i have about five shopping websites open in different browsers and am just moments away from spending the best part of a hundred and fifty pounds on the most wonderful gorgeous baby clothes.

we are getting all our baby kit (car seat, high chair, travel system, sling, moses basket ) second hand. AND we can get lots of the most basic baby clothes second hand too.... AND I'm being really good and spreading my spends mainly beyong newbord sizing (going up to 6 month stuff mainly) AND i got a bonus from work, but technically i really shouldn't be spending any money BUT (final but!!) i want to buy this stuff sooooo much

let me! say it's ok
stop me! tell me it's not

ahhhh!!!

put it in a bank account for your child

spookthief · 29/10/2007 23:31

STOP!!!! You will get so many clothes as presents. You'll end up with drawers full of unworn garments with tags...

Pick one lovely thing only. One only I tell you!!

chocolateteapot · 29/10/2007 23:32

It is a complete waste of money. Baby grows are so much easier anyway and they grow out of it really quickly. And other people buy you outfits anyway. And if it is like my DS the baby might be so long that it won't actually ever fit into some of the stuff. Will that do ?!

Browny · 29/10/2007 23:33

tyaca, go on, click on them and add to your basket, why not? You've done really well arranging to get most of the expensive items second hand, if you can afford the clothes, go for it - the best thing about waiting for a baby to be born is buying all those lovely little clothes and imagining your baby wearing them .

DaisyWhoooo · 29/10/2007 23:33

When your baby is 18 would you rather he/she says 'thanks for the lovely baby clothes' or 'thanks for the £150 (plus 18 years of interest) that will come in really useful for university'? OK, the second one is probably wishful thinking for an 18 year old, but hopefully you get the point!

OMGhelp · 29/10/2007 23:39

DON'T DO IT. Go to Primark and buy some of their lovely stuff for a fraction of the cost. And know that when they grow out of it after only two washes, that you didn't break the bank. If you HAVE to buy something special, buy it for when they are more active and awake so that people can apprieciate it more, whats the use of buying that beauitifull outfit and nobody ever see it because its cold out and you would rather keep your baby warm.

ScaryScaryNight · 29/10/2007 23:44

Stop.

I gave 7 big card board boxes with baby clothes size 0-3 and 3-6 months to my SureStart healtvisitor to hand out on her descretion. You will get TONS of clothes as gifts.

All you really need are a few vests, sleepsuits and a set of outdoor clothing (depending on when baby is due, summer or winter). I understand your NEED to buy something new and gorgeous for your baby, but if you must, take yourself to your nearest H&M, they have gorgeous stuff, and buy just a few little items.

tyaca · 29/10/2007 23:54

!! the voices of mumsnet reason

you always see those baby bundles on ebay in which a third of the stuff still has tags on

re the amount of stuff friends and family will buy - was discussing with DH and are thinking of assigning different people different ages groups to get round the influx of newborn stuff... so my mum gets 3-6 months, his mum gets 6-12 etc etc. what do you reckon? still, i'm v picky , and short of being uber cheeky and sending them links (and depriving them of the fun of choosing) don't know what to do..

... oh but yes i do...

going to take a look at my bank account details online, then take a look at the long unopened letter from the inland revenue that's in the kitchen and SCARE myself into not buying now.

THEN i'm going to start my millionenth baby spreadsheet and copy details of what i want into that, so that maybe i can buy them later

only 21 wks, so should really really hold on a spread the fun over the next year...

out of curiousity - a question for the wise who've already had babies. I'm worried about buying stuff she won;t wear much. just how much wear would i get out of half a dozen play suits/ onesies aged - say - 0-6 months? surely she would get to wear them a bit? (NOT trying to get you to justify my spends, def not going to press all those click button that are calling out to me tonight), just wondering

thanks all
x

ok - here's what i'm going to do

I kept my baby in pyjama style clothing the first few weeks. I stayed away from clothing with buttons in the BACK, it is a lot trickier to change baby when you have to keep turning over, etc, rather than let the baby lay on the back when doing buttons up along the leg.

I dont know what you mean by playsuit, my first was born in april, he had some lovely velour one pieces from John Lewis, Mothercare and H&M. From age 3 months I dressed him in two pieces: trousers, shorts and a t shirt or long sleeved top. I was focusing entirely on softnes and ease of use, and without the need to iron.

I have boys. Friends of mine had girls, and they got lots of frilly dresses they hardly ever used.

Do you know what you are having?

And yes, do spread it out a little! I had promised myself NOT to buy anything till I was 32 weeks.....

tyaca · 30/10/2007 09:13

ty scary scary. it's a girl. i was doing quite well til i found that out!

i managed to hold out last night - it was just an impulse thing that i resisted. i DID however, transfer all the details of the stuff in my shopping baskets into a spreadsheet tho

waiting til 32 weeks is a good idea. the clothes will still be there, and if i really want some of them it may be a nice distraction from thrid trimester aches and immobilty.

ty all - you saved me from myself

You're welcome, and enjoy your pregnancy and shopping when the time comes!

beeper · 30/10/2007 11:22

I had my first baby in the land of no money. Where I bought very little and had things bought for me or given me and I was very grateful.

There are somethings I would not waste alot of money on again like a expensive cot or pram.

But this time we are more blessed with finances and I am having 'nice' maternity clothes, not just one dress picked out by mother. Also and if its a 'girl' way hey lookout monsoon baby I'm a coming.

The bottom line is being sensible if you can't afford it don't. But if you can then whats wrong in treating your baby to a few nice things.

Anyway most of the so called 'outfits' I got for my DS I would not have put a dog in.

OMGhelp · 30/10/2007 11:41

If I could have had another DC, I would have wishe d for a girl. They are so much more fun buying for, we all have a bit of princess in us, and dressing up our own baby in frills and fluff and ooh when they are 3 or 4 and at the precocious stage in their frilly dresses and lace topped ankle socks, it makes you proud.
Boy's, Nah. They can't even keep the top and bottom halves together. No fun at all.

ScaryScaryNight · 30/10/2007 11:49

OMGHelp, I am really saddend that you have such experienc and so little joy in buying for your little boy.

LaCerbiatta · 30/10/2007 11:57

You could buy evrything on the sales in January and spend half the money! (or is your abby due before then?)

OMGhelp · 30/10/2007 13:53

Well actually I did enjoy buying for both DS's, I loved the smart little suits, and matching oitfits, but I took a real delight in my daughter.
