Second-hand smoke one exposure

Went round to our friends last night.

I’ve generally been really ‘good’ this pregnancy eating well, not smoking (I’m a non smoker anyway) or drinking alcohol, getting exercise etc

For some reason I just didn’t think about/ haven’t heard much or researched second hand smoke. My partner doesn’t smoke at home at all. I know that smoking myself is not good and I’m a non smoker anyway

Last night round the friends they were both smoking. Probably 5-6 small rolled cigerettes, tobacco and papers with a bit of marajuana in them, not much. The window was open but just a crack. Was over about a 6 hour period but by the end noticed I was coughing a bit and we left.

Looking back now I realise I should have insisted they go in another room- they are both very laissez faire people. Haven’t been in that situation before and won’t be in it again and realise i made a mistake with it.

My question is would this one time exposure potentially be serious/ more worrying, especially since I had symptoms like coughing at the end. I’m not over anxious but I’m wondering if anyone knows if it is very dangerous from one time exposure. Again this won’t be a repeated event.

I wouldn't worry about 1 exposure

I would wonder why you were meeting other people indoors when we are in a pandemic though

Bunnybigears · 17/01/2021 16:10

I wouldn't worry too much as a one off plus what's done is done. If you are in the UK I think meeting indoors was more risky.

It wouldn’t do any harm; pretty selfish of them to smoke inside when you’re a non smoker and pregnant though

LittleTiger007 · 17/01/2021 16:18

Hopefully you are not in the uk OP? Otherwise that’s the bigger issue right now. We aren’t supposed to be seeing anyone.

They are in our support bubble as a vulnerable person living on their own so we go to support them. We don’t see anybody else.

Do you mean it was your partner and the friend that were smoking?

hohohopeless · 17/01/2021 16:24

Your baby will be fine.

dementedpixie · 17/01/2021 16:25

I wouldn't worry about it as a one off.

If you're in the situation again you need more ventilation and/or they go to a different room or refrain from smoking around you at all

Slipthroughthenet · 17/01/2021 16:35

Dementedpixie yes partner and friend were smoking. Just to clarify, sorry I wasn’t clear earlier. Thanks for the reassurance

Nothing to worry about honestly

One exposure to second hand smoke, don’t worry too much. Establish an absolute no smoking inside rule in your own home, ask your partner to get help to stop smoking as any parent smoking impacts on the health of a child and have a serious discussion about the acceptability of smoking marijuana. These are more important issues than a single exposure to second hand smoke.
