Depending on the temperature, we had ours in June last year, we were mainly in vests because it was roasting 28+ degrees.

Sleepsuits, with or without vests depending on temp. Didn’t really use much else because clothes are a faff and when you’re changing bums 17 of times a day you do not want faf.

We had about 10 of each (sleepsuit/different types of body suit) it was plenty it’s easy to wash stuff in the summer and just Chuck it on the line. Dries in a few hours.

@FTEngineerM thank you so much how long was your little one in newborn sleep suits before you went on to 0-3 month

He was 7lb 6oz but 55cm born so long and skinny😂, we only had ‘newborn’ and 0-3 BUT I didn’t realise the weights on the clothing. Not all newborn is equal. Some are up to 7lb, some up to 9lb some are 10lb some 0-3 are up to 12lb and others up to 14lb.

It was a minefield, we ended up going on Facebook market place after he was born and buying 7lb clothes because all the newborn we’d bought was 10lb and it was enormous.

It would be worth checking the actual weight of the clothes from different shops and start at 7lb with a few bits but getting more 0-3 would be good because they’ll be in those for a guaranteed length of time whereas they may not ever fit the 7lb.

Sorry that’s a ramble, I found it so hard picking sizes. Also diagonal poppers from next on the sleep suits is a nightmare for changing. Wedging the leg up to their chest to get it out at 3am when you’re bleary eyed isn’t funSmile

Congratulations you must be mega excited

MrsZ19 · 24/01/2021 10:15

@FTEngineerM oh my goodness I didn’t realise newborn clothes were different weights 😂 now this has really thrown me 🤣
Thank you so much I will keep this in mind when shopping now.

Yes we are soooooo excited, we have been trying for three years and had given up hope so it was so lovely to find out we were expecting 🥰

I can’t remember exactly now but when possible go into some shops to look at the labels, I’m not sure it says much more than 0-1m/0-3m online.

Awww, what a lovely surprise. For what it’s worth, June was a lovely time for a newborn. I didn’t ever have to worry about him being cold and everyone was out and about walking making a fuss of us.

Good luck Grin

I’m due in June and this has really confused me too ....

After researching a lot I’ve decided to get some up to 7lb and some in the next size up which is usually up to 9/10lb. Got about 10 sleepsuits in each size . On hot days he will probably be in a vest or the shorty rompers. Others I’ve spoken to have said a normal sleep suit is fine for the summer months unless it’s unusually hot .

I’ve tried to stay away from anything thick or knitted . I haven’t bothered with long sleeve vests, just a mixture or short sleeve and sleeveless.

Got the majority of mine from M&S, Next, Zara and John Lewis as they have a good sale on Smile

We bought asdas first size it goes up to ~9lbs but wasn't stupidly big in my lo at 6lb13. We could have fitted into newborn/tiny baby but we decided against it.
I bought ~12 short sleeved vests and 5 sleepsuits ahead of time in first size. I had lots of 0-3 donated from a friend so we only bought 1 pack of vests prior to her arrival.

She was born in August in the middle of a heatwave but still spent the first 2 days in a vest and a sleepsuit as even 28 deg it was cooler than the 37 deg bath she had spent the last 9 months in.
After the first few days we had her in just a vest. After a week or two the heat wave left and we had her in a sleepsuit overnight and bought some long sleeved vests and leggings for the day

MrsZ19 · 24/01/2021 13:22

Thanks everyone this has really helped me.
I think I may have over bought on a few sleepsuits 🤣 I have about 20 and thought it wouldn’t be enough. 😂😂 hopefully my little boy will have enough time to wear them
All 🤣

Lots of bodysuits and sleepsuits, outfits are a bit awkward with newborns as they can be quite messy for such little things.
Size wise 1st size are suitable for most but you should have stock of 0-3 in too.
Our 1st was 7lb 7oz and in 1st size for the 1st couple of months. Our 2nd was 10lb 12oz and only fit in 1st size for 2 weeks before moving up to 0-3.

Chelyanne · 24/01/2021 13:34

Oh and brand has a big impact on the length of time they get out of clothes. I find Next do clothes in very generous sizes for kids, Boots do them in a very small fit, supermarkets are a bit in-between but such good value that it's fine.

MrsZ19 · 24/01/2021 14:09

thank you all.
I have just been through all our bits, we have 24 sleep suites and 12 outfits in 0-3 so I think that should be more than enough right ?
I just need to need to buy some newborn/ first size as I only have 3 sleep suites

That is quite alot I think - if you could return some of them I definitely would. If you think that they'll only get 3 mths out of all those outfits that's only two or three times each (or more if they're a sicky baby but we someone said upthread they'll dry quickly in the summer. We had approx 6 newborn/first size and approx 8/10 x 0-3 which was more than enough.

MrsZ19 · 24/01/2021 15:03

@Moo31 yeah I think we may have gone over board a little 😁 thank you I might he to return some

Our 1st had reflux... before we got control of it she'd be in 3-4 sets of clothes a day because she'd guzzle down and sick it up again. So that many sleepsuits is not a bad idea sometimes. If baby is not sick much it'll mean you have to wash less frequently.

Superscientist · 24/01/2021 23:03

We are doing cloth nappies so wash every 2 days so haven't needed too many changes of clothes. 10-12 vests and similar number of sleepsuits should be plenty.
Once my lo was more than a few weeks old I have preferred to put her in clothes during the day. I have 3 vest and dungarees sets and 3 tshirt and leggings in size 0-3months and will get a similar number in bigger sizes as she grows. I like the t shirt and leggings as she is refluxy and it usually only involve half an out fit change. It helps me separate out the nights and days especially in lockdown when we can't go out.

Wherethereshope · 24/01/2021 23:10

I found DS was in newborn for a while as he was all scrunched up then we quickly skipped through 0-3 months.

My top tip would be wash them all then compare the sizes, you'll prob find some of the 0-3 you have are smaller.

Romper suits are good for summer babies or footless babygrows for a bit more airflow

You'll get bought loads of stuff when baby arrives too don't forget. If you have too much,, most places will exchange unopened packets so just change the size

Babyjune21 · 25/01/2021 04:52

Now this is a threat I needed !! I’m due early June ( c section ) this is my 2nd baby and my first he was born in early feb ! So was bloody freezing !!! I new how to keep a new born all lovely and cozy !! But now I’m sitting thinking how on earth do a keep a new born at the perfect temp in the middle of summer ! Not only that we stay in Scotland !! So one minute it’s roasting heat wave next day you’ve got the heating on cause it’s raining and freezing haha so I totally understand x

Inkpaperstars · 25/01/2021 12:03

Reading some of these replies, am I right in thinking that you use a full sleep suit with sleeves etc at night even when it’s warm? Or would you use sleeveless?

Superscientist · 25/01/2021 14:48

It depends on the temperature of the room and what covers you are using. There are lots of charts that show you how many layers you need for what conditions if you search images something like sleeping bag tog clothes

Inkpaperstars · 25/01/2021 22:47

Thanks @Superscientist. This babycare thing is all quite complicated isn’t it Grin or seems so at first anyway!
