Can a doctor miss a pregnancy or is it too early???

Sorry if too much information!!
So I went to the doctors last Thursday for an internal exam due to pains, took a pregnancy test beforehand as they asked which was negative! They put it down to inflamed cervix- antibiotics given and referred to gynaecologist and for ultrasound.
I have since taken a home test which has come back positive?!
Any advice or has anyone had anything similar happen?
Also only gave birth 6 months ago!!

I'm not sure what you mean by the doctor missing a pregnancy, they did an internal exam, that's not how pregnancy is confirmed

I wasn’t sure wether the cervix changed early after implantation you see!

If a pregnancy test was still coming back as negative then there won’t have been anything there for them to ‘miss’.

I understand I may have worded the title wrong, I’m just confused how it has gone from 100% negative test to strong positive 4 days later

That's how it works, you test negative until the HGC is strong enough to show a positive result. The GO wouldn't have known anything from doing an internal examination. I'm not sure what your actual issue is?

LauEli · 25/01/2021 07:56

Yes it's possible to have a negative then later a positive. Last week I tested Tuesday it was neg. I tested Thursday it was pos. So test wise yep it happens hcg wasn't strong enough on Tuesday, two more tests each two days spaced have confirmed I'm pregnant.
As for the internal part, it would be very difficult to find anything this early on in pregnancy, so yes quite easily missed.

@smoothchange there’s no need to be rude

I'm not being rude? I'm asking what the issue is you have here. Are you intending to complain that your doctor never told you that you were pregnant? Are you doubting your positive test? Just can't work out what you are looking for.

@LauEli thank you! I am waiting for my doctors to open to discuss stopping the antibiotics and the cause of the pains I’ve been having! Congratulations to you also!

@smoothchange no I’m not complaining I was just wondering wether this is something a doctor could have seen but clearly it isn’t. Im more wondering what the cause of my pains have been as I am obviously very early on if hcg has just been detected then this still doesn’t answer my initial questions of the visit to the doctors. Will they still refer to gynaecologist and for an ultrasound? Or will they not want to with me now having a positive test result.

"I’m just confused how it has gone from 100% negative test to strong positive 4 days later"

Easy, you weren't pregnant before and you are now. If you aren't pregnant enough for a test to pick up the HCG levels then there isn't anything there to miss really. The lining of your womb thickens a bit but that also happens every month, and if they aren't looking for signs of pregnancy then it isn't really going to stand out.

It depends what kinds of pains you were having. Are you still having them now or was it a one time thing?
I don't think they will refer you for an ultrasound because there still isn't really anything to see.

Many women experience cramping pain in early pregnancy so it sounds like it could have just as likely been that.

Mel892020 · 25/01/2021 08:36

@luxxlisbon thanks for this!
The pains have been ongoing for around 2 months now and the ultrasound was to check nothing was going on (not pregnancy) which is why I’m wondering if they’ll still go ahead with it or not bother.

Your ultrasound should still go ahead, you still have the pain issue. An ultrasound is fine to do when you are pregnant do no reason why ju would cancel it.

luxxlisbon · 25/01/2021 08:53

If this is something that has been ongoing for a while and you already have a scan appointment then I don't see why it wouldn't still go ahead. They will still be able to look at whatever they were hoping to investigate even with an early pregnancy.
