Sac is bigger than the foetus but no heartbeat at 5 weeks

I originally thought of was 12 weeks but I have my dates wrong, I have been bleeding since Monday but I found out I had a water infection thought it was all down to that but it got worse the bleeding.
I've had no pain, I ended up at the early pregnancy unit I had a vaginal scan and they said the baby was nearly 6 weeks and the sac was measuring at 8 weeks and 3 days.
They said because there isn't a heartbeat I've more than likely had a miscarriage. But isn't 5 weeks too early to hear a heartbeat? they have said come back in a week but there is a high chance the baby has died.
I have been reading so many different stories that the baby is too small for a heartbeat just really worried.

@Bexxirosee20 in sorry you are going through this.

I think they maybe mean the sac shows that you have been pregnant for 8 weeks, but the baby has only grown to 5 weeks. This lack of growth in the 8 weeks suggests the pregnancy isnt viable, which has likely led to miscarriage.

If you had only been pregnant 5 weeks, then you are correct that you might not see a heartbeat yet, but then the sac should be a 5 week size.

They will be scanning again next week to check that the baby hasn't grown further.

I hope the above doesnt sound harsh - I was trying to be clear for you. I'm wishing you all the best and am very sorry x

I understand that! Thankyou for your answer but I have been reading the sac is always bigger and more weeks on than the foetus.
I am just confused

The sac will always be bigger than the fetal pole but should always be in proportion with it.

So the pp is correct in saying that if the sac measured 8 weeks, while it would measure bigger than the fetal pole, the fetal pole should also measure 8 weeks.

It obviously could end up with the fetal pole somehow measuring a lot further behind than the sac and will catch up by your next scan, but I’d prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Good luck x
