Hi as you can probs guess from the title Iv'e got SPD(It's quite severe and I'm on crutches)
I didn't know anything about it before I was pregnant and don't know anyone else whose had/got it aside from another first time mum at my antenatal class.
Iv'e been hoping for a water-birth but I don't know if that'll be worse for me having SPD or not,

Just wanting some advice/reasurence really...
Getting really scared about labour and frustrated with my self as crutches make doing a lot impossible

hi i have spd and had it with my first prego aswell. i didnt realize i had it then (thought it was normal) till 34 weeks and couldnt walk. i had a normal (on land, in bed) birth and spd didnt cause any problems... only when walking. after birth it was like magic within a few days it was like i never had it.
dont know if it helps.
best of luck

I wasn't on crutches but had it quite bad with both pregnancies, I delivered both on land (one hospital and one homebirth) I was really lucky my labours were fast the SPD never got in the way and like a magic pill I was pain free within a day of the baby coming out.

I really feel for you SPD is horrible and unrecognised a lot.

I have been reading a lot of things about childbirth recently and the thing that keeps cropping up is that with SPD you have to stay symmetrical as much as possible during the birth. I read that even if you end up with a c section the doctors should move your legs evenly and so I suppose this applies to whatever type of birth you are having. Maybe someone else will know something about this but I have read it in several places. I have huge sympathy for you as a close friend has spd and is really in a lot of pain.

I had spd along with other chronic back problems and my physio said to lie on my side so the pelvis isn't tilted incorrectly.

I did this and it was so much better than a previous flat on my back pregnancy.

Hi, I had SPD for practically the whole of my pregnancy and was in agong. I wanted a water birth and was told it would be fine but my waters ended up breaking at 32 weeks so they wouldn't allow it.

I did however have a perfectly normal land birth and as soon as I had given birth the SPD vanished.

Good Luck

Thanks guys
Feeling a lot better now, and glad to hear it seems to ease off/disapear after the birth :D

I asked the midwife running my antenatal class and she said that the SPD shouldn't stop me having a water birth but the initial getting in the pool will be harder.

I had spd (milder than you - no crutches) and the physio actually recommended a waterbirth because it takes the strain off the pelvis. The only potential problem I can think of is getting into and out of the pool. If you can manage that you should be fine.

Some hospitals are better than others in providing access to pools and it would be a good idea to check soon what the policy is - for some it's first-come first-served, for others you have to express an interest ages in advance.

I hope it works out for you
