Go to GP (or call them) and they will prob presribe a pessary. DOn't go taking anything or sticking anything up there without checking first though!!

Natural yoghurt helps - keep in fridge and apply when needed, lovely and soothing.

Wear cotton pants, no tights and don't use soap or showergel down there.

Have a mildly salted bath

OR add a few drops of tea tree oil to bath

....can you tell I get thrush much??!?!?!?!

Thanks. Feel a pain for going to GP with this, as only went other day with another issue. If not treated does thrush affect the pregnany/baby? Are there any foods best to avoid/eat to minimise recurrence.
....and ooh can feel the pain.....

No can't affect pregnancy other than make you damn uncomfortable - I had it from 30 weeks until I gave birth at 39 weeks!!

I sympathise massively xx

Friend had it on & off all the way thru her 1st pg, I'm sure you can use bicarb or something in bath to help ease itch too.

I had it mildly (which was bad enough) during pregnancy around 26 weeks. I used Canesten cream which had been okayed by GP (if I remember correctly) during my 1st pregnancy - but as the others say check with your GP first. I didn't risk the pessary but thankfully the cream did the trick.

I then tried to eat bio yogurt/drink those actimel type drinks daily and I have no idea if they worked but the thrush never came back during the pregnancy. Hope this helps, I know it's really irritating especially with all the other pregnancy niggles.

I totally sympathise- I had thrush at 4 weeks (the week we got the BFP) and again at 24 weeks - First time GP prescribed canestan cream which helped, I also slathered on the natural yogurt in the evenings - messy but soothing - but the best remedy both times seemed to be that I had a warm bath three nights running with 6 drops of tea tree oil and 4 drops of lavendar oil - worked a treat.

HTH - sending you cooling vibes

Pinky I've had it on and off since finding out I was pregnant a few weeks ago, am now 9 weeks. Canestan can work well but my Consultant Gynae always prescribes Gyno daktarin and I find it far more effective well canestan has no effect anymore other than irritating me more. I had it all the way through my pregnancy with DD one and have not gone for more than 4 or 5 dyas without symptoms so far this pregnancy so I am expecting to suffer for a long time. Sugar and yeast feeds thrush so try to cut them out of your diet if you can, I can't! I'm sure I read that tea tree oil is not safe in pregnancy so I would avoid it.

WeeWitchyWilkie · 30/10/2007 07:55

Lavender oil irritated me so beware. Also, what triggered my thrush was when I tried perennial massage with wheatgerm oil at 30 weeks. Regretted that majorly! If you are gonna perennial massage (I know it is ages away for you yet) then do it with KY Jelly instead.

Although thrush can't affect the baby when it is in the womb, you can pass it on to the baby during the birth so best to mention to gp/midwife if still getting symptoms closer to your due date. I think they are then prepared to treat the baby when it is born.

leesmum · 30/10/2007 10:46

I had thrush last week at 26 weeks, and i can honestly say it is one of the most horrific things i've ever had!! Got the canesten cream which was ok but the pessary worked overnight. I wouldn't hesitate to use again and my sympathies for all other sufferers. x

Hi
I would recommend going to the GP for a swab even if you think it's just thrush. I did and was diagnosed with Group B Strep as a result - not exactly welcome news but much better to find out now than later.

in Aus thrush is treated a lot with nystatin. its looovely and soothing. canestan cream just makes it itch worse. asked for nystatin here and my GP says he has never heard of it used this way but gave me a prescription after looking it up.

canestan oral tabs and nystatin cream worls well if its bad.

Nedmum · 15/11/2007 12:53

Re. passing it to baby. I got thrush in my boobs couple of days after birth from antibiotics, and it made breastfeeding hell (if thats what you're planning). Me and ds kept passing it back and forth through bf (his mouth, my boob and so on) and so had to give up at six weeks, which was not the plan. If you're planning on bf-ing, best get it properly sorted.

goingfor3 · 15/11/2007 12:58

I saw mt consultant yesterday who said the although most people think that thrush doesn't cause problems in pregnancy it can because it can very slowly erode the membranes and cause prem labour. He recommends using gyno-daktarin, if that doesn't work Nystatin. Canestan is not very effective for thrush in pregnancy.

threestars · 15/11/2007 23:01

I use cream. My midwife said use cream and if that really doesn't get rid of it, get a pessary. Re. oral tabs, the leaflet says they don't know if there's any effect on the baby or not as it's unethical to experiment so it's kinda up to you.

But MAKE SURE YOUR MAN USES CREAM TOO. Otherwise, you might be clearing yours up and then getting it back everytime he has his wicked way...
