Cervical length worry

Baby2be · 18/01/2021 05:14

I had an ultrasound at 11w2d in which my cervical length was measuring at 3.5cm. I have done a lot of googling and it seems like the average length should be about 4cm and above at this time. The doctor did not mention anything about my cervix but I’m worried that it’s measuring too short too early. Anyone else had such experience with their pregnancy and went on to full-term?

If there was issues with it being too short you would have been told? Mine was short, but very short and I was placed on a trial drug in the end. I was under consultant care who gave me regular measurements. I lasted until 33 weeks.
It is early days, so try not to worry.

I saw a specialist for cervix issues and they said 16 weeks is the earliest they start to measure, even in ladies with previous complications. They were not at all concerned with measurements from before that.

I do think you should always check anything playing on your mind with your midwife or Doctor though. They will be happy to give you reassurance or direct you to help.

This was helpful. I have an NT scan booked for 12w4d and I will discuss this with the MFM doctor to put my mind at ease.

@Baby2be I have similar concerns as I had a LLETZ procedure about 5 years ago, and after spotting two weeks ago I was found to have a polyp on my cervix. I’m 12 weeks and at 9 weeks I saw the consultant who decided they wouldn’t even need to check my cervix length as said I didn’t have all that much removed, however to me this seems slightly risky. Was yours checked as routine at your 12 week scan?? I’ve got mine on Friday. I’m having the polyp looked at on Thursday, so I might ask if they’re able to comment on the length although I suspect not. Because of the polyp I’m back to consultant care, so I think because of this added complication I will push for it to be measured to double check!

As others have said, if you believe yours to be too short no harm in double checking and asking what the next steps would be x

So sadly this sort of care really differs depending on hospital and consultant.

I had my ds at 28+1 due to unknown incompetent cervix. This pregnancy I'm under a great consultant and had my length check at 10+5 and it was 2.6 so was short for gestation (they worry when u get to 2.5 and under) had a cervical stitch and started on progesterone at 13+5 now I'm 27 weeks with a length of 3.2 so they are happy with that and hoping to go to term.
I would suggest if ur not happy push to be scanned again once u reach 16 weeks as that for most women the baby's weight will start to effect the cervix.
Also For the poster who had a letz I would push to be scanned, seen so many lady's not had a lot removed and ended up with probs, you have to push for the care u feel is right, it's ur body and baby not theirs, it's a quick 10 min app with a tv scan to rule out if any probs xx

@MintGreenLife I had to go to the emergency room because of a small bleed at 11w2d. Everything was fine and the doctor didn’t mention anything about the cervix but I saw the cervix length on doctor’s notes and worried myself. I have my 12 week scan coming up this week and I’m surely going to inquire about this.

@boymum88 I mentioned the cervix length to the nurses and they didn’t comment on it. Maybe it’s too early for them to be looking into that and I have heard that they only start taking this seriously only if a woman has history of preterm birth. This is my first pregnancy and I would like to catch it sooner rather than later.

At my 12w scan mine was measuring 3.8cm.
I think yours is normal!

I'm a doctor with a fairly major uterine abnormality (so at risk of cervix issues) and currently almost 24weeks. I know faaaaar two much about this issue!

Firstly, cervix measurements are completely and utterly useless before 14weeks (and shouldn't be done before this point). Secondly, unless you have a proper indication for needing a cervix check there's really no cause for concern -- have you had a preterm birth/cervix surgery etc etc? Thirdly, that's a pretty normal cervix length for anyone at any stage - no one bats an eyelid until it drops below 25mm.

Also, was it measured transvaginally? Transabdominal cervix measurements aren't reliable.

So for many, many reasons, I really wouldn't worry - cervical incompetence doesn't cause issues so early in pregnancy. If you do have reasons to be worried about your cervix you still have another month before you hit the point of needing monitoring! If you live in London St Thomas's has a dedicated clinic that follows women at high risk of cervical incompetence.

@Snuffleupagus2021 thank you for your response. You don’t know how much you have helped me today. My prayers are with you that you have a smooth journey on the rest of your pregnancy ❤️

Hi everyone,

I’m not sure if this is the correct thread. I’m
7+2 at the moment, I had a MMC last October so on edge about every twinge or lack of!

Does anyone know if you could feel without touching if you had a low cervix? I worry that I can feel slight pressure every now and then that makes me tense up a little with the feeling I’m pulling everything back (but only slightly).

I’ve been told in previous smear tests that I have a bit of a tilted cervix so worried this may cause a problem.

Anyone had anything similar?
Xxx
