High risk Down syndrome result

Hi everyone. I am posting for advice and if anyone has any positive stories. I had my 12 week NHS scan. The baby was perfect size for dates, visible nasal bone and very active. The NT measured 3mm. She told me this was within the normal range. My blood tests then came back as 1 in 25 risk for Down syndrome. My Papp-A level was 1.27 which she said is normal and my HCG was 131 which she also said was normal. I am 28 and this is my fourth baby. My three other babies were low risk so this is a bit of a shock for us. All three babies have been born premature at 32 weeks, 32 weeks and 35 weeks so we decided against invasive testing as I didn’t want to risk miscarriage or preterm labour later on. We decided to pay £450 for the harmony test last Friday and now it’s just a waiting game. We are so anxious does anybody have any experience with this?

Hey, I didn't want to read and run. I've no experience of being told I had a high "risk", but my wonderful 6 yr old daughter - who was low "risk", was born with Down's syndrome.

I'm pregnant with number 2 and had the NIPT so I could prepare and it came back low chance so all is well. It's an anxious wait though because you do worry about the "worst case" scenario.

There are obviously medical reasons why having a child with Down's syndrome can be scary, but not every child gets heart or bowel issues. My daughter is the cheekiest, most caring person I have ever met and she absolutely has an amazing quality of life and improves the lives of everyone around her. She's healthy and happy. What more could I ask for.

1 in 25 sounds big, but it is still quite a small chance so think positively. Even if the result comes back high chance then remember there's a whole lot of people in the Down's syndrome community who can offer you a true picture of what it's like to have a child with Down's syndrome. It is most definitely not all doom and gloom like the health professionals tell us. Make sure you can make an informed decision about what's best for you and your family.

Thank you for reply and how lovely you have your little girl she sounds a joy! I think what scares us is we have three children 9,5 and 5 months. I fell pregnant when my baby was 6 weeks old. The thought of having two so close in age and in the same school year is scary. It’s such an anxious and nerve wracking time. I am glad you’ve had a low risk result this time round. I am sure your little girl will make a fab big sister! X

Hello! My NT measurement was 3mm and my bloods came back 1:25 risk. We paid privately for the harmony test which came back low risk 1 in 10,000 for the three chromosome abnormalities. We’ve had scans since which look fine so far just waiting for my 20 week scan now. Your pods are higher than mine were so hopefully you’ll be fine!

The waiting game is truly horrific, the worst experience of my life.
My baby measured 3.5-3.8mm at the 12 week scan but I was remeasured by a specialist the next day who got 2.6mm three times so questionable whether they scanned correctly in the first place (the nuchal can’t reduce that much in 24hours).
Combined with bloods baby was given a 1:100 chance of DS and something like 1 in 100.000 for Edwards and Pataus, I opted for a CVS instead of Harmony as I wanted a definite result and to test for the wider range of conditions.

I’m now holding a healthy baby boy, negative for all of the conditions tested. You have good odds so hold onto that but nothing makes the wait easier I’m afraid.. everything crossed for you!

I have no experience of being told I was 'high risk' but my husbands cousin was 24 years old with her first and was told she was very low risk. However her son was born with Down's syndrome. So nothing anyone is told is a guarantee of anything. Its not an easy path but certainly not the end of anything either.
