IVF pregnancies - were you induced?

I am under consultant care as I am an IVF pregnancy. I was told early that I will have a scan at 36 weeks to check everything and if there appears to be any complications they will want to induce, especially at 40 weeks because the risk of still birth is higher. I am 30 weeks now so starting to think of birth plans.

I would prefer not to be induced but also understand that it could be risky to go past my due date. So if you were IVF, were you induced and at what date? How common is induction with IVF? What was your induction experience?

Following as I'm an Ivf pregnancy too! I've been told I will have a scan too and may need to be induced. 26 weeks now x

My DS was my ivf miracle and was never told I'd need inducing because I was an ivf pregnancy.

As it happened, I was induced hit that was because labour started and then stopped progressing so I had the peasant to kick start things again.

After my 8w viability scan, I was basically told I was pregnant and no different to anyone who had fallen pregnant naturally.x

Also following as I am an IVF pregnancy too - I’m under consultant care as well and they have mentioned further scans but they have not mentioned anything about being induced... I’m 21 weeks at the moment and not actually had any discussions about the actual birth yet with either the consultant or midwife so maybe that will come later. Feeling slightly terrified about the whole thing tbh!

Following too. I was hospitalised following my bfp with OHSS. I was told by the gynae doctor that I may be at risk of pre eclampsia and an earlier birth, but no mention of an induction.

I'm under consultant care but I've only had one brief phone call. No mention of either issue, & he said I might even be signed back to midwife lead care after my 20 week scan (next week).

So basically I have no idea if the IVF or OHSS is going to have any impact on birth plans!

@bunhead34 @RunnerDuck2020 @Mackie2020 interesting we have been told different things! Perhaps age has something to do with consultant care? I am also 35 x

@Sixpencefaux I've just turned 37, and my age hasn't been mentioned once either. The midwife said the OHSS was my only risk factor, and I'm down to deliver at the midwife unit so the IVF seems to have had little impact on my care, if at all really. I'm going to ask about the risk of earlier birth and induction because of IVF when I speak to the consultant after my scan next week, but if I'm honest I'm not expecting much guidance.

Mackie2020 · 10/01/2021 18:34

Also to say, I haven't been told yet that I'll be having any additional scans after 20 weeks. Is it normal to have a later scan or is it just if consultant lead or because of growth factors etc?

SantoPalo · 10/01/2021 18:38

Im 37 years old and have a mid wife led care. No mention of being induced and was told i would be treated the same as a non ivf pregnancy. However, i think that different Trusts have different protocols for ivf pregnancies.

RunnerDuck2020 · 10/01/2021 18:50

I think it does depend where you are. I am also 37 but my age has not been mentioned once, they just said they wanted to keep a closer eye on me due to the IVF. I had my 20 week scan last week and a follow up appointment with the consultant this week - I think the extra scans will depend on what they think of the 20 week scan (no issues were mentioned at the time). I was told that IVF babies tend to be on the smaller side so they like to monitor growth more closely.

I am 32 and ivf pregnancy now 20 weeks. I am consultant lead due to a couple of reasons (IVF apparently and Previous LLETZ procedure).
I have had a couple of telephone follow ups with my consultant and it was very briefly mentioned in the first that closer to the end of the pregnancy we would have a discussion about being induced if it looked like it would go past 40 weeks. She said there was a small amount of research that indicates labour in ivf pregnancies after 40 weeks have a worse outcome and that she follows the research. I didn't think to ask much else as it was a really brief think about it because we will discuss it later comment.
I didn't really pay a huge amount of attention because I feel that I have heard loads of people told the will be induced because of xy and z and by 41 weeks they are begging to be induced because they are so uncomfortable!

Thatsnotmynamename · 10/01/2021 19:03

Had my ivf baby 18 months ago at 35. Was told I was low risk when they did all their calculations for risk. Was midwife led all the way through, in fact I never entered a hospital for any appointments and had a home birth. Was told I could have regular scans and monitoring from 40 weeks but no discussion of induction. Went into labour at 39+6 though anyway.

I think it completely depends of area and their policies.

Igmum · 10/01/2021 19:04

Sounds like practice may have changed in recent years. DD14 was an IVF baby and was induced but 18 days after her due date. All absolutely fine and no one mentioned then potentially different outcomes for IVF babies

SamoyedFan123 · 10/01/2021 19:43

I think that the slight increased risk when IVF pregnancies is just down to the fact that, on average, IVF ladies tend to be older than those having natural pregnancies. There is an increased risk of placental failure after 4 weeks with increased age, so the two correlate.

SamoyedFan123 · 10/01/2021 19:43

After 40 weeks that should have said!

Purrfectlyadorable · 10/01/2021 21:28

Hi,

I had IVF and ended up with pre-eclampsia and I was induced at 37 weeks. My induction was unsuccessful and I ended up having an emergency c-section.

I was under consultant care for my full pregnancy and I had a relatively straightforward pregnancy, until the pre-eclampsia diagnosis the day before I was induced. I am glad that they took such good care of me with the extra scans as I ended up with additional complications during my labour and their care ensured my baby was born healthy, despite the problems.

It is a personal decision, but I do not regret the very medical birth I had as it ensured the safety of my child and myself.

I wish you all the best.

Pinktruffle · 11/01/2021 01:55

I had an IVF pregnancy at 37 (36 when I got pregnant). I was told that IVF was not considered any higher risk than a normal pregnancy and that my PCOS was more of a concern.

I only saw a midwife throughout my pregnancy but wanted an elective C-Section so saw a consultant towards the end.

I has been told in the run up to this that there is a higher risk if still birth with IVF and they don't usually like us to go over due to issues with placental insufficiency. I was told this was due to our dates being far more accurate than a regular pregnancy so the window to run over is much narrower for us.

My DS ended up making an early appearance at 38 weeks so all plans went out of the window in the end.
