Baby is breech - is something wrong with it? Worried

lemonlimesoda11 · 28/01/2021 08:29

Hi I am booked in for a c-sec next week. The more I read about c-sec for breech babies online, the more I see things about the possible causes of the baby being breech. Scary stats I've seen is 1 in 10 may have neurological issues.

This article has particularly freaked me out - parenting.firstcry.com/articles/common-breech-baby-birth-defects/

I know, I know step away from Google... first time hormonal mum here.

I have a high anterior placenta so I actually wondered whether that might have blocked the baby from turning/moving. The head has more or less been in the same place since 33 weeks.

Any success stories, reassurance or thoughts welcome! Thanks in advance

I had a breech baby first time and a ‘right way up’ but squashed in baby second time. Think I’ve just got a small uterus that they get stuck in! First baby was totally fine except needed treatment for hip displasia for a few months. Second baby also looked a bit wonky for a few weeks.

I expect your baby is absolutely fine Smile

DoneAdulting · 28/01/2021 08:39

I had a breech baby and he is completely fine. He's 8 now. I'm tiny and I think he just didn't have room to turn.

lemonlimesoda11 · 28/01/2021 08:48

I am not sure if either of you had a c-sec, but did the consultants ever say anything to you about why breech post-surgery? Just wondering if as you say once they get in there they see a small uterus or short cord etc and it makes more sense? I know of course it could just be a totally random thing!

DD2 wasn't breech she was sideways! Would move out of transverse no matter what I tried. She's a bright active tween now but still stubborn Grin

Doza · 28/01/2021 08:56

Sorry should say wouldn't move. Had no option but csection, they never mentioned a reason what it might have happened though.

TwinMum89 · 28/01/2021 09:01

I had twins and both were breech from around 24 weeks. They never turned. Born by c section at 36+5. Both now perfectly healthy at 18 months and meeting all of their milestones.

Chelyanne · 28/01/2021 09:03

There will not be anything like that. Abreech baby is just one of those things. You'll be fine if you stop googling and go with the flow.

The lower of our twins turned breech somewhere between 32 & 36 weeks, the consultant was amazed she'd managed it in the space she had. I'd been told at 32 weeks that I could go natural after her low lying placenta had moved enough. Just threw a spanner in the works but worked out perfectly fine. My elective section was relaxed and other than some heavy blood loss went well. Both girlshad their hips scanned when they got a bit older and both perfect. They're almost 6 now and intelligent little treasures.

I was breech and there's nothing wrong with me! Back in those days though they made women have a vagina birth with a breech baby, my poor mum!

My dc was breech and I had a nice calm planned C sec. No one implied at any time that she was breech because there was something wrong with her. It was just seen as one of those things. No one tried to explain why she was breech afterwards either.

Don't worry

Thesearmsofmine · 28/01/2021 09:09

My first was an undiagnosed breech baby, he is 10 now and absolutely fine. My second turned himself around right up until he was born, it was amazing to watch from the outside! Nobody ever mentioned why it might be.

If by any chance your baby does had any issues then you will deal with them as they come. There is no point fretting about it right now.

MsMiaWallace · 28/01/2021 09:15

Had 2 breech babies. First undiagnosed. Was vaginal birth as too late....!!
It was full on but baby fine!

Last baby was breech & had elcs as didn't want another vaginal breech birth, they still tried to get me to have one though!

Baby is fine now, but when born he had low blood platelets possibly down to 'birth trauma'. I don't think he was ready to be born.

I have a bicornuate uterus so they run out of room to turn!

WalkingMeAway · 28/01/2021 09:22

Again I’ve had a breech baby with no issues at all. Seems to just be one of those things ! No problems with c section either. Third pregnancy and I’ve learnt not too Google, you’ll always find the negative stories which will put your head in a spin !

Lonecatwithkitten · 28/01/2021 09:25

My Dad was breech, I was breech, my sister also breech and my daughter was breech till 37+3 then she went for an LOP presentation. All of us completely normal and successful in our chosen areas.
My family makes me wonder if there could be a genetic component.

Dollywilde · 28/01/2021 09:26

My sister and I - both breech and delivered by planned C-section, 1989 and 1991. Both met all our milestones, both went to Russell Group unis etc. Step away from Google!!

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 28/01/2021 09:26

Many years ago my sister and I were both breech. I was undiagnosed and born the wrong way up. Apparently this caused drama at the time but no long lasting ill effects. Dsis was turned in late pregnancy. We are both entirely neuro typical. I always assumed DM'a womb must have been an odd shape.

I had one but no one mentioned anything about why she was breech
Dowermouse · 28/01/2021 09:34

I've got several friends who were breech, and some who's babies were breach. No neuro issues. A mix of section and v births.
Ds was nearly breach, but turned. It was very drama, I thought I was going to poo myself. He was never in one stable position, when he was born the midwife said ours was the biggest placenta she'd ever seen, maybe he was dodging it all the time?

THNG5 · 28/01/2021 09:40

I was breech and there's nothing wrong with me! My second ds was breech. He's 3 and very "normal". I would stop googling if I were you. I've had 4 babies; 2 were head down, 1 breech and 1 transverse.

fruitpastille · 28/01/2021 09:43

Two of mine were breech. They are both completely fine and doing very well academically. I've sometimes thought ds might be a bit dyspraxic but never thought there was a connection.

Hi OP, please don't worry. I've looked at your link (I assess similar information for my job) and it's total nonsense. Their definition of 'birth defects' is wrong for a start. In your situation where the baby's breech position is known about and you are being monitored and offered appropriate delivery options, you really are not at increased risk. Take care
wimbler · 28/01/2021 10:51

also had a breech baby who is absolutely fine. Your baby will be referred for a routine hip scan at 6 weeks old (every breech baby is) to check for hip issues. Mine got the all clear. It was mentioned to me that the cord was on the shorter side which is why she might have been breech. other reasons might include a slightly misshapen uterus (which would probably have been diagnosed by now) but most of the time I think babies just get comfy and then get too big to turn by themselves. I tried the ECV but it wasn't successful so I accepted she was breech for a reason.

Try not to worry - my planned c-section was incredibly calm and positive. The theatre staff were incredible and made my husband and I feel really at ease. I'd never been admitted to hospital for anything before let alone major surgery so I was very nervous but I no need to be. Good luck, it's a magical day!

Thank you everyone for your comments and for bringing some rational thinking back to my mind this morning!

Breech Baby here too OP and he's absolutely fine! He was up and down and every way until 32 weeks but then he just decided not to flip anymore. I refused the ECV as I felt if he was unable to move for some reason (short cord, no space, stuck etc) then let him be! Had an ELCS and the surgeon said there was no reason for him not being able to turn so I guess he was just lazy haha! Hip scan at 8 weeks as PP mentioned and all was well! Good luck!! X

MaryShelley1818 · 28/01/2021 12:37

Baby could still move!
I'm 37+6 and baby has been breech at every scan - finally turned head down just a few days ago and head now engaged.

ivfbeenbusy · 28/01/2021 12:47

All the women in my family had breech babies - it's more likely due to uterus position/ your physical attributes than anything that's wrong with the baby
