Just red and sore bum and she cries when being changed and it’s horrid :(
Using warm water and cotton wool to clean her up and know it’s advised not to put anything on newborn skin.
Thanks in advance:)

Also disagree with the wipes comments. I’m pregnant with my third and will be using cotton wool and water for the first few weeks, as I did with my other 2.

Breast milk or egg whites work wonders. Metanium is great too, I still use this on my youngest now.

I don’t know when the cotton wool and water advice came in, my first is now 9 and it was just baby wipes. The cotton wool and water thing just seems such an unnecessary faff.
I tried sudocrem, bepanthen, all sorts, but the only thing bc that worked was metainium. Magical stuff, would clear up a rash overnight.

gamerchick · 22/01/2021 10:55

Just go canny with the sudocrem. It has to be rubbed in properly and not used as a thick barrier. It can affect the nappies absorbancy.

WitchDancer · 22/01/2021 10:59

I didn't like sudocream as it was thick and claggy. Once I found bepanthan cream I didn't use anything else.

BertieBotts · 22/01/2021 11:01

I was given Bepanthen in hospital to use with DS2 from newborn.

DenisetheMenace · 22/01/2021 11:02

Sudocrem worked for us.
Congratulations

My DD had a sore bottom in the first few days too, we used Weleda Calendula nappy change cream and it cleared it up quickly. Swear by it now. I prefer it to Metanium.

NeurologicallySpeaking · 22/01/2021 11:07

Have used cotton wool and water for all my babies. Much gentler than wipes. We then swap to water wipes when they toughen up a bit.

Metanium worked wonders on DD1 for her whole time in nappies but made DD2's bum even more red and angry. In the end we had to get Timodene prescribed by the GP which treats thrush and infected nappy rash.

My first 4 DC had no issues with sore bottoms, my 5DC had a red, sore bottom from the outset. Her skin seems more sensitive than the others. I switched to water wipes and no harm bum balm, it was more expensive but a little went a long way. I tried various other creams with little success, this one worked wonders.

A flannel soaked with cold water draped over bum for 5 mins does wonders

Thesearmsofmine · 22/01/2021 13:13

Aww the poor little lamb, I would stick with warm water and cotton pads and gently pat dry and then lots of fresh air to her bottom. Pop a towel under her.

I would maybe try to work out what is causing the issue too.

Iknewyouwerewaitingforme · 22/01/2021 13:16

Cold water on a compress is better at healing than warm actually and Id not pat dry but allow the water to fully soak into skin/ dry naturally.

I used Weleda Calendula nappy change cream from day 1, didn't know I shouldn't Confused also did cotton wool and water, as much nappy free time as possible, and used nappies without many chemicals in them

Jamill87 · 26/01/2021 17:46

My daughter used to get this all the time as a baby, she is 8 now Smile the only thing that worked and pretty quick was canesten cream. Hope you find something that works x
