Dental x ray at 20 weeks

After three or four nights of excruciating tooth pain at night I had an emergency dental examination which involved an x ray and now I am worried that I have done something negative towards baby.

The dentist insisted that I wasn’t to worry he was patronising actually. Literally Said I was silly to bring it up.

I checked on phone about the safety and I was satisfied now I’m worried that I have done something silly.

Have tried to call midwife but no luck yet with reply.

Don't worry too much. Dental x-rays are best avoided but they are very unlikely to cause any harm if you do need them.
Your baby will be fine and hopefully so will you once all work has been completed to fix your dental issues.

I had to have some done this week at 19 weeks and my dentist explained to me that the radiation risk from dental x rays is the same level of radiation as if you went on a plane flight to Spain - which is deemed safe enough and that there was no risk to baby from the x rays.

I was hesitant but they are very low risk :)

Thanks both.

I’m just second guessing myself I suppose.

I’ve been a dental nurse for 10 years and I can absolutely reassure you that it will have no ill effects on baby. We won’t do routine xrays unnecessarily but a one off urgent one is justifiable. The radiation dosage is very low - as PP mentioned, you get exposed to more radiation on a short haul flight. Plus the X-ray itself is contained to your head only. Don’t worry at all!

I'm only just under 5w but I realised yesterday I had a tooth xray a few days ago (before my bfp) and I googled the same as you and found all the info about it being dangerous! Apparently it's fine and there is very minimal risk as its far up on the jaw rather than near the pelvis

Your defiantly not silly for bringing it up! I had an x ray at 7 weeks I'm now over 20 and I didn't even think they could cause harm and when I went in there was a huge sign on the door saying to let them know if your pregnant they then explained the side effects that it can cause I didn't have a choice I had to have the X-ray, broken ankle and they needed to check it healed and all gone back into the right place but honestly I was fine after the nurse did say it's more protocol to let me no but she said it would have to be more than just the one and around your belly area more as I started to then panic.
Your be fine but understand your concern x
