Is this normal if you’re having consultant led care?

Hi,
I’m 12 weeks pregnant and going to be having consultant led care this time. I’ve had a letter through saying I have a midwife episode appointment next week. Ive no idea what it’s for! I’ve always had midwife led before so I was just wondering if anyone knows if this is standard for consultant led care?
Thanks.

I had about an extra 3 appointment all with a consultant and with my second they followed the same about of appointments as they do with first- usually second pregnancy has less appointments.

I also wore a heart monitor for a week and had an echo. But that’s because I have a heart condition

It completely depends on why you're consultant led. They should be able to explain more at your first appointment about your appointment schedule for when you'll see them and when you'll see midwife

Depends on why you’re consultant led. I was because I’m fat and had a previous section. We had a couple of telephone consultations where we discussed risk/benefits of vbac and then signed me back over to the midwives.

I saw someone every 2 weeks from 18 weeks and twice a week from 28 weeks but my first was premature with severe iugr and I had severe sudden onset pre eclampsia so was classed as extremely high risk.
This is quite unusual especially given covid so it really does depend on why you are consultant lead

Yeah I was consultant led twice and consultant appointments were on top of the usual community midwife ones

RedMarauder · 25/01/2021 12:53

Yes you still need to have appointments with the community midwife.

Until you see your consultation and s/he works out your treatment schedule and which healthcare practitioner is doing which appointments, just go to all the community midwife appointments you are given.

Then once you get your schedule from your consultant, either talk to that practitioner's healthcare practitioner's receptionist or them thrnselves within the following week to find out how you book appointments with them in good time.

My first son was premmie. So I had consultant led care with my second but it was only 1 extra scan at 34 weeks I think and about 2 extra midwife appointments. I supposed if I had any worrying signs I might have had more appointments.

Hi,
Thanks everyone for your replies. I was having trouble accessing my online maternity notes but I’ve just managed to log in. It seems it’s a telephone appointment with the midwife mental health team because I have suffered with anxiety in the past. I was concerned in case it was a problem with my blood test results or something!
This is my third pregnancy but first consultant led so I’m not used to getting all these letters and extra appointments through! I’ve got a few risk factors this time. My last baby got his shoulder stuck during delivery-he was fine though. I got a bad tear that I had to have repaired in theatre. Initially they thought it was a third degree but as I was being stitched someone said to me that it wasn’t as bad as they first thought and was actually the worst kind of 2nd degree (sorry don’t know how they classify that, is it a,b, c?)
Midwife at booking said because I ended up in theatre for it she would refer to consultant.
Then I have the risk factory of anxiety in the past which I was on medication for for a while.
Lastly my bmi is 31 so not sure if that qualifies for consultant led as well.

I was consultant led for mental health, I had an in person appointment around the time of my dating scan (pre lockdown 1) they discussed my notes in full and what it might mean for my pregnancy and afterwards. they suggested a referral to the perinatal team but my GP had already done this. I had a follow up appointment a few weeks after the anomaly scan, this was during lockdown 1 and was moved the phone as I didn't need to be seen in person for my reasons for being consultant led. The perinatal team had agreed to take me on so the consultant was happy to leave my care up to them so I didn't have to see the consultant again.

I imagine the first appointment will be to discuss your various risk factors and what the consequences would be, the they come up with a suitable pregnancy and birth plan for you
