks and so far haven't gained anything since my booking in at 9 weeks, but I was overweight when I got pregnant (BMI 30), so the midwife advised to try to keep weight gain to a minimum. I suspect as I progress that will change but at the moment I'm not feeling much hungrier than normal so I'm just eating pretty much as normal.

Superscientist · 29/01/2021 14:45

You should only eat 200-300 more calories in the third trimester so it's not true that you only gain weight if you are eating more than usual.

I lost half a stone in the first trimester due to pregnancy sickness. I had regained this by about 18-20 weeks. My pregnancy sickness returned in my third trimester and I started to lose a small amount of weight again. I added an extra snack on days that I could manage it and that stopped the weight loss.
I finished pregnancy about a stone heavier than prepregnancy. I gained weight irregularly nothing for 3 weeks then 2-3lb the week after so I monitored my weight on a monthly basis.

RatherBeRiding · 29/01/2021 14:50

I'm fairly petite and so aimed to only gain the weight needed to account for baby, placenta etc. I exercised and ate normally during 2 pregnancies and only gained about a stone in total. About a week post-birth both times I was back to pre-pregnancy weight.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 29/01/2021 14:50

I’m 31 weeks and have gained a similar amount of weight.

Weight gain in pregnancy is not routinely monitored by the NHS because there isn’t a “correct” amount to gain.

If you’re not hungry, you’re a healthy BMI and bump measurement is fine, I wouldn’t try to force yourself to eat more.

Sexnotgender · 29/01/2021 17:44

I’m 29+6 and have gained 14lbs.
