Baby Clothes - what to buy!

Hello!

FTM - Currently 14+3 and due in July but thinking about baby clothes for my little girl. I’ve bought a few things from M&S, Zara & Jojo MamanBebe because it’s just too cute🥺

I’m interested to know how much of each sizing people bought? I know you also need to consider people will gift a lot of clothes. I’m buying most things (sleep suits / baby grows) in up to 1 month and couple plain bits in newborn size.. but unsure on quantities as a rough guide? I know every baby is different but I’m quite petite so don’t know if that means I will have a small baby ☺️

Hope this makes sense, don’t want to have loads of nice clothes that isn’t worn! It’s also summer time so need seasonal clothing too! Thanks xxx

I bought 5 vests and sleep suits in tiny baby and up to one month respectively. Glad I did as our little one decided to arrive a month early and the up to one month would have swamped her.
Different shops size very differently, we find Sainsbury's and Asda quite generous.

We did get given clothes as gifts but these tended to be 0-3months or bigger and often were outfits too nice for everyday wear so it was good to have some basic wardrobe staples ready to go.

I was given tonnes of 0-3 and 3-6. Bought nothing smaller than up to one month and had a very average sized baby that was drowned by everything.

Almost everyone bought me 3-6 months as they all said they thought everyone else would buy newborn/0-3!
I also only bought up to one month as the smallest size but my 7 pound baby was swamped so had to get family to go out for newborn bits.

I also only used sleepsuits/vests. Don't bother with cute outfits/dresses until they're at least 6 months. I actually didn't get dresses until walking stage as they get all tangled up when trying to crawl.

I had a summer baby last year. We bought vests and sleep suits in tiny baby and newborn, around eight of each. She got through all of the tiny baby ones just in hospital. We also had short sleeved romper vests which were brilliant as it was such a hot summer, and some strappy vests. We did have some nice summer dresses but only put her in them from when she was about a month old.

Im petite 5,2 and around 8 stone and had an 8.9lb baby and newborn barely fit. Upto 1 months lasted about 2 weeks lol. If you go over your due date too that'll as a few extra oz. Even still ive bought newborn and smaller newborn sizes incase shes smaller but dont have much. If shes small people will just have to run out and buy some bits for me.

Honestly don't buy much (if you can resist) you'll get presents/ people pass over outgrown clothes. Wait until you know what shape child you have and the style of clothes you like. One of my friend has had a baby recently and her baby has very long legs so couldn’t wear a lot of the stuff.I’d just get the basics and enjoy shopping when the baby is here.

I’m petite and I had a 9 pounder and her length is off the charts. She went straight into 0-3 months and is now in 12-18 months at 8 months old Shock. It can be tricky to get baby clothes with lockdown so I would try to get a few things in a good selection of sizes if you can. I bought a huge bag of clothes second hand online ranging from newborn to 24 months for about 40 quid and these have really come in handy. I just made sure to give everything a good wash first.

MJM1608 · 21/01/2021 09:06

@Koolandorthegang oh wow how was giving birth? I guess I won’t know until nearer the time whether she’s a big baby or not then! Thanks for the tips ☺️

@peachypetite it’s the resisting that’s the hard part, I feel like it’s the only excitement I have at the mo until my next scan 😂😂

The birth was eventful. Went for my 38 week scan on the Friday and my consultant realised DD was likely to be a big baby so she booked me in for induction on the next available date which was the following Wednesday. She also gave me a sweep at that point.

Went in on Wednesday morning and they gave me the pessary. Thursday at 5pm they broke my waters and I went up to the labour ward at 9 pm. Friday morning at 9 am I was still at 9 cm and DD’s head was turned the wrong way so I ended up with a C Section for failure to progress.

So not the quickest or most straight forward of births but she got here in the end! There’s a history of big babies in my family so I was half expecting it to turn out this way to be honest.

I hadn’t made a birth plan, I just wanted to go with the flow, keep an open mind and follow the advice of the medical team and get DD out safe. I think this attitude helped me to remain calm throughout the whole thing.

Sorry, I hope this hasn’t freaked you out or anything! It was eventful but turned out fine in the end.

Up to 1 month was perfect for my 8lbs 1oz baby for about 4 weeks (she wore 0-3 from about 2 weeks too). We had about 10 sleepsuits, 10 vests, and a handful of cardigans. It was plenty.

peachypetite · 21/01/2021 09:51

My baby is two months and still in first size, it varies so much.

Woodlandbelle · 21/01/2021 09:53

My babies wouldn't fit into the newborn stuff so we used plenty of 0-3 babygrows. Plenty - they really only wore these and I occasionally dressed them up in outsits.

We really had nothing to buy until they were 9 months. Another useful purchase were the sleep bags.. We used three. One on at one one in the wash and a spare.

PrimeraVez · 21/01/2021 09:57

We bought tons of newborn stuff and then he was born at 10lbs 3oz and went straight into 0-3. I wouldn't go overboard - just a few things in each size.

(Same with wipes and nappies - we stocked up on tons and tons of a certain brand of baby wipes and quickly found out that they irritated DC's sensitive skin so couldn't use them)

NewMumma1819 · 21/01/2021 10:05

We had a few bits in every size, he was 7lb13oz and the tiny baby was way to small. He also had massive feet so he grew out of sleepsuits quite quickly soley because of that. And his head was quite large so he needed 0-6month hats rather than new born or tiny baby.

Superscientist · 21/01/2021 11:13

A head of time I bought 10-12 short sleeved vests 5-6 sleepsuits in first size and 5 vests in 0-3 months (we were then gifted lots of 0-3 months 2nd hand clothes)

She was 6lb13 at birth going down to 6lb8 the first sized clothes were on the big side but not ridiculously big. If she had been any smaller we would have bought tiny baby. After she was born we bought a further 6 first sized sleepsuits and 5 long sleeved vests in up to 1 month. She was in first size until 8 weeks and up to 1 month about 10 weeks, we are just growing out of our 0-3 month clothes at 5 months as she's a tiddler!

First size should cover 6.5 to 9lb comfortably you only need tiny baby or straight into 0-3 months if you are expecting a baby either of that or a particularly long baby

MJM1608 · 21/01/2021 16:46

Thank you so much everyone! This is really helpful ☺️ Hope your babies are all doing well xx
