Morning sickness - can dr presribe anything

I know GPs are reluctant to presribe drugs for morning sickness but I have really severe nausea, all day every day and am finding it really difficult to cope at the moment. With my previous pregnancies, I had nausea & vomiting to weeks 16/14 - I can't imagine feeling like this for another 6 weeks (am just past the 8w mark with a twin pregnancy). Is there anything the dr can prescribe? If not, I won't waste time making an apt but if so, I'll go along and ask. Thanks!

Yes there are,so don't worry. I had anti-sickness tablets all the way through my pg with triplets and it did me and the babies no harm what-so-ever. I had sickness all day and it was awful, tried anti-sickness bands and all things natural first but none of them worked. you don't have to take the tablets every day either, you just take them when it gets too much. Also if you are having a twin pg you might feel worse or the sickness could be stronger than normal. I didn't stop feeling sick until the last couple of months!!!
Congratulations on your twins though!! It will be wonderful

LadyTophamHatt · 28/10/2007 16:06

I asked for something when PG and they said no.

Basically I had to suffer it!!!

I see by your nickname you've a namechnager...can we have a teeny weeny clue?
preety please??

changeofnameforthis · 28/10/2007 16:06

Oh thank you TrickOrTripletEm. And congratulations on your triplets - wow! I've been feeling awful pretty much since conception but it's getting beyond a joke - I've been signed off work for 5 weeks, spend my days lying on the couch, the house looks like a pigsty and I don't have the energy to do anything about it and I constantly feel like I'm just about to vomit - ugh. Have tried the bands too but they're not helping. Still trying to get my head around the 'twins' bit of it and the sickness ain't helping. Shall make an apt with Dr this week and see what he/she says. You've cheered me up no end

Hi, I ahd avomine in all 4 pregnancies, there is nothing officially licensed to be prescribed but some medications ahve been used for many years. Can I suggest a look at the blooming awful website, as there is a list of medications, self help tip and lots mroe? will grab you a link.

changeofnameforthis · 28/10/2007 16:08

Aaargh - LTH, please don't tell me that. No clues but I will go back to my own name when we tell family/friends ... just don't want to spill the beans via Mumsnet incase there are lurkers

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 28/10/2007 16:08

link here you go

changeofnameforthis · 28/10/2007 16:08

used to be info person for that website, its good

LTH- you were given shite advice! Sadly though that's common, After 3 pregnancies with the mediation, a new GP and I still had to fight for it the 4th time!

TrickORTripletEm · 28/10/2007 16:12

Awwww!! It's awful isn't it?!!!

I remember those days, trying to cook something before I was sick, I'd be dancing around the cooker like I needed a wee!!!
Those tablets will take the edge off of those urgy feelings and you'll just feel a little bit icky instead, but nowhere near the sort of sickness you have now that stops you from doing anything. Oh, and take all the rest you can now, don't try to be wonderwoman, rest will help you, don't worry about the house twin pg is a good excuse!!!

By the way have you been over to the Multiple mums thread? Lots of twin mums and expecting twin mummys there. Most of them chat on the Dy'ever......thread. Hope to see you there sometime

lomondgore · 28/10/2007 16:13

I was very ill both times I was pregnant and they still wouldn't prescribe anything as nothing is proven to be safe in pregnancy. When it got so bad that I was dehydrated and very weak the doc then put it all on my head and said that if I was willing to take the risks then he would give me something. I declined as I didn't want to take the risk and suffered it i'm afraid.

He did say that if I got even more dehydrated I would be taken into hospital and put on a drip, this would be what he would prefer to do before we went down the route of sickness drugs.

My thoughts are with you, I know how unpleasant it is. Just think of the beautiful twins you will have at the end of it.

I think it depends upon the gp though.

boolepew · 28/10/2007 16:14

I was hospitalised during both my pg's but when released I was prescribed anti-sickness tablets, sorry can't remember the name! You can also get an injection. Congratulations!

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 28/10/2007 16:16

Souns like stematil? when with ds1 I was admitted for rehydration stematil was the first thing they gave me- also known as bucastem in oral format.

Plenty of meds have been used reliably for years but there are no ethical testing protocols for pg women- how could there be? But as dehydration is a big risk to baby and Mother (I almost died) the risks are often worth taking.

TrickORTripletEm · 28/10/2007 16:18

hello Peachy stranger!!

LadyTophamHatt · 28/10/2007 16:19

Peachy, they didn't say there wasn't something i could take(bad grammer, sorry) they just said I couldn't have it.

I creid in the surgery.

and they still said no.

Ok, nameofchange, I suppose we'll ahve to wait for the announcment

boolepew · 28/10/2007 16:23

I used the 'being sick all over the Dr's desk' routine. Worked a treat

boolepew · 28/10/2007 16:24

If you get Stemeil don't expect to be awake for more than 5 minutes in a day.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 28/10/2007 16:25

Hiya Em , hows it all going?

They do the refuse thing a lot- usually it takes a repeat trip or two to get anything. With ds1, they refused a few times- until DH found me in a coma and I was rushed into hospital! THEN they beleived me.... .

I do understand the reasons, its partly the fear of meds but also because hyperemesis is actually so rare- 3 in 1000 pregnancies. So many GP's hardly ever see a severe case. The sad thing is, the number of Mums desperate to keep thir baby who feel forced into a temrination as a result of hyperemesis- there's a website I know of catering for just those Mums and it is so sad.

Whereas a medication like stemetil or avomine 9and avomine after all is a travel sickness med) will ahve been used in so many pregnancies that if they were ecorded they'd far outstrip the number required for a clinical trial.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 28/10/2007 16:26

Boolpev- vomine the same LOL! Knocked me out flat- but tiredness and nausea linked so thats a bonus really. Also found I only needed to do a day on meds then could ahve a few days of as system would readjust for a bit, before I got bad again- didnt need the meds every day.

Neverenoughpumpkins · 28/10/2007 16:28

Dear changeofnameforthis

You are correct in that GPs are reluctant to prescribe anything in pregnancy as a general rule, as most medications are not licensed for use in pregnancy because they have not been tested. Clearly, they never will be as Peachy said for eithical reasons.
That doesn't mean they can't be prescribed but that the GP has to be 100% confident that the benefits outweight the (putative) risks.
If you've tried eveything and are still miserable, then there is no reason not to prescribe.
But it is ultimately the prescribing Dr who is responsible-so you can understand, if you were prescribed something and, say, your leg fell off, your GP would a) feel terrible b) potentially be in big medicolegal trouble.
I do hope you feel better soon, however!

lou33 · 28/10/2007 16:32

i was prescribe metaclopromide (sp?) for my pregnancies

i used the acupressure bands too

changeofnameforthis · 28/10/2007 16:33

Thanks everyone for your advice ... I am going to go along and ask cos I just feel soooooo miserable. They can only say no - but they'd better not cos I'm hormonal and who knows what I might do

TrickorTripletEm ... I've had a look on the multiples threads but haven't posted yet.

TrickORTripletEm · 28/10/2007 16:34

We are all fine thanks Peachy, nice to hear from you. I play on the Sanctuary thread at the moment if you ever want to come over to the dark side!!!!

Peachy is sooooo right. If you want the tablets you really have to make it clear that it is your body your decision. It's not easy, hopefully you have a good Dr and I didn't have any problems myself(maybe because I was carrying three and they knew how risky it was)but I know lots of people who did. I tell you who got hold of them for me and that was my midwife. She suggested them and because I was too ill to get to the doctors she spoke to him for me.Perhaps you could discuss it with yours,if you are seeing her yet.

TrickORTripletEm · 28/10/2007 16:35

They are all really nice,so when you have 'come out' don't be shy!!!!

sideways · 28/10/2007 16:36

I also ended up in hospital on a drip before being given drugs. Luckily the hospital gaive the drugs to me at the same time as the drip and I took them for a couple of months.

As Peachy said, if someone had offered me a termination in hospital at my lowest moments, I would have been very very tempted to say yes, just to stop feeling so terrible. I'm now offthe drugs and can't believe I ever felt that way.
