Eating the wrong foods, dangerous?

Sounds so stupid saying it but I'm panicking..

I'm 9 weeks pregnant with my first child and I'm still learning the do's and dont's.
I ate a pizza last night with unpasteurised mozzarella with pepperoni and chorizo, which i now know is a massive nono.
About an hour after eating it I had some diarrhoea (sorry for tmi) and some bad stomach cramps, they have now passed and I am feeling better today.
I'm worrying about toxoplasmosis and I cant get out of my head I've done something wrong..

Do I need to see a dr or will it be ok?

TIA 💗

It is uncooked unpasteurised food you need to avoid. Once it is cooked it should be ok

NHS.UK has all the advice you need.

Smurf123 · 27/01/2021 11:23

Pepperoni and chorizo are both fine on pizza as you are cooking it

dementedpixie · 27/01/2021 11:23

You have cooked it on pizza so its fine to eat.

Check the nhs site for info on foods safe to eat in pregnancy

Most things are ok to eat if they’ve been properly heated (with the exception of things like liver). Was everything piping hot? If so, I don’t think you need to worry.

Your digestive symptoms changes in pregnancy anyway so you may find it’s a lot easier to get an upset stomach anyway. I would have also thought if you had gotten ill from that, it would have taken longer to come out.

Chelyanne · 27/01/2021 11:29

If throughly cooked most things like that are fine. Hormone changes can cause loose bowels so try not to worry too much.

LindaEllen · 27/01/2021 11:44

It wouldn't have got all the way through your digestive system in an hour. Most of it would still be sitting in your stomach at that point. Whatever it was, it wasn't that.

Don't worry about it :). Worrying makes everything worse!

Thank you so much everyone!
Youve put my mind at ease, I know I'm overthinking but sometimes cant help it.

Just to add that blue cheese pizza has been a staple in our house as it's the only way I'm allowed my blue cheese fix :)

Topseyt · 27/01/2021 12:19

Presumably you cooked the pizza, so it is fine. The heat of the oven deals with it.

Look at the NHS website for current guidance.

My pregnancies were all a long time ago now as my youngest is now 18. I remember having a massive craving for peanuts in their skins and did eat them. Wild horses would not have stopped me, but they became a big no-no during my last pregnancy. There was no effect on any of my three DDs.

These things are risk factors to be aware of. Not something that is definitely going to happen.

dementedpixie · 27/01/2021 12:34

Peanuts are allowed in pregnancy and have been for years (my kids are 17 and 14). Most things are ok as long as they are cooked or in the case of cured meats, you can freeze them for a few days if eating them uncooked

The old advice about avoiding nuts could be the reason for the increase in allergies. There’s no advice about avoiding nuts now. They’re healthy.

Like others said check out the guidance as it goes into detail. Basically you just need to avoid food high in vitamin A like liver as vitamin A in high doses isn’t good for pregnancy. Basically everything else that’s not recommended isn’t because the food is bad but the risk factors are slightly higher. If you accidentally eat something like unpasteurised cheese or raw fish it’s still rare that you’d have a bad outcome. In Japan pregnant women still eat sushi.

Poppins2016 · 27/01/2021 14:48

The risk from eating food that you're not allowed is actually quite low (although the advice is given for good reason). I agree with the PP, the main thing for me is avoiding vitamin A.

Just to add, I find that pregnancy increases my sensitivity to dairy, I ate some pasta with mozzarella chunks the other day and it really didn't agree with me.

BlueberryPancake21 · 27/01/2021 14:53

NHS Wales specifically says cured meat is fine on pizza as it is cooked, as is cooked cheese. Absolutely nothing to worry about! Interestingly I'd relaxed a bit when I got to 3rd trimester as I thought the risks were highest early on but actually toxoplasmosis is a bigger risk in 3rd trimester than 1st and, while rare, most people who have it never know as it's often symptom free. It's still incredibly rare in pregnancy though! I always washed my veg but now I'm back to thoroughly scrubbing everything/freezing herbs to be on the safe side... I do hate chopping soggy coriander.

My midwife told me during my final pregnancy that peanuts should be avoided. That “baby” is the 18 year old now. I didn’t believe it and ignored the advice. They had been fine in both of my previous pregnancies and this one was no different.
dementedpixie · 27/01/2021 15:59

@NinaMimia Sushi is also ok in the UK as long as the fish was frozen beforehand although I think some farmed salmon is ok even if not frozen first.
