Firstly I've spoken to 111 doctor will be ringing me back within 2 hours. Baby is kicking away.
Anyone else had this? I feel fine in myself apart from constant heartburn
I vomited earlier and it had a spot of red in it
Now the vomit is completely black
I'm also taking aspirin everyday (consultant led) done some googling and apparently that can cause bleeding?
Just wondering if anyone has had this and what the outcome was?

Just you let you know @LizFlowers 150mg is now the recommended amount for preventing pre eclampsia and is usually very safe. This is the dose I'm on as recommended by my consultant.

EarlGreywithLemon · 27/01/2021 19:14

Please don’t worry if you end up having an endoscopy OP. I had one a few years ago, and I was terrified beforehand. But it was absolutely fine and over in a flash. I told my mother this when she was about to have one and was also terrified. She didn’t believe me, but she said afterwards it had been a doddle. Keeping everything crossed for you!

@Greybeardy

OP, hope you’re feeling better soon.

@LizFlowers am sure you’re meaning to be helpful and supportive but many places do indeed prescribe 150mg aspirin in pregnancy and I suspect the OPs prescription was based on the consultant’s experience and understanding of her whole history. (Endoscopy isn’t always done with sedation either - and the balance of risk and benefit in pregnancy may make the other options more appealing.).

I'm not questioning giving aspirin in pregnancy for possible pre-eclampsia, I posted a link to that earlier.

There are types of sedation that are safe during pregnancy. Our hope surely is that the op will not need one, it seems at the moment she is being treated conservatively.

LizFlowers · 27/01/2021 20:07

From memory (ex NHS worker), meperidine and/or midazolam are used for sedation when a patient is pregnant.

Teakind · 27/01/2021 21:32

Hi OP, I hope you are ok.

Please don't worry about an endoscopy. I've had a couple and they were fine.

I really hope you feel better soon.

Humpty11 · 27/01/2021 21:35

@Greybeardy I agree! I was advised 150mg of aspirin for previous pre eclampsia.

Endoscopy can be done under sedation but not sure if this includes in pregnancy, I’ve had one (when not pregnant) with just the throat spray and although it was uncomfortable it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

I hope you’re feeling better and get some answers soon!

Penny31 · 27/01/2021 21:37

Hope you are ok op. I had terrible heartburn when I was pregnant and vomited blood. 111 sent me to a and e where I was given omeprozol which sorted my heartburn out and I stopped being sick

Haggisfish · 27/01/2021 21:41

Hope you feel better soon op. I’ve had an endoscopy and it was ok-I was very anxious beforehand but a lovely nurse held my hand. Omeprazole is brilliant for all things stomach acid related too!

Greybeardy · 27/01/2021 21:45

@LizFlowers hi, you’re right of course, hopefully an OGD wouldn’t be needed. To clarify though, sedation is not the only option for endoscopy and while it may be the best way to have one, there are things relating to a) bleeding & b) pregnancy that might make either local or GA preferable - these things need deciding on a case by case basis and stating confidently that “That would be done under sedation” (quoting your words) isn’t 100% helpful. (DOI: current anaesthetist).

You did explicitly say 150mg was ‘double the dose’ (“Yes! I'm glad you've knocked the aspirin on the head. It was double the dose of that recommended”) and that is not currently true. A quick google search will reveal that NICE endorses 75-150mg and many Trust’s online patient information leaflets seem to confirm 150mg is standard. (The OUH doc you referenced is from 2015 with a 2018 review date - It may not be their most recent version). Hope that helps. Smile

Sounds like you may have a bleed in your Gi tract somewhere and the black vomit is possibly old blood. You said you take aspirin which is known to irritate the stomach lining and may have caused gastritis or an ulcer. The only way to determine this is via an endoscopy, if it is the treatment is a ppi (omeprazole). I’m an ex gastro nurse btw!
I’m sure you’ll get good advice from 111/your GP, but if you do start vomiting fresh blood, feel faint or pass out then go straight to a&e.
I hope you’re better soon

I hope you get sorted soon. Can I ask if it happened after taking an iron tablet? I once had black vomit while on iron.
Take care, and good luck.

CottonSock · 27/01/2021 22:22

Blimey. I hope you get some rest tonight

MeowPurrGrr · 27/01/2021 22:25

Just read that you went to hospital! Hope all is going ok, if you do need an endoscopy it’s a very quick procedure and often done without any sedation (of course I can only speak for my hospital here) and most patients tolerated it very well. At worst, if there is a ulcer that needs treating a very small clip will be used to help heal it (you feel this and it will eventually pass out without you knowing!). The nurses are trained very well in keeping you calm and comfortable.

Ahhh i was meant to write ... you DONT feel it! I need to go to bed lol!

timeforanother1 · 27/01/2021 22:37

You're in the best place.

Get well soon.

SheeshazAZ09 · 27/01/2021 22:44

My mother was told to take aspirin daily as a precautionary measure by an idiot medic and ended up going to A&E twice with unstoppable nose bleeds. She also had a bleed in the stomach. No one advised her to stop taking the damn aspirin so we encouraged her to do some reading and she came off them herself. She never had a problem of this sort again.

No not on iron tablets but I know they can turn your poo very black so maybe it's the same with vomit? 🤔
