Panicking about size of baby

Hi ladies,

I'm just after some reassurance really as I'm a FTM and scared I'm about to give birth to a huge baby 😱.

I measured 31cm at 29 weeks and 35cm at 31 weeks. Midwife said she's not sending me for a growth scan as she's really just looking for confirmation baby is growing which she clearly is but now I'm worried she's going to be huge!

I was 8.2 and my OH 7.6 when we were born. I'm 5ft 7 and he's 5ft 9 and both naturally slim. My bump is much smaller thany friends who is due the week before me so I was really shocked to be told I'm measuring that big and now I'm worried she's going to be huge!

Anyone else start out a normal BMI, gain a normal amount of weight in pregnancy and measure this big only for baby to be average size?

My baby isn't measuring quite as big as yours but still most definitely on the larger side and I was worried. A few things reassured me:

1 - loads of people told me that these measurements are really imprecise and seem to bear no relation to the size of the baby. They are more interested in growth.

2 - a lot of people told me it can actually be easier to give birth to a bigger baby (up to a point). My Mum said I was a lot quicker and less painful at 9lb+ than my younger brother at 7lb.

3 - bigger babies are supposed to be easier when they are born. They sleep more and establish feeding patterns more easily in general.

Not sure if this helps!

I measured normal all the way through pregnancy with dd according to the tape measure. At my last midwife apt she was checking position with her hands on my bump and told me baby would be bigger than ds was. Dd was 9lb 9oz.

Measurements for dc3 were smaller than they should be. He was born at 36 weeks and was 7lb 2.5oz, not small at all for 4 weeks early, so would have been similar to dd if he’d got to 40 weeks.

My friend was told she was having a huge baby according to the tape measure. Her dd was 6lb 5oz.

I measured big all the way through with my second, was told he'd be about 10lb when born. He was 7lb 6oz, but long. I wouldn't worry too much at all

I'm 5ft 8, hubby 5ft 9. With our eldest my bump measured slightly ahead but she was only 7lb 7oz at 39+6.
Our 2nd my bump was huge, had a growth scan at 28wk as part of a research programme and he was 4 weeks ahead on growth and came out 10lb 12oz at 40+5. Our 3rd again bump was always ahead and growth scan showed the same, 9lb 10oz at 40+2. Our twins, no fundamental height is done as they scan every 2-4 weeks depending on type of twins. Ours were fraternal so done every 4 weeks and they were big for dates too, 8lb 5oz & 8lb 11oz at 38wk.

Bigger babies aren't too bad to deliver. I had natural births with all our singletons the smaller had to have vontouse the bigger ones I pushed out unassisted. Episiotomy with eldest 2 and tore with 3 as she came faster than expected. Twins came out the sunroof lol.

Shock Shock Shock
Your twins combined weight!?!?! Oh my goodness, were you very uncomfortable towards the end?? Am in absolute awe Grin

Don’t panic, my 1st bump measured over the 90th centile but DC1 was 6 lbs 13, just under the 25th.

I’m 5’8 and DH 6’2, I have a long body shape and DC1 came out pretty long. My NCT friend had a teeny bump and she’s super thin but her DC was bigger 🤷🏻‍♀️

@daisydalrymple yeah, the last 3 months were uncomfortable. I had spd too so I don't think I slept much more than an hour at a time. I was exhausted and in a fair bit of pain, my husband was in a cast with a broken leg for the last 12 weeks of my pregnancy too. I did end up with diastasis recti (ab separation) which caused a lot of back pain for over 2 years after, I've fixed that with powerlifting in the gym over the past 3.5 years though. I'm aound 9+5wk pregnant again and will know if it's a singleton or twins in a few weeks.

They said our DS was measuring big - he was 5lb 14.

Don't worry, you will be fine and in the best place Thanks

My first was 9lb and second 11lb 11oz 😳. Only had gas and air. I was absolutely huge because as well as having a big baby I had excess fluid. Was checked for diabetes but didn't have it. My son is 17 now. He's fine, no lasting effects and is normal weight! Good luck, all will be fine x

Chelyanne wow fair play to you having another! (Or two 😍) hope all goes smoother this time 🤞

My fundal measurements were on the 90th centile. Baby was born under the 10th centile at 5lb12oz and I got a 3rd degree tear which required surgery. Everyone I know has had bigger babies and whilst some had 1st or 2nd degree tears which may have needed a couple of stitches, none of them had 3rd degree or needed surgery. They do say bigger babies are easier to deliver.
